I forgot to mention one thing that the guy said. He said that in the south, Jude the Obscure is a climber and will grow over 8 feet tall! I have a Jude and mine just got about 3 feet tall last year. It bloomed like crazy so it appeared very happy. Has anyone else experienced it growing that tall?

I have Jude as well, I was actually wondering how big he's going to get in Dallas. Do you have yours planted in full sun? I was planning on planting him on the east side of the house where it can get only morning sun till 2 pm.

Thank you for this post. I tape her shows, then delete them if they do not look interesting. This time of year I work outside so much that I delete quite a bit. I will be sure to watch it.

I have two Jude the Obscures. The older one gets about 6' tall - I'm going to train him on a pillar this year. I cut him back pretty far each spring, as we're in zone 5 and we get winter damage above the snowline, but he just springs right back. The newer Jude hasn't gotten as big, but he is also in a more exposed area and gets a little more winter kill. It is such a beautiful, amazingly fragrant rose. The only problem I've heard is from folks who live in very humid rainy areas - they say he tends to ball for them.

My Jude gets about 4-5 hours of sun here in Dallas. I just planted him last year and he did great except after the last flush of flowers the plant just stopped growing. It didn't look bad, it just didn't put our anymore new growth at all. My other roses were still going strong and they are all in the same bed. I thought maybe it died. I pruned it back pretty far in March and now it is totally leafed out with about 25 buds on him. I don't know what happened last year, but maybe that is why he didn't get any taller than 3'.

aaarrrgh! I want Jude the Obscure so bad I can TASTE it!

My Jude is 7 feet tall. I never pruned it that hard. I don't remember how long I've had him but he's 5-6.
I picked up Martha's mag. last month and there is a rose in there that is an Austin that I had never seen or heard of before.
