Pelicanhead, that looks wonderful. Everything looks so professionally and carefully done...lot of thought and hard work, I know. I'm still a bit tickled by the miracle of thermostats myself...isn't it great to be able to set the temp, and have the fan come on by itself, when you want, and do what you need? (Guess it doesn't take much to entertain me.)

That reminds me, I still need to redo my electricals. I am thinking of just hiring a licensed electrician to run the power from the house to the GH and have a properly built electrical board.

Regarding the light, one layer of shade fabric should not be enough to cause very low light conditions in the GH. In fact, in Southern California one layer is sometimes not enough.
My GH has a 60% Aluminet on the outside, and supplemental patches of 50% generic shadecloth inside and during the day it still gets between 3000-5000fc at different areas.

Wetfeet, what do you use to measure the (footcandles of) light in your greenhouse? I often think it would be convenient to really know the light level of different areas in my greenhouse...rather than guessing. My greenhouse is getting to be a collection of supplemental shadecloth patches, as I figure out what various plants want.

mudhouse, there is a wide range of light intensity meters that are available in the market to measure light levels.

For hobbyists, there are products that range from $10 to $30.
The lower end ones just have a single scale from 0 through 10,000 foot-candles. Their sensitivity is not top-grade but most are accurate down to 300-500fc. This is usually enough to let you know if a particular spot will be good for a specific plant that you want to grow.

Some higher end models like professinal-grade photometers have other nifty features and are sensitive down to 5-10fc but is overkill (and too expensive) for the casual grower. These are more appropriate for serious photographers rather than gardeners.

Just shop around at garden supply vendors online and look for "light intensity meter" and you should be able to find one that fits your needs.
Also, make sure that the scale is in the units that you prefer. Most LIM's use foot-candles, but some may use other units such as lumens and lux.
