Any hope for my sad frozen rugosas?

Hello all,

My husband and I planted some rugosas on Sunday. We were exhausted by the time the sun set and weren't able to cover them in the feeble light of the street lamp.

They already had buds when we planted that looked greenish white and plump, but yesterday morning we woke up to this -- yellowish buds which feel somewhat limp.

Is this transplant shock, or have they frozen to death? Is there anything I can do to revive them?

Much more likely that they are having water issues than temperature issues. You don't cover newly planted bareroots to keep them warm, you cover them to keep them moist. If your weather has been anything like ours, this is going to be a major issue. Dry and sunny weather is difficult for bareroots.

I hosed them down on Sunday and last night. Will increase watering time and hope they bounce back. Drip irrigation is going in this weekend, so hopefully that will make a difference.

They're mulched with a 1/2" layer of composted manure under those cocoa shells, so I had hoped they weren't drying out too badly, but our weather is indeed similar to yours, with sunny 65-70 degree days, and 35-40 degree nights.

They are not exactly the nicest trees, but I've seen uglier. I would probably not bother doing anything to them. They kind of stop your eye from going immediately to the street and I think the yard would look smaller without them. I would also add some shrubs near them to seperate you from the driveway..... also prune out that big snag from your sidewalk tree (silver maple?) and consider getting rid of the ivy? groundcover that covers the yard.... it looks like it has paths worn into it. In other words there's not much you can do for the hemlocks, I would focus my energies elsewhere.

This depends on how frozen the plant was. My sister-in-law did this a couple of years ago. You need to hope that only the branches are frozen, but not the core stem. What happened to her is that all the branches fell off, but after a few weeks new shoots started growing back from the stump. I don't think there's really much you can do - just remove any squishy parts, and hope that it regenerates.

Thanks Josh and Mike for the encouragement! I guess that is really what I was looking for, someone to tell me it might be ok! LOL! I never had such a tragedy in my whole citrus 'career'. I do think I will lose 2 small young citrus I have, a key lime, which I know will be easy to replace, and a variegated Tiger Navel, which will not be as easy to replace. I got one from Logees a year and a half ago, and do not know if they even sell it anymore. I am just hoping the trees that I have that are 3 years or more will be ok. It just hurts to know I had nice plants from Four Winds get really root damaged in a matter of 2 months. As you know, they are not cheap. Good. News today I had an electrician come over and give me an estimate for a 2 circuit outdoor outlet for the greenhouse! So I can have enough electricity for 2 heaters when it gets below 15F, which is not much. But I will be atleast able to use some heat mats at the same time as the heater. So even if the air gets down to 40F, I can still have the soil above 50F at the least. Anyone ever make a bottom heater out of rope lights and sand instead of buying expensive heat mats? I have 3 separate heat mats but would like something that I can get in a section. My Solexx greenhouse is 8X16 long, and would like to get one half side of one side of the greenhouse of 4X8' to make a heated bottom for citrus only. The figs I have that take up a lot of space do not need such heat. So I am trying to figure out the best way to get my citrus to get warm roots this winter due to the recent damage, otherwise, Previous years have been just fine. Tanks! Christy

I will check that out. Thanks. This weekend will get colder yet, into the middle and low 30s. I will cover the zukes, melons, carrots, and lettuce and hope for the best. I was thinning some of the carrots, and some have barely gotten to the point of thin orange taproots. The melons have started to bud out. I have at least one zuke forming. I have no idea whether it was fertilized or not. If so, I might only be a week away from having a zucchini boat. I've heard that lettuce and spinach can withstand frost, but I don't see how that can be. They're so fragile. I've given up on the maters. Sigh. Brassica might be able to withstand this frost, though. If I can get some of my plants through this next battle with the Frost King and keep them going for another couple of weeks, I might actually be able to get some produce out of them. If the potatoes flop over, I won't be too concerned. The plants grew big for the most part, and it's about time to harvest potatoes, isn't it? I'm writing all of this down to help with my timing for next year. And I figure that if I spray Spinosad or Pyola every three days or so when the flea beetles are swarming, I might be able to give my first run of seedlings a chance.

If the soil is moist, that is all you can do. The problem is that the root systems aren't advanced enough to pull enough water from the soil to keep the expanding leaves hydrated. So the usual thing is to bury the canes so they don't lose water. Either that or plant them earlier, so they can establish in cool, damp weather.

Don't be surprised if you end up losing the current growth. The canes look quite long for bareroots, and there will be more growth buds further down.

Those white growth buds that late-planted bareroots usually come with will almost never survive. I would pick them off. In itself, losing them is not a problem. Since it is late in the bareroot planting season and temperatures will be rising, I would spray the canes with Wilt Pruf or other anti-transpirant to reduce moisture loss. If they don't dehydrate, they will be fine.

Pickering Nursery suggests that you trim "white shoots" to 1/4".

It will bounce back just give it some time. As long as the canes themselves look green and healthy they should put out new shoots. If the canes start to look dry or shriveled that's bad. It's not a matter of keeping the roots moist, that's easy with proper watering, it's keeping the canes from drying out. You might want to mound some soil up the canes until you start to see new growth on them. Then gently wash away the extra soil.

Well it seems the edit doesn't work for me so I'll add this.

In zone 5 it is not late for bare root planting at all. I've only just started planting my bare roots here in zone 6. It's been far too cold and the soil too wet to do any planting earlier. The nurseries only start to get the bare roots in in late April here and May is our best planting month.

Thanks everyone for your advice. One more question: Would you recommend I cut the canes back further, trim the buds back, or do nothing (except continuing to water) and wait for new signs of life?

Can you tell I'm more of a vegetable gardener, and this is my first go-round with roses? :)
