Thanks thorn grower, I was thinking more of a rose that would inter-twine with the fence.

I have Crepuscule, Alister Stella Gray and Celine Forrestier. So far ASG isn't behaving like a climber and he's been there for three years now. This is the second growing season for Crepuscule and it looks like this one is going to really cover the fence. Celine is also doing what I had hoped she would, stretching out to cover the top of the fence.

I know you are in a colder zone, but just to give you an idea. DIL has 200+/- linear feet and she has grown Mermaid to climb and interspersed it with Knock Out at about 10-ft intervals. The 200 feet is 3 sides. Their courtyard is connected to this area but is fronted with a privacy fence for the fourth side.

I have a rambler and Eden on this fence.

Just about any of the nice old ramblers (except the Barbiers & the tender warm-climate ones) would be great for your split-rail fence!

This is kind of an obvious choice, but if you like it and your fence is big enough New Dawn will work (unless your aesthetic sense objects to a hybrid tea style bloom on a split rail fence).

I was just reading the Rose Bible by Ray R. and he suggested Thalia (rambler) for a split rail fence. It looks really nice, but it is a once bloomer. Don't grow it, but it caught my attention!

The Gardens of the American Rose Center has an assortment of hybrid musks (I think) draped along a split rail fence similar to the one in this pic, one per corner, alternating sides. Oh, if I only had the space...

It's only been on my split rail a week, but Sombreuil already looks so beautiful trailed on the rails.

Started with own-root 5 gallons.

A once-bloomer but hardy in your zone, with thornless canes that are easy to train, Veilchenblau is a beautiful rose.
