What do you consider to be the best of the poly-teas, in terms of disease resistance, good rebloom, and attractive foliage and growth habit?

Will they accept shaping and light pruning each year?

I was going to plant some teas in a drivewway border, but am now considering a collection of the poly-teas. I have a small Perle d'Or as a start to my collection. (I hope Vintage has the others available).

Oh, and how far apart should they be spaced?

Sandy, I LOVE Perle.
I also HIGHLY recommend Lady Ann Kidwell
and
Leonie Lamesch.

Also look into 'Tip Top,' another of Peter Lambert's roses.
The Lambert roses in particular (Lamesch and Tip Top) have particularly beautiful "peach leaf" foliage.

All of those, of course, should be spared much pruning.
Shape lightly. Do not prune heavily.

OH! And don't forget Cecile Brunner (the bush form) or if you want something a bit taller, 'Spray Cecile Brunner.'

Jeri, the Vintage Book of roses mentions some that are supposed to be in the same category. Lady Kidwell is mentioned. The others listed are Pasadena Tournament, Red Sweetheart, Rita Simmons, Improved Cecile Brunner (whatever that is, perhaps White Cecile?), and Topaz. Topaz is showing a different growth habit, while the others are shown as the same.

Do you have any experience with these others?

Tip Top sounds nice, as does Leonie.

I do not know anything about Thisbe, but if you are interested in a yellowish hybrd musk, take a look at a newer one name "Jeri Jennings." I have two which are a couple years old--not heavy bloomers yet, but a very charming blooming in clusters that make a lovely mix of older fading blooms of a nice creamy shade and nearly golden yellow new blooms, with all shades inbetween. Really attractive! My only complaint so far about Jeri Jennings is that she hasn't proven as disease-resistant as I'd wish--but not terrible on that score either. Just another possibility. Kate

I only refrigerate seeds to prevent germination until the weather is SUPPOSED to cooperate, Jay. The traditional press on germination has stated they stop germinating when temps rise about 70 F, but that is NOT what I have experienced here the past three years. Supposedly, the weather here in SoCal is to cool and begin raining around Thanksgiving. Years ago I selected that as my targeted planting time because of that and my schedule. Some years I have been able to hit the target, some not, planting as late as January. I do know if I plant before late November, it's going to be HOT, DRY and WINDY, none of which are easy conditions to attempt raising seeds in. I created the seed tables with the thoughts that 8" deep soil insulates tremendously better than anything shallower and remains damper longer. The tables are 2' deep by 4' long, providing a huge soil mass for insulation and water retention. They're made of fir fencing which is inexpensive and readily available. The dimensions were also chosen because they require two cuts per standard fencing board size, so I could easily, usually free, have the store accomplish all of my cuts so I don't have to break out the saw at home. That large of a soil mass also permits them to remain in the tables until I transplant them into individual pots when readying the tables for the next batch of seeds. Sequoia transplanted throughout summer because they could put them under mist to stabilize before putting them inside a greenhouse to harden off. I can't, so they must remain growing in the tables until repotting. You may consider using something larger and deeper than flats, unless they're inside a greenhouse where they won't dry out quickly. I don't sterilize my seeds, but I do attempt to remove as much of the pulp as possible so they don't mold in the storage bags until I plant them. As long as the pulp and fibers aren't wet, they usually don't mold. Sometimes they remain in the refrigerator quite a few months. I recently harvested self set seed from one of my seedlings to sow this fall. Those are fairly clean and I've allowed them to air dry before storing them in the refrigerator because I can't successfully plant them for another five and a half to six months. I'm sure there will be seeds which are harvested when I plant. Those won't be cooled (stratified) at all and most simply won't need it. I planted seeds from another seedling this spring straight from the hips to the soil and they're germinating. If it remains cooler (lower than the eighties) in your conditions, and you can keep them properly watered, go ahead and plant them. That won't be the case here! It is guaranteed to be hot, windy and dry. Add the overly brilliant sun and newly germinated seedlings will fry quickly. My situation and conditions don't permit me to protect them from the extremes. "Baby" plants won't tolerate them any better than baby animals or people will. We've already experienced the range from mid forties to low triple digits since January and more seedlings are pushing through the surface each week. Only those which emerge during cooler, less extreme conditions make it. It's disheartening to watch them emerge and dry out, like feeding emerging faxes into a paper shredder, but I figure only the best are going to survive, so that should help in the culling process. If their root systems are sufficiently vigorous to maintain them through the hottest, most brilliant periods, they should be decent plants. I can already see which are healthy and which are definitely not. More than likely, those which are already heavily mildewing would clean up substantially if I budded them, but that would possibly supply more varieties which would make bad own root plants. I may miss some beautiful, interesting novelties, but at what price? I hope I've helped give you some useful ideas to tweak your method. Good luck! Kim

Oh, I LOVE hydrangeas! There aren't many that will grow here very well, but I'm planning on researching it out. There is a native Florida one, but it needs tons of shade, and I don't have what I would consider dense shade. I have just one spot under two palm trees that doesn't really get direct sun, only bright light, but I planted a baby antique camellia there. I don't know if I should move it or not, as it looks ecstatically heppy there and is growing like a weed. However, most camellias need some sun in order to bloom well. I may ask the man that propagated it what he thinks. If it'll bloom in that spot, I'm not going to move it. I can't wait to see how your garden evolves. It sounds as though you've got ideas starting to come to life. I'm glad that you are open minded. When I had the mind set that I HAD to grow roses in my shadier spots, I failed miserably. They were not happy or very healthy for long, and that made ME unhappy. Now that I work with the conditions I have, and plant accordingly, gardening is so much more enjoyable. It's opened up a whole new world. The roses that are planted where they belong, instead of where I dictated they go, are absolutely stunning. They are babies, and they are taking off like crazy, with beautiful foliage as well as blooms. I don't spray either. One of my old gardening magazines that I was browsing through today showed a planting of beautiful shrub roses. The text that went with it stated that the roses weren't so lush and beautiful because of the soil. They were that way because of the available sunshine. The Poly-Tea Perle d'Or is a good suggestion. I probably should have gone that route too, but I have some teas instead. Like you, I have small garden areas and teas really don't fit in them size-wise, and they look more graceful if you can limit their pruning. I have had to prune my teas in a manner that is not in their best interest (just to make them "fit" their space). If you have one area that has sufficient space, I like the previously mentioned idea of getting one tea and placing it there ... they really are beautiful plants where space is adequate. By contrast, you will have to "fight" them in too small of a space, and it's a shame to have to fight these beauties. Randy

That's Rita Sammons. I think she is a darker form of Cecile Brunner, maybe a bit more Salmon-colored.
Improved Cecile Brunner, I dunno -- unless that is a different term for Spray Cecile Brunner.
That last is glorious in the Sacramento City Cemetery.
PT and RSw I do not know, but I have wanted Topaz.
Who could resist a rose named Topaz (my birthstone, btw)?

Mind -- I have NO clue about blackspot on any of these roses.

These are great roses. Cecile Brunner, Cecile Spray, Perle d'Or, White Cecile Brunner, Rita Sammons, Etoile de Mai, Lady Ann Kidwell, Leonie Lamesch, Red Sweetheart are healthy easy to grow here. Once established can be pruned/shaped. Pasadena Tournament and Topaz are in pots but I'm expecting great things from them also. While I would never be without a form of Cecile Brunner, Etoile de Mai is an outstanding performer and my favorite the 3 years it's been in the ground.

Sandy, when I saw Hamp's photo of La Marne, I gasped, and you will, too. And according to Malcolm, it grows great on its own roots in Florida!

Jeri, my birthstone is also a topaz, so I'm going to have to order that one for sure.

Lisa, do you grow yours no-spray? If so, and they do well for you, they should also do well for me, as we are probably both similar with the humidity aspect in the summers.

Sherry, thanks for the LaMarne link. I have a "mystery" rose from Taylor Gardens that Gouda said was supposed to be Seven Sisters from wherever she had ordered the roses from (some time ago), but obviously is not. It's a pretty little thing and looks a lot like LaMarne. She doesn't think that's what it is though. Gets some spotted leaves, but not enough to bother me at this point, so we'll see how it does. Maybe it just wants out of the pot.

I do know that LaMarne bleaches out rather quickly here, except for maybe early in the spring, and possibly late fall.

Tomorrow I'm placing my order to Vintage. I've been weeding our stupid lawn for two weeks since we can't really afford to switch over to something more ecologically friendly (if hired out) just yet, and I'm getting burned out and don't feel I can handle doing it myself right now.... so it'll have to wait awhile. I think I need a wheelchair right now. I don't know why we don't grow normal lawn weeds like clovers, etc. that I wouldn't mind having. Noooo.... we've got to grow nettles and sand burrs, and then the fire ants move in.

I deserve this Vintage order! Duchesse nalabama, you deserve one too. (I know, I'm a VERY bad influence).

Sherry, yes I am no spray. The ones listed may get some BS during the season but not enough to notice and certainly don't defoliate. The most noticeable would be Lady Ann Kidwell as she is more willowy and not as thickly foliated anyway. Also those I listed don't get PM as some of the polys get here in the spring e.g. LaMarne, Marie Jeanne, Marie Pavie, Cameo, Heinrich Karsch are some that get some PM in spring here.

You'll enjoy growing some tea/polys,
