SHADE CLOTH - COOLS AND SHADES

Due to superior reflectability and lightweight of AluminetÂ®, it is the perfect cloth to cover the outside of a greenhouse instead of standard black shade cloth, it does not absorb the heat. Its dual functionality both shades and cools the greenhouse. Much lighter in weight than standard shade cloth, AluminetÂ® is easy and quick to install.

DESCRIPTION

ALUMINETÂ® is a special knitted shade cloth made from metalized HDPE. The fibers are produced from mono-oriented HDPE, giving the fiber durability and longevity. After an aluminum metalization process, the films are covered with a special anti-oxidation coating. The shade clotht is knitted into a precise uniform texture. The shade cloth meets the ASTN-D-3887 standard.

what they are selling aluminet (is this the typical size people have been able to buy from other sources, is the pricing in the ballpark of other vendors etc.

I asked a question to this site contact (I told them I had a 10x12 greenhouse and I'd like to know how much of the aluminet I would need for it...this is the response I got back. I guess without knowing if this site is legit, and not having any experience using or buying this kind of material, I just am asking questions to make sure what they are proposing and what they are selling in is line with what others have...If it's too good to be true, kinda thing...anyway this is the response I got.

"It depends on how the greenhouse is oriented in relation to the sun, whether yu have plants growing at ground level, plants growing on benches, etc. Once you decide on a size I would be happy to provide pricing. Feel free to contact me anytime if you have any questions."

Howdy rjinga, this might be one of the threads you're remembering. Greenhouse shadecloth I have a post in that thread with a link to a website that caused me to be confused on the same question. The website does mention Aluminet being used to hold in heat, but cuestaroble was kind enough to explain that the website was likely referring to the practice of installing the Aluminet on the inside of the greenhouses like a big ceiling drape or curtain -- as some large commercial greenhouses do. Some big greenhouses have systems that allow the "solar curtain" (that Stressbaby mentioned) to be pulled open during the day, so light can enter and warm things up, and then pulled closed at night, so the Aluminet can reflect the heat back down into the structure. Of course, this kind of application doesn't apply to our little HFGH hobby greenhouses, where most of us go through a lot of effort just to attach it to the outside in a sturdy way. I think this is one of those confusing issues that varies a lot depending on where we are, how intense our sun is, and what kind of plants we grow in the GH during the winter. Last winter, I had my 40% Aluminet on the inside of my greenhouse (trying to avoid wind problems) and the light level was just right for my plants. However, we have intense sun here, even in winter, and I'll bet in other climates it would block too much light. Right now I have 50% Aluminet on the outside of my GH roof, trying to better protect my HFGH panels from UV deterioration problems. During the hottest part of our summer, I also had 40% Aluminet draped on the inside of the roof as well. (As you can tell I am still experimenting and learning.) Now that the sun is less horrific, I have the interior 40% layer down, and I'm still deciding if the remaining 50% outside layer will block too much light for me during winter. I think it might, but I'm not sure yet. I'm not looking forward to messing with my shadecloth either...but I'll probably be out there on a ladder saying bad words and making adjustments. I haven't found an easy answer to this one yet...the sun intensity changes so much here from summer to winter that I am pretty sure I can't escape making shadecloth changes to accomodate the seasons (unfortunately.) I'm hoping after I get another year or two under my belt I'll have some kind of a system figured out.

Any scheme for English spelling immediately brings to mind the question, "whose English are we going to follow for pronunciation?" (I always try to find a way to put an "o" in "pronunciation," why is that? ;o) It seems rather arrogant to discriminate against dialects from different parts of the US. I mean, even simple, everyday words like "talk" and "bought" or the distinction between "pin" and "pen," are different in different parts of one nation. And, isn't it wonderful that we can each read mostly what is written in British English, Australian English, South African English, Indian English - whether we have difficulties with the spoken dialects, or not? Then there is difference between 18th century English and 21st century English (or, 22nd century English for that matter). Are we really willing to leave that reading comprehension behind? My Canadian grandfather apparently insisted that my mother pronounce some words, a certain way. She was never able to convince me that there was a difference between "pin" and "pen," for example. I'd already lost a good deal of hearing even as a child so I was pretty much a lost cause, I am sure. I thought I might get a question about how I was once kicked off of GardenWeb . . . and got back on!! Well, it fairly early in my days here and I was just getting cot-caught-cat up . . . in my current Asian veggie fervor. There was a seed company's offerings, which were available here locally. Then I found it on-line and wanted to share. The name of the seed company starts with a "New" and ends with a "Dimension" . . . see, I still have some trepidation! Anyway, after trying to post a link a couple of times -- I was off to Disney World! Every time I tried to log on to GW, I ended up in Disney World! This was about the time that my birthday rolled around and GW was still sending out email birthday wishes. I responded with a "Thank You" and a "does this mean that I can use GW again?" It is impossible for a standard electric cooktop to boil the same amount of water in the same magnetic pan faster then a 3,600 watt induction cooktop. It is a simple matter of BTU's and the far larger amount of BTU's in a 3,600 watt induction cooktop overcomes any amount of BTU's in any residential electric or gas cooktop, be they Viking, Wolf, Thermador, etc. For gas to cook faster then induction one would need a restaurant grade (as in a Chinese restaurant) gas burner. I don't know of any electric cooktop (professional or residential) that comes anywhere near this. The highest I have ever seen is 2,500 watts. Cooking Type Efficiency Induction >90% Electric Coil 65% Electric(w/ ceramic top) 47% Gas ` 1,000 watts = 3,413 BTU's electric 2,500 watt = 8,532.5 BTU's - 65% = 5,546 BTU's gas 15,000 BTU's = 15,000 BTU's - 40% = 6,000 BTU's gas 18,000 BTU's = 18,000 BTU's - 40% = 7,200 BTU's induction 3,600 watts = 12,286.8 BTU's - 90% = 11,058 BTU's Since BTU's and the & of heat transferred are the basic parameters of heating speed, it is obvious which method can boil faster. As an aside, with Diva releasing a $9,000 induction range with a 4,000 watt center burner you can get almost 12,300 BTU's in actual output. New Flooring Project - Costs seem right?

We used these guys at our prior house a couple of years ago, but for a much smaller job, and the flooring was pre-finished. Had no problems with their work. They have done work on several friends floors as well, but I think they all also went with pre-finish. The workers a fairly young Argentinians that have been doing flooring for years. They work like machines when they prep and start the install - it's actually fun to watch. When I check prices online it is hard to compare because there may be hidden fees.

Found some online, 12 x 12 piece with edges and grommets every 2 feet. 50% for $70 (total) does this seem like a good price? everyone online has some add on fee for a small (what they consider small) order.

That pretty much applies to any shade material for the greenhouse.
Are you planning on covering just the roof? (or partial roof) or are you planning on covering parts of the wall as well?

I do use aluminet for my greenhouse and here are my opinions regarding their claims:

Energy Saving:
Any method of shading the growing area will provide energy savings, in the form of less electricity and water to keep the growing area cool.
The question is whether their product provides better energy savings compared to other products. I do not have enough data to claim that their product is better than the rest with that regard. But from personal experience in my own grow area setup, the aluminet provided better heat reduction compared to previous products I have used.

High Reflectability
In terms of light, no one can doubt this. Just try looking at a structure covered by aluminet during the day.
In terms of heat, I would think that reflected light leads to less heat absorption by the fabric. But that is just conjecture on my part.

U.V. Stabilized
Without any specific tools to confirm this, I will have to take their word on this and let the manufacturer deal with any improper advertisement claims if it ends up being false.

High Tensile Strength
It does stretch a good bit. But I have not had the need to put it under any such strain that would break any shade material anyway.

Lightweight, easy to handle
Compared to plastic/cloth based shade material, I can say that this material is lighter.

Protects against frost
This is irrelevant for my growing area.
My growing area is inside a greenhouse covered by aluminet. So the greenhouse is providing the frost protection.

Improved light diffusion
The twisted ribbon patterns of the shade material causes the light to diffuse into different directions. Some go into the greenhouse, some are directed outwards.

Easily Fastened
If you bought it with the edger/lining and fastening eyes, then yes it is easy to install.

I pulled up my invoice from my original purchase:

Calculating the relative cost(including shipping):
21 x 16 = 336 square feet
Total cost: $170.25
So it ends up around $0.50 per square foot.

In your case, (assuming you have the same liners and grommet options)
12 x 12 = 144 square feet
Total cost: $70.00
So it ends up around $0.49 per square feet.

Wow. I think I overpaid! lol.
