Need recommendation for rototiller

Hi, I am new to this forum but not gardenweb. We've always gotten great advice on appliances, home building, etc.

We have 3-4 acres that was cleared when we built our house. What's left is a total mess, rocks and branches everywhere. We are having it harley raked to clean it up and want to plant an alternate of buckwheat/winter rye as a cover drop to start to generate some soil over time so that we can one day....have a big lawn...

I need a recommendation for a sturdy, workhorse rototiller. We have a modest budget- 2k- and it will be used several times a year after we cut the buckwheat and winter rye to till it all back into the soil. I know they are all small in that price range so it will take us a while to till 3 acres but any advice would be appreciated. Troy bilt?

I have three acres and would never dream of working all of it with a walk-behind. You should know that Troy Built is defunct and the name is now owned by some big box store supplier like MTD. Modern landscape prep contractors would be the way I would go.

Your $2000 budget is rather limiting, particularly for the amount of land you have. Still, there are both rear-tined tillers, mid-tined tillers, and front-tined tillers in that price range. You mentioned rocks. Are there a lot of rocks mixed in with your soil? High tine speeds and encounters with a rock can lead to bad things, like damage to your tiller and/or yourself. You might want to look at the used market, like eBay or Craig's List.

I use a mid-tined Merry Tiller myself, and like it a lot, because of all the accessories that are available for it, its low, controllable tine speed, highly visible tilling zone, and its deep-digging ability. Countless times I have rescued a toad or tiny snake from in front of the tines that would have been converted to mincemeat by a rear-tined tiller. And its low tine speed merely "stirs" the soil, leaving the all-important crumb structure intact, without pureeing it like a rear tined tiller does. Most earthworms survive my tilling, while a rear-tined tiller cuts them into many pieces.

I have the "top of the line" International model, with a 3-stage reduction transmission for very high tine torque, controllable low tine speed that doesn't need a dirt shield, and dual V-belts for high capacity clutch action. I have "rolled out" rocks bigger than footballs with it. It also tills 12 inches deep (or more, if you don't mind going slower), while most rear tined tillers are hard put to till 6 inches deep.

If I had acres to work, I would want a riding tractor with a rototiller attachment, provided that the ground didn't roll enough to make it dangerous for the tractor to turn over. The advantage of a walk-behind is that you can operate on very sloping ground. Of course, some people would say that you shouldn't till ground that slopes a lot, to avoid erosion from rain.

Grassman - Some follow-up on my previous post. Great idea to get the soil test. So many people neglect to do that. Amend your soil PH as necessary. I discouraged you to rototill 2 or 3 inches of compost into your soil for several reasons. 1. Compost continues to decompose, it essentially disappears. That could leave you with a rough and bumpy lawn. 2. Tilling brings up tons of weed seeds that you donÂt want. 3. You are talking about a tremendous amount of physical work here. Not only is it possible to overdress every year, but it is the best thing you can do for your lawn and gardens. Sprinkle compost on any problem areas you have several times a year if you can. Go ahead and use starter fertilizer and a good pre-emergent herbicide in the spring. If you do decide to go organic next year, then soil PH, and NPK will take care of themselves without any amendment necessary, thus reducing the need or relevance of further soil testing. One other thing you should know, top dressing is optional when you plant grass seed. ItÂs highly recommended, but you can have excellent results without topdressing. Just keep it moist.

Hi kgrant, I understand why you want to till. But generally that isn't recommended because the soil will tend to settle in such a way that you will have a bumpy lawn next year. Also, I think you just spread the moss that way. The alternative is to kill the existing foliage with Round-Up (glyphosate). That works much better and is not nearly as toxic as you may imagine. But you will need to plan for two applications of the stuff, spaced about a week apart, with the idea that you can seed on the day after your last application. Is the lawn really 75% moss? IMHO that points either to a drainage problem or too much shade for grass to grow. pH is a factor too of course, but at 75% moss coverage I would guess that one or both of those other two factors is the real problem. And since you also have crabgrass, I would guess that the biggest problem is drainage rather than sunlight (crabgrass does not grow in shade, and needs moisture to germinate). Do you think that your soil might be heavy clay? I'm sorry for all of the questions, but the answers could be very helpful in working out a plan. That said, as to what to do if you want to try to get grass growing there, without knowing more about your situation I would start RIGHT NOW by laying down a moss control product to kill the moss (I believe Iron is the mineral that does that job). I only mention that because moss is very "spreadable" by all of the techniques used to establish new lawns, so you want to kill off as much of that, as soon as possible, before even having a final plan for planting the new lawn. So my advice would be to get some moss killer (Iron) down immediately, tell us more about your specific conditions extent of shade (more specifically how many hours of direct sunlight in the weakest spots), rough idea of the composition of your soil (clay? sand? perfect?) and plan to do whatever else is necessary in time for seeding on August 15. Depending on how the weather works out, that may be a little early, but consider Labor Day weekend to be your"Drop Dead Date" for seeding. If we get a long fall this year you may actually have another week or two, but in MA I would not count on that. I'm sorry for the rambling message, but we are approaching the absolute best time of year for seeding (end of summer) in your area (unless you are in the mountains, where it comes sooner), and you will want to get all of your prep work done in time for that. Sorry to drag up an old topic, but it was interesting and it's a slow afternoon here... In 1998, I bought 5 acres of former horse pasture. Very hard red clay compacted by horses. I bought an old Ford tractor with a mower attached to keep the grass in check. Bought a 5.75HP rear tine tiller to put in a garden. Spent two hours in March or April going back and forth trying to break through a 20 foot stretch. I scratched the grass off, but not much else. So I went looking for a PTO tiller for the tractor. Tractor Supply had a used one, 5 feet wide, $200. It worked well, but I still needed something to really break the ground. Bought a subsoiler. Beautiful. Subsoiled, tilled, planted. Since then, I've got a bigger tractor with low range so I could till better. Beautiful. New place, new beds, tilled 6 inches deep, big rain came. Washed out a gully 4 feet wide, and 6 inches deep. At the bottom was a pattern where I could see the marks the tiller made. Hard pan. Very disappointing, but I understood what all the fuss was about at that moment. I have basically 100x100 beds, and I have a 4x5 disc plow that I can use if I want to. But I find that it rides on top more than it digs down, so it sits. I also have a turn plow that I use for making raised rows to plant sweetpotatoes on, but I also use it to dig deeper than the tiller will. I bought a spring tip scarifier years ago that's nearly useless to me. I saw on one of those AgPhD shows where they took a back hoe and dug along a row of corn just to illustrate how deep corn roots go. 10 feet deep on some of them. So corn gets way on down there. One other point. I use an EarthWay planter to walk the rows and drop seed that makes sense to do that with. So I kind of have to have nice soil to do that in. Doesn't work so well with no-till or disc/plow scenario. I could see doing some no-till where I'd be dropping transplants like tomatoes or peppers or spot planting seeds 2 or 3 feet apart like with squash or okra. But not elsewhere. Bottom line is that I till most of the time, but I will use a subsoiler or a turn plow once in a while before tilling to help break up the hard pan and to bring up more clay to combine with the top layer. I haul in copious amounts of horse manure all the time and incorporate it in the off season. And I collect several hundred bags of leaves in the fall most years. Kind of wet and colder earlier this year, so I haven't been out. So I'm constantly adding and replacing organic matter or looking for ways to do that. I've read about salts building up from too much manure, but my soil tests are always outstanding. Next year, I should have a vacuum mounted on the back of a 19 foot box trailer that will allow me to collect more leaves than I've ever collected before. And I'm working on connecting a 2 horse trailer to a JD 870 with a belly mower so I can collect "grass" from the field to use as mulch and compost material. Where to begin (weeding? grading? rototilling?)

Many people make a really big thing about spraying poisons to kill "weeds" before tilling and then people find that seeds germinate and grow even after spraying. Tilling, without spraying, will put that unwanted plant growth, the "weeds", into the soil as organic matter, something that soil may well need. I would start with a good reliable soil test for soil pH and major nutrient levels and even use these simple soil tests, Soil test for organic matter. From that soil sample put enough of the rest to make a 4 inch level in a clear 1 quart jar, with a tight fitting lid. Fill that jar with water and replace the lid, tightly. Shake the jar vigorously and then let it stand for 24 hours. Your soil will settle out according to soil particle size and weight. For example, a good loam will have about 1-3/4 inch (about 45%) of sand on the bottom. about 1 inch (about 25%) of silt next, about 1 inch (25%) of clay above that, and about 1/4 inch (about 5%) of organic matter on the top. 2) Drainage. Dig a hole 1 foot square and 1 foot deep and fill that with water. After that water drains away refill the hole with more water and time how long it takes that to drain away. Anything less than 2 hours and your soil drainsÃ¢ÂÂ too quickly and needs more organic matter to slow that drainage down. Anything over 6 hours and the soil drains too slowly and needs lots of organic matter to speed it up. 3) Tilth. Take a handful of your slightly damp soil and squeeze it tightly. When the pressure is released the soil should hold together in that clump, but when poked with a finger that clump should fall apart. 4) Smell. What does your soil smell like? A pleasant, rich earthy odor? Putrid, offensive, repugnant odor? The more organic matter in your soil the more active the soil bacteria will be and the nicer your soil will smell. 5) Life. How many earthworms per shovel full were there? 5 or more indicates a pretty healthy soil. Fewer than 5, according to the Natural Resources Conservation Service, indicates a soil that is not healthy. to learn more about the soil I had and plan on what needs be done to make that soil into a good healthy soil. Then I would till that soil, including any "weeds", and grade it, install any irrigation and other hardscape and then seed or sod the lawn. You could spray and in a couple of weeks lay some sod and have an instant lawn and then spend a lot of time, energy, and money on upkeep.

Thanks for the feedback- we are combining budgets (for our mower and tiller) and buying a JD x540 mower which has a hydraulic rototiller attachment as an add-on. A used version of this attachment is less than 2k and is 42" across, much better than 20"!

You are right- 2k for a stand alone tiller wouldn't get us very far!

Any preference for rear tine, mid tine or front tine when operating in very rocky soil such as we have in coastal Maine?

as a side note when u say rye i take it ti mean annual rye. try cerial rye groos roots faster and creats huge amounts of biomass. grows in cool weather. will grow 4 feet tall in orest of soils. each plant will grow several inches of roots per day.

I gardened in Maine for several years, and I used my mid-tined Merry Tiller because that is what I had. Rocks are difficult for any tiller, but they are particularly bad for rear tined tillers because they have a high tine speed (in the neighborhood of 200 rpm) which reacts badly with rocks. My Merry Tiller had a triple reduction transmission system that produced a relatively slow tine speed and high torque that made encounters with rocks more manageable. Its twin V-belt clutch made it feasible to just roll out some pretty big rocks onto the surface using just the slasher tines and fingertip control of the clutch.

I purchased the optional Merry Tiller Pick Tine rotors to deal with extremely rocky conditions. The pick tines till a narrow 16-inch swath, so the going is necessarily slow with them. They can actually till a blacktop hard surface road, although I can't think of a practical situation when you would want to do that.

You might want to consider hiring someone to till your rocky soil with heavy equipment. Rocks are hard on equipment.

Tilling rocky soil takes patience. I made a rock retaining wall with the rocks that I tilled up over the years. It was weird. Every year I tilled up new rocks. I really wondered where they were coming from.
