Having another viburnum doesn't affect flowering, only cross-pollinating so that fruit is made. I've had mine since 2004 (purchased as 3 gallon plants) and they have not flowered. They are quite tall now (10-11 feet) and are in full sun. I am hopeful they will bloom this year; they have some significant terminal buds on them, and hopefully those are not just leaves! Anyway, the answer is that, as far as flowering, they will do it on their own.

And thanks so much for all the well wishes for success with this project!! lsst, the kudzu is a bad, evil thought joke on my part :-), my grandfather had it on his property and I remember as a child his constant battle to keep it from taking over his garden shed and keep it back out of his veggie garden. I hate that stuff and would never ever consider planting it. Needless to say, I need a LOT of trees. The developer next door decided to clear more lots yesterday and had the bull dozer running all day. I'm going with a layered hedge. The wider, the better for me. I'm going to put in a first line of White Pine. That is going to be my main line down the property line on his side. I've found a great deal on them from both SC Forestry and Arbor Day. I need to find my second "layer" and researching that now. Holly is quite interesting to me, and so is the pyracantha. Both I love. Economical is a key here, as I need so many to form this hedge. I'll be getting more into the magnolia, flowering Cherry, smaller hedge plants up closer to the house in my strategically placed bed areas. I want to define my actual "yard" area more and almost create an enclosed courtyard type of feeling with plants. But my first step is the LONG line of evergreen to block the majority of the view. lsst, I agree, why can't people just read the signs?? My property is posted, and one of the teenagers from the pit bull, yard chicken house has driven once and walked right past the 2 signs at my entrance to come uninvited to ask if I'll sell him one of my classic muscle cars. The first time, he was told no and asked to leave. The second time DH took him and showed him the No Trespassing signs and asked him to leave. One of the same group DH had to run off the back acreage. He seems to have no memory or sense of private property. When I was a child, both my Dad and Grandfather taught me that I was not to even cross a fence line that wasn't posted. And if posted, totally off limits! Both of them were avid outdoors men and even taught me that if I was out for a walk and came up on a pasture, to walk around the farmers fence. I guess that etiquette is now gone forever. Sad to see.

I purchased my 'Chindo' at the Home Depot Landscape store in Woodstock in late 2003 or early 2004. I think this comment generally applies to viburnum: In this species, the sexes aren't strictly separated, but individual plants are usually predominantly one way or the other, and planting different clones ensures cross pollination and better fruit set. I think as long as you have another viburnum that blooms at the same time, it will help. I had overlapping blooms on v. dentatum "Blue Muffin" and a maple leaf viburnum this year and they both set really good fruit (the maple leaf set fruit for the first time!). I planted 3 gallon size plants and they have not bloomed in the two years I've had them (in full sun). But in this case, I didn't buy them for the blooms, but for the screening capabilities.

Memorr, we had exactly the same situation 3 years ago. Now, our backyard is completely private. We created what we refer to as a 'living fence' with mixed borders. The depth of the border and the mix of trees and shrubs varies all around the yard. At one narrow area of the border (about 12' feet deep)we have Cryptomeria japonica (Japanese cedar) with fast growing Hydrangea paniculata 'Quickfire' in between. The Quickfires filled in the space while the cryptomerias were growing in. In another area we staggered Nellie R. Stevens hollies (Ilex x 'Nellie R. Stevens'). This portion is probably also 12' deep (it's raining or I would go out and measure). In front of a row of Viburnum awabuki 'Chindo' (we haven't had a problem with fungus here but it may be different in Florida) we have a 'grove' of 5 Natchez crepe myrtles (Lagerstroemia 'Natchez'). Two other privacy screens were created using Ligustrum japonicum which we keep pruned into a tight hedge. It took 2 years for them to row together. We keep them about 6 1/2 feet high. We need to prune several times a year. In front of one of these hedges, which is close to our patio, we have a row of 'Natchez' crepe myrtles again and a low hedge in front of those.. This made our patio feel very private immediately. The other hedge is an island in the yard in front of which we planted roses and other shrubs. It blocks a view to our neighbors' yard and added to the overall feeling of privacy while the outside 'fence' was growing in. We have been so happy with the results. We did have a landscaper plant the large trees - hollies, cryptomeria, crepe myrtles - because, like you, we didn't want to wait to get results. So, they were all at least 10' tall when they went in. They also planted the ligustrum hedges using shrubs that were about 4' tall. Best money we ever spent! We planted everything else. I will be happy to post some pictures if you're interested.
