Shrub id please

Can anyone help me out with what this shrub is? I can't seem to find anything that looks like it, although there is nothing uncommon in this abandoned garden. All azaleas and rhododendrons (Georgia). It's about 8' tall, 5' wide and looks like a barberry met up with a nadina. Stems are bamboo-ish like a nadina, berries are drop shaped like a barberry and it doesn't look like the birds have touched them, which is good. I won't have to go on a covert mission to get cuttings! Very attractive though. Thank you!

huh, I looked well off shoots or seedlings as I'm pretty invasive sensitive and I saw nothing. Don't ever say "English Ivy" to me, gives me night terrors. These shrubs have been on their own for at least six years. The bark is very smooth, wonder if it's a different cultivar of euonymus? Obviously I have never grown burning bush or I'd have a clue! If it is alata, it's good news that they don't seem to be spreading. It's not my property so I can't touch it, it was a curiosity when I was there for a different reason.

Thanks, one and all, especially iochroma. You hit it. Nice one. Carol. Further research does show that it is more similar to Macadamia than I thought/remembered. All Macadamia I saw in Australia were cultivated, so overall appearance did throw me. macranthos. The garden where this is, Morrab Gardens, is full of allsorts of plants, with many from Aus/NZ, and other places, eg Wollemia nobilis, Grevillias , Phyllocladus, Puyas, and a 30'+ Metasequoia. I pop down there every few months, and ALWAYS spot something I hadn't seen before. They did attempt, at one point, a couple of Banksia, but they expired. I suspect that they suffered from phosphorus toxidity. A pity as I love the Banksias. Temperatures, on average, are lows of 4C (39F), but -4C has been recorded. Many of their plants would NOT like that temperature, but being only 150m from the sea they probably wouldn't get that low.

I can’t say I’ve ever seen coronarius in nurseries around here. I’ll keep a lookout for some of the other species as well. I just checked my tag for madrensis, and it was grown by Cistus, though I wouldn’t put it past the far reaches research group to be the original collectors. I’ll try to grow some cuttings this year. It’s not the nicest looking shrub, like the other Philadelphus, but the fragrance is worth it if you have an out-of-the-way spot for it. Plus, it’s totally drought tolerant.

Yes, that's a Viburnum sp. Likely V. dentatum, but could be an ally like V recognitum. The shadier the site, the less likely this plant will be to flower well. When it does flower, it has broad flattened white blooms (cymose) which, when cross-pollinated, produce a handsome head of blue/black fruit. The species can have fall colors in the range of reds, burgundies, oranges, and yellows. There are quite a few named selections available from growers. It can be propagated very easily by layering (pin a branch to the ground and wait a growing season; the rooting will be prolific). Prune off such a rooted branch in late winter, and replant where you want the plant to grow. Arrowwood Viburnum will be a 8-12' tall and wide plant, so it needs a bit of room. Multiple seedling plants (or multiple different named clones which overlap in bloom time) will reward the gardener with scads of flowers, fruit, and fall color. The summer fruit-consuming birds will also love you bunches.

Stray ones pop up occasionally in Georgia thanks to seed distribution by birds. Not a problem like in the northeast, but it is of concern to those that watch for problem plants.

At this time it is considered category 4 in Georgia.

Thanks! Your list is better than the list I have, but looks like I only had cat 1. I don't see the need to plant anything that's invasive or potentially so - with so many Viburnum, hostas and helibores in the world I can stay pretty busy.
