greenhouse shade cloth???

in the near future i will be purchasing a 24x60 greenhouse. the greenhouse is going to be in the san antonio area. the only question that i have is what type of shade cloth to put on. i was wondering if anyone in the area had any suggestions on what on what shade cloth to use...50%, 70%?????

I am in Corpus so our heat will be about the same. I put on 70% shade cloth and my roof panels are 25%.

A grower down at Rivera told us his shade cloth is 90% and he grows tomatoes for resale. I guess our sun and heat are very intense.

I would go with a min. of 70%. Yesterday it was 93 here and my 18 x 24 greenhouse never got over 82. Before it was getting around 113 so I am very happy with the shade cloth.

I'm not sure how to figure the 25% roof and an additional 70% on top. I think my shade is somewhere around 85% now and I do have tomatoes and other sun lovers inside. They all seem to be very happy including my cactus!

Thanks so much for your information. You said all your plants are loving it, including your cactus. What type of cactus do you have in there? I have a couple astrophytum, and ariocarpus, and was wondering if they will do good in there too. i aslo plan to start a bunch from seed soon, so i need to know a good place for them in the future. any way, thanks again for the information.

I don't have this specific greenhouse, but another brand of small hobby greenhouse. The shade cloth that came with mine had grommets on the end, so I tied some twine through the grommets and staked down the shadecloth on the outside of the greenhouse. Not pretty but it works.

Hi, We found a greenhouse tubing bender on ebay $39.00. I checked out the seller and their feed back on the benders was good. It does indeed work great and fast just like they say. We built our 10x20 hoophouse using steel tubes used for fence toprail for under 300.00 plastic covering and door. In your location all you need is the frame then tie shade cloth to it. It should block most of the wind to. They have a web site also lostcreek greenhouses I think the bender prices are higher on their web site but still worth. I'll have to look it up.

We are that way with birds too. Lovely and really cute pics of them eating jelly. I will show DH tonight. He will get a real charge out of it. The Baltimore Oriole is just gorgeous. I haven't seen them in years. I buy birdseed with dehydrated cherries in the mix. It is a good all-around mix for many species. I know the Cardinals rob my cherry trees every year. I am lucky if I have enough to make a few pints of preserves. The Blue Jays do too and they peck our peaches and apples. I just cut out the pecks and eat them anyway. I haven't seen the Cardinals go after anything except the cherries. Anyway, I love your wonderful anecdotal stories and photos. ~Annie
