What is on your Essential, Must Have List?

Jeri said to me last weekend "Perle d'Or" is one of the essential roses to have.

I am forever and hooked on Antique Roses! I have turned a new page in my education. Still a Rookie, but ready to learn.

Any and comments welcome!

Daun, I'm not either of those people but I have had a Perle for 7-8 years and I would not be without one. I love this little powerhouse.

When I was very little, my mother was struggling with keeping two climbing Peace roses in good health in the desert of west Texas, in Odessa. They grew on a trellis surrounding the window of my older brother's bedroom. I used to climb up the iron trellis and sit on the shelf under the window to read comic books and swat at the bumble bees that would amble past. Those roses were the size of the dinner plates Mother served us with! Later we moved back to east Texas, near my grandparents home, and I saw other types of roses. My grandmother always had a couple of old "Sweetheart Roses" (Cecile Brunner), and she would point out other old roses, and other heritage plants as well when I or a cousin would show an interest. She was NOT an avid hobby gardener- she had 13 children, (my mother was her middle 7th child), and needless to say, her hands were very full with children, grandchildren, my grandfather, being active in her church, and the Eastern Stars, among other things. She always had a neat, tidy yard, and they grew an enormous vegetable garden to feed the family, kept chickens for eggs and meat, had a couple of cows for milk and butter, etc. Their life style was one of a simpler day, and with very little "cash money", she wasn't about to spend it on flowers for her yard! When she was an old lady, she would smile at the efforts people would go to in order to maintain a St. Augustine lawn, and a bunch of landscaper designed plantings. In her day, passalong plants were about all she and her cronies had, and she loved all of them for the ease of care: plant, water during droughts, and let them fend for themselves! Anyone who lives in the south can recognize what I call the "Granny Yard": a couple of OGRs, some honeysuckle that has to be beaten back every few years to keep it from taking over the world, a wisteria of the same ambitious nature, a magnolia, a pecan, a couple of oaks or ashes, a warty looking "toothache tree", maybe a willow if there is a pond nearby, a bunch of volunteer onions and garlics here and there, oh, and of course the easter lilies of yesteryear in a bed at the back corner of the house... 'Fess up. You have all visited this house! I know you have! In my twenties as a young mother I played at gardening, and suffered disappointment after disappointment when my hybrid teas and grandifloras would croak for lack of high culture. I just could not make myself get too excited about anything that was that high maintenance. One year my mother in law mentioned that one of my sister's in law wanted a "start" of her old "Sweetheart Rose", and asked if I would like one too. That sparked the memory, and soon I had my own little Cecile growing in my yard. I have moved away, and didn't know about cuttings back then, so I didn't preserve that plant through the years. But luckily it is one that is widely available. I filed away for future reference the note that those old garden roses really are tough as an old boot. We bought this home in 1999, and when I was ready to finally start a real garden, I was introduced to the Antique Rose Emporium here in Texas. Good question to ask here on the Antique Rose Forum, Aimee! I enjoyed reading the answers of other ORG lovers and discovered some really exciting roses this way for myself! Here is my input: Hybrid Teas: Anna Pavlova. This one is a real gem in my opinion that found its way into my garden by accident. I do believe it is a rarely grown HT even though it was just released in 1981, that deserves more attention. Very beautifully formed, pale pink, full bloom and a surprisingly strong damask fragrance to die for. Frederic Mistral. A winner in my garden, light warm pink color and strong fragrance. Vigorous grower. Memorial Day. Deep pink color, huge blooms with a very intense perfume. Moonstone. Huge and I mean really huge classic white HT blooms with a pink edge. Very good cut flower. Unfortunately I only can smell a very faint scent. Mr. Lincoln. Dark red, that fades to blue-ish red, which I love, with a super strong fragrance. If you are looking for a red rose to give to the very special person in your life, this is the one. Pope John Paul II. My favorite white modern HT. The flowers are humongous and the fragrance knocks your socks of and is wafting. Vigorous rose in my garden that has been never without flowers since the first flush this year. Floribundas: Iceberg and Iceberg, climbing. I love them because they are so floriferous here in SoCa. Always give you a reliable punch of white color, where you need it. Only flaw in my garden susceptible to mildew at certain times of the year, but the advantages outweigh this drawback. Nimbus. Very unusual flower color. Brownish-mauve at times. It is a very special interesting rose, that I am sure will not be loved by everyone, but if you are into unusual colors it might be the one for you. Our Lady of Guadalupe. Silvery shine on cool pink flowers that open in a very elegant way. Grandifloras: Sweetness. Relatively new introduction. Produces very beautiful lavender colored blooms with a strong fragrance. What stands out for me is that this rose is completely healthy in my garden. That is very rare for a lavender colored rose, which are known to be disease prone. Shrub Roses: Belindas Dream. Very awesome, full pink flowers. Strong fragrance. Cymbeline. Older David Austin rose with a very unusual elegant almost pink-grayish color, that is hard to describe. Eden Rose 88/Pierre de Ronsard. To me one of the most beautiful modern roses with an old-fashioned look. Flowers are large, cupped and very full. Color is a creamy white with pink in the center. Even though many people claim that this rose has no scent, I can clearly detect a pleasant, mild, fruity, fragrance. Pretty Jessica. Small bush with exquisite, clear pink, very cupped, flowers. I like that this rose doesn't get the monster size of many other David Austin roses. Scepter'd Isle. Very elegant, pale pink, cupped shaped, flowers with a strong myrrh fragrance. It shows it yellow stamens in a very charming way, when the flower gets older. My plant is still very young but so far I love it. The Ingenious Mr. Fairchild. Also new to me, but already won my heart over with its strong citrus fragrance and beautiful, pink (darker in the center), cupped shaped, blooms. The Prince. Another new arrival in my garden, but boy the very dark crimson flowers fading to a wonderful dark purple color of this rose are just outstanding. It looks almost like velvet and the intense fragrance is another nice addition to the already very impressive blooms. Christina

I think David Austin's best white has to be ROSE-MARIE, the white sport of HERITAGE. It is a good bloomer, vigorous, and forms a graceful shrub. The vase life of the bloom is shorter and the color is more of a creamy white, but still a very beautiful bloom. BTW, if you are going to get any vase life out of the rose you must cut the bloom while it is still in bud. Don't worry if the bud hasn't cracked yet. As long as one or two sepals are down you should be fine. I didn't like GLAMIS CASTLE because the myrrh fragrance was obnoxious (the blooms also shatter easily). As you folks have guessed "myrrh" can vary quite a bit. With Fair Bianca the fragrance is acceptable because of a subtle vanilla-like base note, which is why the rose marries so well with the annual Heliotrope. Tamora has a delicious myrrh fragrance because of a fruity top note. CLAIR AUSTIN is the hot new English white right now but I haven't had a chance to grow it yet. I'm dying to try BOULE DE NEIGE, a white Bourbon hybridized by Francois Lacharme in 1867. I have its pinkish-white sister COQUETTE DES BLANCHES growing in my mother's zone 7b garden and it is an exceptionally beautiful plant. The blooms are small but are blessed with perfect OGR flower form and appear in lovely sprays on a graceful (and healthy) shrub. CdB has a very strong, sweet fragrance that must be smelled to be believed. Of course no white rose can compare in beauty to the classic Damask MADAME HARDY (1832). I've searched my whole life as a rosarian for a repeat blooming substitute and have yet to find it. That is why I like Fair Bianca so much. The bloom is similar. Alas the fragrance isn't as fine, the chartreuse button eye doesn't have as much visual punch as Mme. Hardy's emerald green pip, and the plant ... well it's a joke to even try comparing the two for vigor and graceful growth habit. SOMBREUIL is a gorgeous white climber but the blooms are more of a flattened rosette verses Mme. Hardy's silky white quartered perfection. Sigh...

Hey Rosefolly - we of the humble state of Nebraska appreciate the shout-out to the botanical gardens in Omaha (Lauritzen Gardens, I presume). Glad you enjoyed it but you sounded surprised that we can grow nice gardens here in the Plains (smile). It is definitely a tough climate for gardening, but you know that if the plants survive our winters as well as summers they're a good bet for a tricky situation. Those gardens are a nice testament to what can happen with donors who set up an enduring fund to support the gardens after they themselves are gone. As for books, I don't have much to offer as I haven't read any of the ones you mention. I have a book by Vita Sackville-West that I keep meaning to get around to that includes roses among other plants she grew in Sissinghurst. Beyond that, there's a more contemporary book called something like "Gallant Gents and Painted Ladies" (I must have the title wrong as I can't find that one exactly) that takes 100 roses and talks about the historical figures referenced in the names of those roses with nice period-looking illustrations of the roses themselves. I hope you love it as much as I do!

Our local rose society had a "Celebration Of Roses" last Thursday evening.
DH and I took a big "milk bottle" full of "Grandmother's Hat" blooms, and one of our other members did the same.
It was wonderful to see people burying their noses in those big, voluptuous blooms.

All of mine are still young. I have many of the Teas and Chinas that you all have mentioned, but I think my favorites so far are:

Mme Caroline Testout - in the ground 4 months and pumping out her big pink flowers

Maman Cochet, Climbing - in the ground less than 2 months with big, fat, beautiful flowers. I'm looking to add the other Cochets.

Rosette Delizy - just got her as a band a few weeks ago. Today I saw her first bud with the petals showing. Oh, my!

Cramoisi Superieur - luscious red, smelly flowers

*** Yes.
It has also been sold as 'Mrs. R.G. Sharman-Crawford' (probably isn't)
and as 'Cornet.' (it isn't).

There are several other study names: "Northside Pink," and the truly original studyname: "Altadena Drive HP."

There's overall concensus for the "Grandmother's Hat" study name.

Gosh...your photos are so pretty. Coincidentally, those two roses are on my non-essential list - the roses I've lost and decided not to replace. The other rose on that list was Cl. Clothilde Soupert, another rose you've plugged so well on this forum that it's gone back on my wish list. Maybe it's because they all died before ever blooming, and that's why I don't feel I "need" them. I actually lost RdV babies twice. I'm seriously thinking of replacing them now (and SdLM) You are truly the Supreme Enabler.

You know, I like GM's hat but Larry Daniels has been much more resistant to blackspot and the blooms last longer than GM's Hat.

OTOH, Larry has reached a superb three feet here, in about 6 years. NOT acceptable (to me).
But then, we don't "do" blackspot. :-)

Hi, Daun - I'm not snubbing you, just have been down at Hearst Castle. What an enchanted couple of days it has been.

Essential roses - an interesting idea - it certainly varies based on where you live and how much space you have. The essential roses in the cemetery are very different from what I grow at home, because I just don't have much space. Thinking about it, I guess it's a question of what rose would I never shovel prune, or would I want to plant if I have to reconstitute a garden at some point.

At home, the most rewarding rose is Archduke Charles, for sheer flower volume and the range of color. White Pearl in Red Dragon's Mouth will always have a place in my garden, too. I get great joy from Lady Hillingdon, and Barbara's Pasture Rose (La Reine, perhaps). I don't want to live without Portland from Glendora, even though she is encroaching on my walkway and is going to need cinching back once I'm home. I also love, love, love my eglantine, another rose that is much too big but makes me happy every single day with its fragrant foliage and beautiful hips (the flowers are nice but not the reason to grow this rose). I have a Perle d'Or at home, and agree that it's pretty essential. I also really love Paul Neyron, which performs quite well for me and breaks my heart with its fat, peony-like buds and cabbage roses.

Two other roses that I would not want to be without at home are Alfred de Dalmas, which reblooms well and is so delicate, and Cristata, which is incredibly fragrant and interesting. If I didn't have access to a number of Autumn Damasks in the cemetery, I'd probably have to plant one at home, just for the fragrance.

My list of essential roses for the cemetery would probably number at least 50. I'm not even going to start!
