Why are you gathering supplies in order to join a rose society? Join the rose society and let them work with you on what you need. I have no idea where you live but most rose societies are the same price and though it is too late in my area to plant bare roots, you need to call your local rose society and ask for their consulting rosarian and ask if it is too late to plant bareroots and what is the best time. You can plant potted plants anytime the ground is not frozen. Why do you need chemical fertilizers if you have not purchased roses. You don't put chemical fertilizers on roses until they are about a year old. Congratulations if Mr. Lincoln and Peace do well in your area. Those are beautiful roses, that for many of us, need special TLC and I hope you find a Peace rose that is not virused. So arm yourself with information from your rose society by contacting their consulting rosarian. Rose society dues are not very expensive. What's with this "affordable" rose society.

Rose lists on extension service bulletins are not reliable. They are often just gathered from old books. Ask rose growers here or locally. Set priorities for your selection. For example if you prioritize disease resistance, it greatly limits the output. If you want plants that don't freeze to the ground, that's another strong limiter. Most hybrid teas need spraying and are not cane hardy in z. 5.

They are fine anytime, you just need to protect them from dehydration while they get established. Mound up some soil over the plant if it is a bareroot for a couple of weeks. It is not a big deal. The longer they have to set up their roots to make them storng for winter the better but I have not had much issues with this.

In zone 5 you should still be good planting bareroots up until the end of May. Mid- to late April is better, first of May is better too.

Peace and Mr. Lincoln are hybrid teas and in my zone 5 don't do that well. I sometimes am able to keep Mr. Lincoln alive through a winter but have lost him previously. I grow many other non-HT roses that return year after year. Depending on what you like, you could look into old garden roses, rugosas, David Austins, and many more that will be hardier in zone 5.

FYI, tree roses are unlikely to survive if kept outdoors in the winter in zone 5. I have one that needs to be brought down into the cellar every fall or else the graft would freeze.

I live in Illinois, I have a Mr Lincoln. I've had it for 15 years. It gets nipped once in a while, but it's still doing great. One thing when you plant them, bury the bud union 6"deep. That way they won't freeze out on you if you don't cover them.
Go to ars.org, then look for Consulting Rosarians. Then look at your state and city. Then contact that person, and he or she will be glad to help you with everything you'll need to know.

Both Mr. Lincoln and Peace are common enough that you can probably buy them more-or-less locally already potted up, so you don't have to worry about the bareroot question. You can plant them anytime that way, but the earlier the better so they become established before winter. Your local rose society would know the best places locally to buy roses. Also, post what city&state you are in and maybe there is someone on this forum close enough to help out.

Don't think of them as fragile flowers.

Think of them as shrubs, with different ones having differing amounts of hardiness and differing abilities to tolerate the other details of your particular climate. I'm a big believer in right plant, right place. If you plant a shrub hardy enough to survive your winter and with an innate ability to thrive in your climate you are giving yourself a big head start. It's not unusual in zone 5 to find that the number of roses resembling Mr. Lincoln and Peace is sometimes limited (depending on details of your climate and particular garden, the Midwestern zone 5 is different from the Mountain West zone 5 and both of those are very different from the New England zone 5), but as you gain experience you may come to love the "antique" roses or even the species roses. Many of those will grow very well in zone 5 (although fewer of them will bloom throughout the summer, instead putting on a huge burst of bloom in May, June, or early July).

Sometimes as a compensation those older roses, particularly the species roses, will give you autumn and early winter color via colored leaves and/or colored fruit (hips) to enjoy in October, November, and December.

(It's like the rest of life. There is a good side and a bad side to everything!)

Get them now and plant them in big pots. That way you can plant them anytime you want. When time comes to transplant to a permanent home, e-mail me for tips on planting a potted roses without disturbing the roots.
One tip now, potted roses need to be watered often.

Actually, not too many people know this, at least from what I constantly read on the Forum, but you can plant roses anytime of the year that the ground is not frozen. They may not bloom as soon as you would like, because the sequence is off, but plant them - yes, you can. One of my friends a number of years ago was closing out his mother's rose garden, and told me I could take as many as I wanted, but would have to get them myself. I did, and although it was in the middle of July, I planted them just the same. As long as you water them well before you dig them out, keep them damp in transport, be sure the new hole is well hydrated, and then water well after planting and in the following week, they will do just fine. There will be some wilting due to their systems wanting to conserve water, but once in their new homes and acclimated, will do just fine. So, I guess, in reality there is no date set in stone that you have to have them planted by. Follow the few simple rules as given about watering, and you should be fine.

I just try to email once every 2 weeks so I don't get too obnoxious LOL! I'm not using the organic supplies until the appropriate time...I just like to try to catch the sales to save money... In April I'm totally broke but will have a bit more money in May, that is why I've had to delay and have to go to my County Rose Society until next year when I can join the official ARS Society...Also my Dog Agility with my Border Collie already costs me over a thousand dollars per year...I am hoping that my County Rose Society and this forum will help me at least get started... Peace and Mr. Lincoln were recommended by the Overland Park Rose Society (my "county" rose society) and I loved how they look and fragrance to me is very important as well... Also I have childhood memories of a very beautiful rose bush that had gigantic blooms on it that looked identical to Peace (sunset yellow with pink blush) when I was a kid growing up in Queens, NYC in the tiny duplex that we lived at... I am hoping since Dan_Keil and Illinois has similar climate to Kansas (just a bit more colder and windier) that I'll be o.k with Mr. Lincoln and Peace? In the meantime like you all suggested I will make sure I talk to the local rosarians for any other possibilities for hybrid teas that I may have missed on...

Katsrose and Liane, thanks very much about the thoughts on trying to plant a little earlier so that my roses can establish stronger roots for the winter... I will also be sure to use the insulation mulch barriers as well when the cold weather hits (saw pictures online on how to insulate them) Karl, I will email as soon as I can...

Keeping everything I've learned over the years to myself would be a terrible waste. Knowledge and experience should be shared so mistakes are not continously repeated.
I find growing roses to be fun and easy, especially now that making most all of the mistakes is behind me.
Gardening shouldn't be a chore for anyone.
