3 with no growth showing yet

After this polar vortex-y type of a winter, we cut all roses to the ground. Today in mid April, when it is typically 50-60ish degrees, it is snowing off and on w/ flurries. Two days ago it was 81 degrees. OK.

So I have 3 roses who have not shown any growth whatsoever. Lyda and Duchesse de Brabant and one whose name is escaping me. Is the jury still out? Everything else is alive, including Arethusa, Cramoisis Superieur and Clementina Carbonieri. My 2 HPs also alive, but I think they are zone 5.

Do you usually cut Tea roses to the ground where you're at? I seem to recall that Teas rarely enjoy being pruned that harshly, and often give up the ghost. I had a Vintage band up and die within a day after I snipped off a dead limb. It was a Tea-Noisette.

We had the polar vortex and a brutal winter so I had no choice. However, the Cramoisi Sup came back like a champ.

Keep the soil around them moist, even soggy, and they will eventually show up. The Cinnamon Fern usually is found in very moist habitats; bogs, creek banks, sinks in forest floor, etc., but can be grown in a garden setting. Once established, they can tolerate less than ideal conditions. In a long drought period, they will go dormant, but with winter moisture, they will reappear the following spring.

I have a feeling you are not going to have any dahlias this year. Your dahlias should be starting to bud, even bloom by now. I would certainly contact Swan Island so that you can get advice and a guarantee of good bulbs for next year. Did you verify that the tubers you got had eyes on them? Personally, I have had the worst luck buying tubers from mail order companies. I have been growing dahlias for about 10 years, and the best ones I get are the ones I buy from Home Depot and Lowes. I have bought from some of the best rated dahlia suppliers, and they do not grow well. I planted 14 tubers this year, and none are in bloom and at least half of them are too small at this stage to grow enough to produce blooms. And the cool spring and early summer certainly did not help.

I have no advice for what your plumeria is experiencing since I'm a newbie but I can recommend these following nurserys: Maui Plumeria Gardens -- Doug sends wonderful green fat plump healthy cuttings that arrive at your door within 2 business days. He also sends you a mystery cutting. With my last order, I got 2 free mystery cuttings, which both are doing splendid -- actually one has 3 to 3 1/2 sized leaves on it. My Maui beauty that I got from him has about 3 inch leaf plus an inflo forming. I've just recently bought from Florida Nursery colors -- the two cuttings that I received was rather slender but looks good. Plus I found that they are very nice people. If they don't have a cutting that you want, they will let you pick a replacement. I've corresponded with them with over several emails while Carol patiently awaited my decision. Also I purchased from Upland Nursery -- some cuttings can be a bit pricey there but the two that I received were nice fat plump cuttings which I can't wait for them to grow leaves and eventually bloom.

Various peonies start showing growth at different times. There is no set time table however the doubles being late bloomers generally emerge later. Some years like last year in my areas it made no difference when they came up they all bloomed within a three week period vs the six or more weeks that had been normal. Peonies like many plants need patience and I would not expect blooms this year and perhaps even next year as they need time in the ground to establish a root system before wasting their resources building a bloom bud. A few growers do/did divide so that there was one mature bloom size bud on the division but that was not common.

You didn't notice the cold from the Arctic enveloping so much of the middle tier of the country this year. That's ok, obliviousness happens to all of us.

Right now, it's too early to decide what's dead and what isn't. Spring is sort of getting condensed into several weeks that should be taking several months.

I still find new growth emerging where a month ago there was none (and in years past the growth would be happeneing out on healthy canes).

Redsox, you're going to have to give them another month. After THIS cold spell, uncover the soil....pull mulch back, and water the roots well. Dilutest organic fertilizer (maybe fish emulsions) on the roots may help wake them up.

Just because above ground are dead (and some to a lot of them may be really dead) doesn't mean that we can't get new growth from the roots......we just need to give them Tender Loving Care and the more obsessive the better.

I tend to leave a lot of old canes in place, in part to support new growth and also to deter hungry rabbits who go for the freshest new growth but who won't go through dead canes to get to it.

All but my toughest roses died back all the way to the mulch line. So to try and get them thru Winter Part Two, i completely covered all the new growth with mulch. The few!! that were too tall to cover up will just have to deal. Meanwhile my yard looks ridiculous from our effprts to cover all the most vulnerable shrubs...tarps, dropcloths, tubs, and some fetching sack-dresses i made and popped over what i could. Gardeners are crazy, and i am the worst.

Same here Prairie Laura! My garden looks like a refugee camp. LOL. I covered lots of tender new growth on perennials and annual salvias. Potted roses I took into the garage (again).
I fretted all winter and I'm just done with that. It's Darwinian from now on!
