Northern Bayberry pruning help.

I have been growing Northern Bayberry as an informal hedge for three years. I guess I have been lucky with the pruning, as I don't really know exactly what I am doing. I just cut back hard in the early spring, and sometimes the tips in summer. I don't really care if the get berries. I want the plants to stay this size and full. Does anyone know if I should cut out some of the larger stalks to promote new growth from the bottom? Will the bottom eventually become bare if I continue to prune the way I am? I also try to keep my Lilacs like this. I cut out one large stalk every year after they flower. The Lilacs always send up new growth. I'm just wondering if the Bayberry will too.
