New garden bed preparation question

I have a current 12x8 plot, and am wishing to add another one of the same size right next to it (its just grass there right now). My original plan was to throw down some compost and composted manure, till it all in with the grass, and go from there.

But the more I read on here, the more I'm prompted not to till. I understand why it may be better not to, but how would I get the compost into the soil since it's a new plot?

Also, what would I lay down to kill the grass, and for how long? Right now there is no snow, but it's wet, and the grass is dead. And I have 2+ months before I need to start planting. Either way, I'm elated to double my planting space! :D
