China Doll, Cl. or Otto Linne

I have both and they are not the same..at least the ones I have. China Doll, CL appears to be the same as Weeping China Doll (the name I've always known it by). GOL has very similar bloom style but the foliage is entirely different as well as the growth habit. I've linked to a picture where mine are growing in the same bed..both unpruned and about the same age. GOL is on the left.

I have China Doll, Weeping China Doll, and Otto. Tho his blooms are rather similiar, Otto is definitely not a Doll.

Thanks for the warning about Brother Cadfael. Now I'm agonizing on where to put the roes and whether or not to displace my two Pinkie's that I put next to the pillars in the front bc of their reputation for thornlessness (hah!) and reliable, almost constant rebloom. Two things about Pinkie that I don't love for that coveted position next to the front entrance 1) No fragrance 2) Small blooms that aren't very full/cupped. I would love something more like Brother Cadfael, Eden, Heritage, etc in this area Nanadoll - how wide does BC get? I certainly have the height but prob have only about 3-4 feet for him in width Jeri - my BC plant is quite bushy, with a few blooms on side shoots and a good number of them at the tops of the shoots of varying lengths. I also tested the stiffness of the canes and they're not too stiff, I can still bend them pretty easy. I think easy enough for me to bend them sideways at least to help with flowering. Do you think although we're both in SoCal, since I'm down here in Venice and you're in the central coast it will behave differently?

Here are the top performers in my relatively new rose garden, so far: Pink Cracker M. Tillier Mutabilis John Paul II (on Fortuniana) Mr. Lincoln (on Fortuniana) Europeana (on Fortuniana) Le Pactole Duchess Du Brabant Caldwell's Pink Alister Stella Grey Teasing Georgia (on Fortuniana) I'm sure that this list will change next year, as my Vintage Gardens bands mature. Also, I really don't expect the ones grafted onto Fortuniana to live very long and I will not be purchasing any more grafted roses. Reason: Graft separation/failure, too many of them have died.

Hi Hidden, Welcome! I am in zone 6 in south central PA. Here Mary Roses seem very resistant as far as the pinks go. Beverly is too but her form is more traditional. Heritage is very David Austin in form and has a lovely scent. Here is something to consider though. I have planted the same roses in two locations on the property. One rose will get get black spot and one will not. Rather than blame it on the rose, I imagine it has to do with growing conditions like sun and airflow or the weather in general. Since BS and Powdery Mildew are the 2 banes of my roses I thought I would share this. I just re-watched Gardeners World season 2016 episode 22. Monty Don, my guru for organic gardening, mentioned that Powdery Mildew was caused by the plant being too dry. I had never considered that. So this year at the first sign of PM on my roses or clematis or honeysuckle, etc I am upping my watering frequency.

Mine are very different from one another. Now, just to make matters more confusing, there is some thought that Gartendirektor Otto Linne may be confused with Excellenz von Schubert in commerce. But it doesn't matter. Both are different from Cl. China Doll.

My GOT is a shrubby thing, like a polyantha, with very modern shiny foliage. Cl. China Doll has a climbing habit and very distinct form to the inflorescences, blooming in a raceme at the ends of the canes.

Gartendirektor Otto Linne may be confused with Excellenz von Schubert. Absolutely. I have them both and they are very very very very very. I think they might be the same. ;-)

We have grown both GOL and EvS, and still grow EvS.
They are really very different!

EvS in a cool climate is very much a poiple rose, and it is troubled by chlorosis in alkaline conditions. It can make a lovely climber in Southern California.

GOL was always pink here, and I don't recall particular problems with chlorosis -- but it wasn't nearly as successful a rose in my climate as EvS has been.

I'm on the border of zones 5 & 6 here. My GOL was a very strong plant, about 4 - 5 ft. high and 6 - 7 ft. wide. It did not weep or hang down in any way. While the canes often grew a little diagonally, they were very stiff and strong. I can't imagine Cl. China Doll being anywhere near that strong. Unfortunately my GOL suddenly died last summer for some unknown reason.
