Opinions on Romantic Rose Daylily from Walmart?
Comments (4)I also will not buy from Wal*Mart unless the plant is in bloom. I rarely shop there in the first place but the only plants I have purchased there that were not in bloom were all incorrectly labeled. I bought packaged bulbs and perennials on sale and some were rotted, all lilies were cheap Asiatics instead of the Orientals and Trumpets they were labeled and only the Peony bloomed true to name. I did not end up saving any money because of how many were DOA. I have purchased a blooming Clematis there because it was one I really wanted, it was in bloom and it was cheap but I knew it was correctly labeled. I am no daylily expert, but I have bought about fifty in the past year and a lot of them were supposed to be pink as red, orange and peach don't fit in my garden (I'm seriously anal about colors) and I have found a lot labeled "pink" to really be peach or a washed out flesh tone that is yucky. I am giving them more time before getting rid of them. I have found Final Touch to be true pink....See MoreZone 5 Rose Gardeners "What's Your Favorite Rose'?
Comments (41)I live in zone 5 a little west of Madison WI and have a "Blaze Improved" that has been in for over 8 years. I live in a valley so I get lots of wind and a little cooler climate than in town, my lilacs bloom 2 weeks after the ones there. I didn't do a very good job of taking care of Blaze (didn't prune, water regularly, or fertilize up till 2 years ago). The pictures below are from today, October 3rd, and it's still cranking out the 2.25" blooms on the 5-6 foot canes. It does get BS here but I don't care, this has got to be the bloomingist rose I have. The color is a true, rich, beautiful red that does not fade (picture color is pretty accurate). Little or no fragrance to me. I don't do anything special in the winter except dump a half bag of chip bark mulch on the base for winter and sometimes if I have extra oak leaves I use those instead. There is very little die back or pruning to do come spring. From what I've read, 'Blaze' is zone 6-10, blooms on old wood, and 'Blaze Improved' is zone 5-9 blooms on new and old wood, if that helps for pruning. Very consistent and dependable. This is a repost from the Blaze topic....See MoreFavorite Romantic Book?
Comments (45)I tried the Outlander series because the time travel aspect intrigued me, but the brutality and continual peril put me off that series. I think I only made it through the first two. Same here. I didn't even make it through the first book. It seemed like she just totally forgot about her husband in her real time. I felt like I was reading two different books/authors. Rob, have you read any Nick Hornby? Juliet Naked was great. I totally loved Juliet Naked. Especially good if you are of a "certain age". The only romances that I've read in the last few years are Rules of Civility, and One Day. I believe I may have cried while reading both....See MoreWhat Roses should I order? Comments (36)So you def love Awakening! Do you have experience with New Dawn? I don't know if I'd pick Awakening again because I think there are better roses out there, and she is so very thorny. OTOH - she's healthy, doesn't black spot, and doesn't require much intervention on my part. I think I might just get a welding apron and some leather gloves though just to make pruning her easier. I don't think I'd have it on a porch if I had children, so now the pain she inflicts is more of an amusing novelty for visitors. On still another hand, she has a good fragrance (Apples) to me and since that and blackspot resistance are my two biggies she's been a good rose. As to rebloom I haven't found this rose to ever really stop and it has a good flush in the spring. I do not really keep up on deadheading, really I just rip old roses off as I walk by. If I had to pick again, I might go with a rambler in that spot and weave in a different climbing plant for later flower. An additional consideration for me was winter hardiness. I live outside of Phila in the last bit of zone 7a, and, in my opinion, we still get the occasional zone 6b winter. May of my other plants are protected by a long hedge which I've found further insulates my plants and helps maintain the temperature in the rear garden but the climbing roses climb above that protection. I'm not a woman who will go out and bury my rose canes in the ground (I have a fig tree that's on its own in the winter some years we get fruit, some years it regenerates from the base). So in additional to all I've written above I also wanted to consider a tough plant that would shrug off ice storms and the occasional freeze to 0º....See Morezeffyrose
