Kaiserin Auguste Vicktoria climbing rose

I had this rose in a poor spot for about a year and it did not do anything. Once I moved it into a better spot, it took off like crazy! Now, a year or so later, it is blooming. I'm so thrilled as I love the older HTs. It smells wonderful. Great rose!

This picture does not do it justice at all, but here it is. Anyone else grow this rose? It's really a treasure.

We just planted KAV in the Sacramento cemetery last fall, and we've been astounded by its constant bloom. I'll go take a close look at it later this week, and see if I can get a good photo to post. It's one of the few grafted roses in our collection. Sequoia Nursery was budding older HTs as tree roses for the restored rose garden at Hearst Castle. Burling, a true master of budding, had also budded some of them as shrubs, and offered KAV, Gray Pearl and Showgirl to the cemetery, which we took with gratitude. Sequoia usually buds onto Pink Clouds, so I have no idea how this rose will grow on Fortuneana or other rootstock, or own root. As a budded, young plant, it's an absolute winner. We don't fertilize much, or prune hard, so often our bloom size is smaller than people get in more normal garden conditions. But all season long, it's been covered with bloom. Just lovely. Anita

You already have my current favorite in EVH, I LOVE that rose! But I must tell you he ate my Secret Garden Musk and SGM had a couple of years head start. I'm just a few miles south of you, so our climates should be similar. SGM did quite well with BS in my no spray garden, but never really took off the way I expected. After EVH began growing wildly, SGM just faded away and recently I found it had finally died. Perhaps it was the clone I had since everyone else seems to rave about it. Of the 3, K.A.V. has the least disease resistance where I live near San Francisco, Ca but it still is rarely affected by anything but a bit of blackspot. It is very pretty. I don't adore the scent but then no one has to smell a rose. Mme. Jules Bouche, has bare lower limbs, and needs regular fertilizing for the blooms to be large and shapely otherwise my plant produces a large number of small and somewhat shapeless blooms. Very nice fragrance. I've found it roots easily from cuttings. At its' best it is sublime. One of the great white roses, F.K.D. cannot hold a flame to it. (Oh dear, that abbreviation appears a bit vulgar) Mrs. Herbert Stevens. I'm very fond of this rose, the climbing form can be grown as a large self -standing shrub of c. 8 ' by 8' and it blooms here nearly as often as the Tea roses, starting just after M.A.C. begins in February or March, and blooms frequently through mid-December. I like its' type of fragrance best of all the 3. A little p.m. occasionally but nothing that I can't ignore. I'd choose Mrs. Herbert Stevens of all the 3, but I'd miss Mm.e Jules Bouche if I didn't have her. K.A.V. is too strongly an H.T. for my Tea rose longings, I don't know what I was thinking when I ordered it , swept away by reports of it being very fragrant, when I don't like its type of scent which reminds me of the type of scent that very old perfume leaves in the bottom of a old purse of a very old lady. Yes, Marlorena, I recall reading somewhere that NRS recommendations were particularly welcomed by gardeners in the PNW, since the climates are supposedly so similar. Curdle, sometime you should read old rose descriptions from Samuel McGredy. EVERY of his roses lavished with praise, each one the very best rose ever raised... he got away with it, because it seemed that he really was enamored of these roses, and felt the praise was truly justified. KAV is a truly lovely rose (in both its forms) honoring a very officious lady. Auguste Viktoria herself, devoted wife of Kaiser Willy of WWI infamy, would have been deeply offended by Kitty's downgrading of the form of address to which she was entitled -- not merely Her Majesty, Kitty, but Her Imperial and Royal Majesty (and don't you forget it!). She was the last Empress (Kaiserin) of Germany and Queen of Prussia.

With her husband's complicity, the shallow and petty Auguste Viktoria devised abominable ways to make life as miserable as she possibly could for her mother-in-law. The latter was a very progressive, highly intelligent woman for whom two fine roses are named -- a Bourbon, 'Kronprinzessin Victoria', and a Tea, 'Kaiserin Friedrich'.

But who cares, right? -- I should probably apologize for foisting historical minutiae/ rose trivia on everyone. I'm not sure when, but at some point I became almost obsessively curious about all the "people" in my garden. It's a fascination that has led to crannies of history that, without a rose garden, I wouldn't ever have explored.

Is Royal William named for her husband, the Kaiser? I have that rose and like it very much. I will be sure to address my rose properly henceforth.

I have Cl KAV. It took forever to get going, but was worth the wait. I agree it is a treasure. I read it was extremely popular prior to WWI but was abandoned in the US with the unpopularity of Germany due to WWI.

According to HMF (references) 'Royal William' is...
"named to mark King William III's coming to England in 1688"

Some webpages tell of a woman who was snubbed and made to feel that she would never be good enough to join the family. Perhaps this shaped her relations with her mother and sister in law in later years. At least she had a happy marriage.

Marie Antoinette has been badly treated by historians for a long time now. She never did or said many of the hateful things that were written about her.

what is the fragrance like? damask like, or mixed floral? or?
disease resistance? I don't spray.
do the flowers last long in a vase?
