Advice on some Austin roses

I am looking to add a few more Austins to my collection. I would like some comments on the following:

Anne Boleyn

Mary Magdalene

Rose Marie

Also, I see that Roses Unlimited has a Bourbon called -- "Mystic Beauty". -- Does anyone know anything about it?

I am interested in knowing the growth habit on these varieties (upright, or arching canes,etc), and the amount of bloom. I don't have a very large yard, so I try to grow the ones that do not get very big.

If any of you are growing any of these, please give me some info.

I have Mystic beauty but it's young. I've seen photos of it and love the color.

Suebelle, good to see you. I have Pat's version of Mystic Beauty. I notice some have said it is SDLM. It is a sport, if I make no mistake and perhaps theirs reverted to SDLM, but the one I have is bigger than SDLM, blooms more at one flush and flushes more frequently and in my case, got larger.

I have a David Austin rose called 'Heritage' that I have grown for more than ten years now without spraying with anything at all and it is beautiful. My entire yard and garden are grown organically. I think that whether a rose performs well (after making a good selection, which includes buying a rose that is growing on its own roots, not a grafted rose) it is more important to figure out how to prune the bush than anything else, if you are most concerned with having a solid show of beautiful roses throughout the season. I haven't mastered that skill yet, but 'Heritage' still gives me beautiful roses. Sometimes when I accidentally prune her just right, I am rewarded ten-fold. As an organic gardener, I have also learned this about aphids: You will most likely see some aphids in the spring on the young tender growth of your roses (and other plants). Leave them alone for awhile and don't fret. The aphids hatch out a little earlier than the ladybugs, and are the primary food for the ladybug nymphs. If you kill all the aphids, your ladybugs will have to look elsewhere for food, and you will be depriving your garden of an extremely beneficial predator. Learn to be patient and watch and wait. In just a few days the young ladybugs will come crawling for their first succulent meals, and they will clean up all the aphids. It's a wonder to see. Lesson #2 about ladybugs is that if you sweep your entire yard clean of leaves in the fall, they have nowhere to nest and lay their eggs. They like to lay eggs and raise their young under bushes in leaves and debris. Leave some habitat there for them.

David Austin himself recommends that several varieties be planted in groups of three plants to make a full bush. Others make a lush shrub on their own but don't ask me which of them. I grow only one Austin and Abraham Darby is a lush plant. I saw a huge planting of lollipops on sticks at the rosarium in Glucksburg, Germany, mostly older Austin varieties, looking no better than the average hybrid tea.

Not only beautiful roses, but beautiful pictures of roses! I'm most impressed with how well you captured the color for some that are extremely difficult to photograph such as Munstead Wood and especially Heathcliff. I love Heathcliff, but it's hard to photograph all of its different shades as it ages.

I was intrigued by Mystic Beauty when it scored so well in last years RIR so I looked it up on HMF. They state it's a sport but of Kronprinzessin Viktoria not SDLM........I grew Anne Bolyn years ago. I only had her for a little over a year in a container before I gave her away, so please take my comments with that limited experience in mind. I remember liking her blooms (color/form) which I found had a pleasant fragrance but she did have problems with B.S. I spray, but didn't want to take on another disease problem at the time. I can't really remember much more then that about her.

If you are interested in Mystic Beauty, which is a very pretty rose and gets quite large in Alabama, as it should in your garden, send Pat a note at rosesunlimited. I believe it was she who found the sport of Mystic Beauty from her rose collection and had it named. I am probably wrong based on Help Me Find but I basing on what I heard Pat say when touring her personal garden. Others can chime in who might recall that, because I admit, my hearing is not what it used to be.

patricia43, the introducer of Mystic Beauty, Bill Patterson, is or was Pat's partner at RU. I am not sure which of them first noticed it, but they are a team.

Basically MB is a reversion from KPViktoria to her sport-parent SDLM but with subtle differences from the original that many growers agree add up to an improvement. A truly great rose.

Thanks to all of you for your quick posting to my question. I think I am going to try Mystic Beauty. It sounds like an improved SDLM and I would love that. I guess I will pass on Rose Marie since there is no input. Since Rose Marie is a sport of Heritage, it probably gets a lil larger than I can handle. Still undecided on Anne Boleyn, but will take a chance on Mary Mag.
