eden climbing rose

Some gardeners have said that they have had no luck with Eden roses in zone 5. I love this rose and would like to hear from anyone if they have had luck with this rose in zone 5 or below 5. I would like to plant the Eden climber.

I love my Eden climber here in Zone 6. Although some posters complain about the rebloom, mine reblooms, although not as fully as during the spring bloom.

It is only marginally hardy as a climber. Some years severe winterkill so that it could barely be called a bush. I adored the flowers on my Eden (although no scent) but shovel-pruned it a few years ago because it was so sporadic in growth. One year I got it halfway up my trellis fence, then the next after a bad winter it had to be cut to the ground, then proceeded to send out uneven canes the rest of the summer. Just a mess that couldn't justify the beautiful flowers.

Thanks roseberri. I played it safe and planted New Dawn and Zephirine Drouhin on my large arbor out back(south side). I expect New Dawn to take off...not sure how quickly Zephirine will go, but it is a fairly large rose already and I didn't have much of a choice as it goes right by the walkway now that I have them both in the ground and can see how they sit. Both are blooming and doing fine though. Red and White Eden are still in pots. Regular Eden was sold out at the nursery. I feel like Red and White Eden are somewhat of a risk being relatively new plants(circa 2004) and hearing less about them, but I'll be quite happy if it works out. The spot I am putting them in is on the north side of the house, but far enough in front of the house that Red and White Eden will probably get more sun than any rose I currently have planted. You mentioned Eden would work for smaller settings, so I am only building a small 4'wide x 7'tall simple arbor for out front(haha just to make room for them). Something simple and just to walk through although with such a small yard it will probably become a focal point. If you are familar with Victorian Village in Columbus roseberri, then you can grasp the size of my small area. I'll have to keep everybody updated on how Red and White Eden do as Red isn't even an "Eden" genetically, and I believe White is a sibling of Eden. Both relatively new and I might wrap the whole arbor and roses with burlap this winter. Hard saying right now. I just want the arbor thrown up and the roses in the ground already! Can't wait.

I don't have a Red Eden, but I had one given to me, which contracted RRD along with many others and of course, I shovel pruned it. The owner who had Eden (in several locations) wanted Red Eden (because her husband likes red) and after 3 years they were not pleased with the lack of bloom, so she gave it to me. I did not have it long enough to speak to its performance as it never bloomed in the 6 months it was in my garden but then I planted it in warmer weather and it spent all its time settling in and eventually contracting RRD from other roses in my garden. But, the lady who had it is very particular about roses and they like bloom and their garden is their pride and joy and this one did not please them. They give away many roses that do not perform well as what they want is bloom and they always liked to compete (and win) in ARS shows.

Hi Candace, I would leave Eden where you have it, and train the canes out along the fence on either side, allowing them to spill down at the ends. I can confirm, from personal experience, that Eden will bow down and still bloom -- at least to the level of its roots. But as Cynthia notes, roses whose canes drape too far below horizontal can have issues (circulation problems? Anyone know how to explain this?) I'm not sure if Eden would enjoy hanging straight down over your fence -- it probably needs to go up or along the fence for at least as much distance as it will drape down. Imagine sort of fanning it out along the fence in both directions. Below is a picture of mine (own root, I think four years old now) which, last summer, was draping over my five-foot fence (at right) and hanging into the garden. This year it looks super awkward, as I chopped some of the canes leaning into my garden due to a midge issue, and encouraged it to sprawl in front of the alley to discourage a public urination issue (yeah... gross). But I think this picture will help you visualize the possibilities for yours. I would not remove the fence, as it will give the rose a bit of support.

You might try going to the Northland Rosarium website and ask if it does well there. I believe they sell that rose and they're in zone 5...so they might have some insights as to how hardy it might be for you :)

I also love Eden. Has been in my garden for 5 years. Prime real estate, prime care but still has to be cut back every spring. Recovers enough to put out a few shy blossoms. I have a 3 ft. trellis poised over it , waiting for substantial growth , but this year it may meet the shovel.
Such a beautiful rose.

I know I am recommending Northland Rosarium a lot but I love their roses! They are located up north I believe in zone 5 so the roses they grow are for that climate also. Plus they are own root. If you go to their website, you can read for yourself about their own root roses. The benefit for own root in zone 5 is if it dies back during the winter, it will grow again in the spring since it will re-grow form it's own roots. Grafted roses cannot do that. Also I am in zone 7, and I have two Eden roses. One is grafted, and the other is own root from Northland Rosarium. The grafted one I bought a year before, and a year later bought the own root Eden. Well the own root rose has almost caught up to the grafted one, plus the own root one grows new canes from the ground that the grafted one cannot. I am eagerly awaiting bloom right now, and I will post pics as soon as I can.

I am in Z6/7 and my Edens are basically once-bloomers. Pretty, unscented and early to leaf out, promising a lot but not doing all that much "climbing" yet after 3 years. I put a DA "Shropshire Lad" smack in the middle of them last Sat & thought I'd let them fight it out this year. I am not in love with the Edens, though I am a DA fanatic, so it could be my personal bias talking. Gertrude Jeykll and Brother Cadfael are said to be awesome climbers for Z5.

I love the Autin roses, too. If Eden doesn't
snap to it, I have a CLIMBING Generous Gardener just waiting to take its spot. Maybe this threat will inspire great things. lol

My White Eden(sport of Eden) was mildly disappointing last year in it's 1st year in the ground. It didn't put out much growth at all and only gave me 2 blooms. While the growth hasn't been stupendous yet this spring, much to my surprise, I noticed small buds all around White Eden. White Eden is still small, so the fact that it has 20-25 buds on it is spectacular news in comparison to last year. I researched Eden(White Eden is the same thing) and it seems to be the same story. The rose tends to take a solid 3 years for most people before it starts to take root and put on a show. I'm hoping mine can put out some growth to start filling out a trellis. So far, it's off to a much better start with all the buds. I'm excited to see it in full bloom by the end of the month.

Hi Marjs, I live in zone 5 smack in the middle of OH and have my Eden for ten or more years. It has gotten to 8 feet some years, but most years it gets to 4 ft. It blooms beautifully in June and very sparingly the rest of the summer and fall. I love it anyway and will never get rid of it but it is not on my trellis anymore!It also has no fragrance, just another pretty face!
