Vinegar/peroxide to test soil??

Somewhere I read that you could use vinegar or hydrogen peroxide to test your soil's pH. I tried this with some indoor soil: nothing happened with the vinegar -- but the hydrogen peroxide bubbled a bunch -- so I guess the soil was acidic. (It was potting soil, by the way.)

Do you think this is a reasonable way to get a very crude idea of your garden soil pH?? I wonder if you could keep adding lime -- then mmix in some peroxide again to see if you had it about right. (It does seem much easier to get an actual accurate reading from the extension office, so you can get a better sense of how much lime/etc. to add.)

Thanks for your thoughts. MBAT
