buy/build a greenhouse

i am looking at putting up a greenhouse to see if i can't create a money making hobby. i am looking for a member that is looking to sell theirs, our to have someone give me some fairly easy plans for building one. livine in mn i need one that can handle the elements, and appox 12-20' x 8-10'. i will be waiting to hear from other members on ideas or what is out there for sale.

We are not allowed to post any items for sale.
If you will do a seach for hoop house plans you can find lots of plans on the internet. Also several for wooden frames and metal frames.

Contact me by email. I built a gh in 1992. It has withstood a nearby F-5 tornado and the 100 year snowstorm of March 13, 1993. You may adapt it to your own needs. It is a modified A-frame, 9 feet wide, 16 feet long, 8 feet tall at the ridge. Last year I added on to it and the new section has a 10 foot ridge. I can use single ply polycarbonate. In Minnesota you may need twin or triple ply polyc. I'll be glad to send a copy of the plans for postage.

Wow Lesli, a Live oak, I love them. I'm trying to grow a Live oak here in Pa. It is the Quartz mountain Live oak, the hardiest Live oak, probably in the world. It did good last winter, which was a mild one. Your's is likely a Texas Live oak, but, if you are in Eastern Texas you could grow the plain Live oak that is usually grown in the more humid (rainier) parts of Texas. And is usually found in the moister southern states. Either way that is a beautiful tree, and good sized, well, you did say it's 500+ years old. I hope mine can handle my winters good enough to get some size to it before I croak.

I wish I knew how to post a picture. My hoop style GH is 12 X 20, about eight feet high on the inside, with wood ends and full size doors at both ends. I have plenty of room inside, my hubby made a potting bench with storage beneath at one end, and a row of slatted tables at about 4 feet high along the east wall. So I have plenty of gardening space on the floor and on the tables. Eventually I want to run a hanger for hanging baskets on the side with the slatted tables. This GH is solid, and the shade cloth was very easy to toss over, we have it held in place by tying a small rock inside the cloth at each corner with a rope and then weighting it with a gallon jug filled with water. Including the kit for the structure with the plastic shade cloth, ground cloth and additonal supplies for the base, OSB wood ends and doors we spent less then $700 dollars. In our climate (Southwest Washington), the guy we bought our kit from says his plastic is 14 years old and he has not had to replace it. We were in his greenhouse, it is 20 X 100 and he had a great variety of plants growing in early March (a rose in bloom even - sigh) . And in spite of the record breaking wind storms that blew through our area this winter - he had no damage to his. That was enough to convince us - our goal is really to extend the growing season and be able to overwinter semi hardy plants. Not raise tropicals/orchids or so forth. But we are learning as we go - so far so good - but I am really enjoying the conversation on this forum-thanks to all of you who are willing to share your hard earned knowledge.

Vic, I'm planning something somewhat similar. Biggest difference is I will have a lean-to type with the north wall solid wood and the west wall wood with a huge window in it. Rather than thermopane glass, which I don't have, I'll use 6-mil plastic for the inside layer and 12-mil reinforced plastic on the outside. Not sure what part of the Hoosier State you are from but I'm in Cincy and we have temps as low as minus-10 and as high as 100. But the pole barn idea is what I like. I don't need a foundation which will knock out a lot of time and expense getting it started. Using 10' 4x4s in the back (set two feet deep) and 8' in the front (also buried two feet), I shouldn't have to worry about anything except a tornado blowing it over. With a door on the east and the large west window, using a large fan should allow me to keep the heat down in summer. As time passes, I also hope to replace the front plastic with energy efficient windows that I can open in summer. Mike

I want to grow garden style vegetable. Like tomatoes, spinach, lettuce, radishes, beans, onions...stuff like that. My hope is to be able to grow them year round and provide my family with fresh veggies. I have about 5 raised beds right now, but the summer is killing all my plants so a year round GH made sense. I was thinking about doing a hoop style GH but was worried about how to attach the panels to the hoops. My brother is a carpenter so using wood was the natural thing to do. We don't have much experience working with metal and thought the hoop house might be to difficult to assemble. As far as cooling goes I was going to use an evap cooler with vents and vans. My Grandfather has a GH in his back yard with the same setup (welded quonset style with corrugated fiberglass). He passed a few years back so I can't ask him for advice on how he set it up. It's used for storage now (a waste if you ask me) so I have a good idea of how he did it but any suggestions you might have would be appreciated. I'm also looking to see if anyone knows where I can buy the coverings. Is there a place in the valley? Or do I have to order online?

You might want to look into buying a greenhouse kit. All the parts come pre-cut and pre-drilled, so its just a matter of putting them together. Most dealers give you both written instructions and a video of the greenhouse being assembled. Its certainly a lot easier then designing and building your own. They come in all sizes.

I got a big one from BC Greenhouses. It wasn't easy to put together, but it was far simplier than trying to build one from the ground up.

Its about 17 feet wide, 37 feet long and has about a 12 foot peak. I had to build a wall first to put it on so I would have more height inside.

. . . and to think I thought I had the Mac Daddy GH at 8 x 16.

Small greenhouse is the curse of subdivision living. Had to keep it small enough to not be seen from the road or seen significantly at all from behind the privacy fence.

I`m in a big subdivision, too. Before I built the greenhouse, I let my fruit trees along the fence grow to about 15 feet, so my neighbor really can`t see my monster.

I suppose one could build a pit greenhouse three or four feet down into the ground and gain ceiling height that way.
