and I want you to, and since hijacking a thread is so abhorrent to my nature, I've been forced to start a one-post thread.

So, did you guys know that about ten years ago a poster to this forum (Jon) proposed to another poster on this forum (Kate)? We all had to wait a considerable time before Kate arrived online, saw the proposal and responded in the affirmative.

But that's not what I wanted to tell you. I wanted to tell you about the compost pile that Kate and Jon turned on their wedding day (Kate in wedding gown and mucklucs) made out of compostable presents their Garden Web and other friends mailed to them from postmarks around the country. One contributor of wedding feedstock sent a huge box of rose petals from California. I sent a small box of lobstershells and seaweed. Someone sent their income tax refund check. A huge pile was made out of the gifts.

But that's not what I wanted to tell you either. What I wanted to tell you was that Julia Child heard about it somehow and also sent a contribution to the Wedding Compost---a banana peel.

Patrick proposed to me online once, but his proposal was an indecent one. With much flowery language, and cruel doublespeak, he led me to the point of almost interrupting him with "Yes! Yes! Yes!" when it was revealed that what he was proposing was that I send him a few pounds of my fabulous, finished compost. What a heel! "Why buy a microherd, when I can get the compost for free?" he must have thought.

I'm thinking of getting married, and while I wouldn't want to steal another bride's very original wedding idea, the thought of you all sending me generous amounts of feedstock to create a Wedding Pile is very appealing. What say you?

Not to get into a religious debate... because I'm not the most religious guy you'll ever meet. But, you raised the God issue..., and if I remember my Sunday school from 40 years ago there was a little biblical passage from Genesis that read like this: "And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth." I'd say subduing the weeds in my yard would fall under that category.

Thanks, Libby. Now every time I pull a weed, I'll think, "Libby is pulling weeds this way, too." It's so much nicer to have something pleasant to think of during boring work pulling hateful weeds. I wish somebody had a trick for getting out Florida Betony -- those aggravating weeds that have a big 'rattlesnake root' on the end. No matter how damp the soil, or which direction you pull, you get a long piece of white root that breaks where it joins the 'snake' part. A new sprout promptly grows. I pull Florida Betony and Chamberbitter (Phyllanthus urinaria) from every bed I pass. Florida betony stays green all winter, so you can't miss it in an area that was supposedly put to bed for the winter. The sideways pull works great for chamberbitter and the prolific well-branched weed that I don't know the name. Nell

I don't know what they zone changes are supposed to mean, but Wendy, those 2 winters where brutal. The loss of established perennials was devestating to even the local growers and farmers. Imagine the surprise to see a 40 year old beautiful rhodie killed by that January winter as well as 40 year old rose bushes and 25 year old ones as well? I had that happen and to this day, I'm still shocked. Never mind the winter temps, how about the cold, either drowning wet or covered in snow springs? Winter of 2000-2001 in the merrimack valley area outside of Lowell. The kids where taking bets that they would be the first class in history to graduate with snow still on the ground the first week in June. They came pretty close in my yard. The last patches went just about 1 1/2 weeks before. Same thing for the graduating high school class for the winter of 1995-1996. How well I remember, my oldest led the bets for the class of l996, my daughter led the bets for the class of 2001. How about the spring of 2005. The spring temps dipped over night on May 18th to 22 degrees. I had to cover all my wintersown annuals over night. missed a few and they didn't make it. A few days later, on May 22, 2005, hubby and I stood outside after our daughter's college graduation in Waltham MA and watched the snowflakes fall as the temps read 33 degrees? Last spring was nothing but rain, rain, and more rain and very cold temps in the spring. I had over 20 inches of rain fall in just a few days and then another 10 over the next week. Cold, cold rain. I'm not living in zone 6-7 no matter what any chart or revised zone maps say. It's not global warming that is changing the zone maps yet. I'm sure it will happen, but I doupt it will be in our life times. Mother nature is always throwing us curves. Those that are farmers and gardeners notice the curves and bizzare weather extremes far more intensely than the average person does. She's not threw with her curves for this winter, not sure I want to see or experience them either, but we don't have any choices. I'm going to enjoy the warmth as it is and hope that when the weather changes, it won't be a change from one extreme to the other. I'm sure that works great Dave! I have used my basket from my deep fryer that is similar to that one if I'm only doing a few tomatoes. But I am doing a lot of tomatoes and I don't have much time! So grabbing them and throwing them in ice is faster for me! I have 14 quarts of tomato and okra soup in jars so far, 7 on the cooling rack right now and 7 more in the pressure cooker that is almost ready to open! I am sure that I still have enough in the garden for 7 more! Okra and tomatoes are booming right now! I want to get as much put up as I can tonight so that I won't have to clean up the mess again tomorrow! I make a big mess when I can stuff! I'm waiting on the shade to hit the garden before I venture out there it is 92 degrees in the shade and no clouds in the sky! About 15 minutes from now the shade will start to creep across.

Congrats annpat! But you KNOW what all you are gonna get - stale loves of bread, dozens of doughnuts, cornbread fritters, frostbitten hamburger buns, etc. etc. ;)

I'm trying to think of something unique to Arkansas to send...hushpuppies maybe?

I remember Kate and Jon and all the photos of their interbay mulching dates - cool to be reminded of them - thanks. ;)

Congratulations Annpat and un-named future hubby!!!!

Knowing that bread in the pile nauseates you, I'd send a week's worth of UCGs complete with filters. There are always bits of lettuce here and there I could throw in if you think it wise.

I have several loaves of of bread I can retrieve from my pile. It's been raining so they might be a little soggy.

Oh, I made the whole thing up! I'm not getting married. :^ ]

I was tempted to invent a name, background, and everything (John Doe, a greengrocer from Saskatchewan) when I saw what nice gifts Dave and Pam were going to send me. But then I felt that thing I've come to recognize as guilt, so I confess---I made the whole thing up just to get you guys to send me stuff for my compost pile. I'm ashamed.

Awww, gee and here I'd just spent 10 mins. out in a dense morning fog sorting out the finest blades of Arkansas hay I could find.

Got my bald head all wet and for a minute there I even lost my dentures in the soggy pile when they fell out of my shirt pocket. ;)

I've heard of women faking a pregnancy to get a wedding. I don't think I've heard of a woman faking a wedding to get putriscibles.

annpat - that was a mean trick. I haven't been to a wedding in ages and I was trying to decide between a gift of tea leaves or five pound notes. They have about equal value weight for weight in the current economic climate. Flora

I am. I'm feeling terrible. This is as ashamed as I have ever been. It was loathsome of me. I just couldn't think of any other way to get people to send me stuff.

Everyone's so disappointed, maybe we should just go ahead with the whole thing. We could call it the "Wedding" Compost, using airquotes. I'm game if everyone else is.
