Loropetalums and viburnum 'Chindo'

How hardy are they? Tags say Zone 7..and from descriptions of these plants I don't know why they aren't all over everywhere in Virginia. I haven't seen them like we see Leyland cypress.I've planted all of these as a screen, hoping now I haven't made a big mistake. Do you think I need to plant a back up?

Hi, My aunt from Dallas Texas came to visit when I was looking for evergreen foundation plants. She says they are the current rage in Dallas for carefree, gorgeous shrubs. I've had the one she bought me for a year now, here in Central VA. It is indeed beautiful, not growing too fast, spectacular flowers. I wouldn't plant a back-up as you will know soon if you like the loropetalum. I think my aunt sent me a magazine article about them, which I will locate and send you a little more info. Good luck. I'm concerned that one of our super nasty winters might kill them off, it's been fairly mild the last few...
They've taken the heat and drought well!

This plant may be somewhat susceptible to a couple of fungal or bacterial disorders. You might want to call your extension office to see if you can send some plant parts to a diagnostic lab for analysis. I'd not continue spraying until you have an idea of what the problem could be. Fungicides shouldn't be used unless you're pretty sure of the disease agent, and then only sparingly. I assume that you are well within this plant's hardiness range? Have you inspected along the trunks for any sign of bark splitting (freeze damage) or canker development?

This note can't tell you how they do in North Texas, but a few years ago, a friend and I both planted Chindo viburnums here in Austin and they did very poorly for us. Our neighborhoods are 20+ miles apart, different soil and she's on the south end of town, but we had the same experience. Our plants looked OK for a few years. They would make some growth in warmer weather, and look promising in fall, but every cold snap/ice event left them practically collapsed on the ground. The branches died back so severely that after 2 rough winters in a row, the viburnums were smaller than when they were first planted, and finally dead. I don't know if they'd like North Texas better!

Yeah Dave is right, cold damage causes cellular death which allows decay organisms to start growing. That's what you're seeing. Looks like the plants themselves will recover. Just let them be, no fertilizer, they don't need your "help". There was a huge Chindo at the University of Delaware that was cut back to a thick trunk after the prior winter...now all the regrowth is dead. I wonder if it will manage one last recovery... I wonder how the big ones in the Enid Haupt garden off the mall are doing.

Hello, I live in Durham, NC and I planted several chindo viburnum as a screen a couple of years ago and I love them. They are fast growing and nice looking shrubs and seem to be tough so far, heat, cold, and drought tolerant. I would like to plant some of these at my house on the North Carolina coast and I was wondering how salt tolerant they are? I've searched and searched and can't seem to find any good information on salt tolerance for them. I do know that they are native to the island of Chindo Korea which is an island off of the south coast of S. Korea, surrounded by the Yellow Sea so it would seem that they would be salt tolerant. Does anyone have actual experience with chindo viburnum in a coastal environment? Thanks, Dave

Probably they are not all over Virginia because they are not as appealing to the casually interested as Leyland, as well as being less hardy. Both the Loropetalum and the viburnum are likely to go back in a hard winter even in USDA 8.

It also depends on the cultivar of Loropetalum. The Monrovia selection/purple foliage Loropetalum couldn't even take a tough zone 8 winter for me, when other cultivars made it through pretty much unharmed. The Chindo Viburnum has been growing fine for me for about 5 years, with no damage in extended 15 degree spells. Tougher than I though it would be.

The serious trials are when it is 5F or -5F.
