Does Anyone Grow These Roses?

Hello:

I'm getting ready to do a rose order from Vintage and need some input. Does anyone out there grow Grand'mere Jenny, San Leandro Dark Red, Morgan Hill Red, Butterscotch(1942), Fort Knox, Eldorado, Mandarin, California, Ophelia and Amelia Earhart? Anything good or bad about these roses, any comments would be appreciated. Thanks. Summer_fashion

I have read that El Dorado does not have a fragrance. I am not sure if it matters to you though. I have a picture of it for my screen saver and it is a gorgeous yellow but no scent kills it for me.

I have grown Ophelia, with mixed results. The one I planted last year died over winter, but Mme Butterfly and Lady Sylvia survive in my garden setting. (They are sports of Ophelia.)

Ophelia has wonderful fragrance, and the blooms are lovely.

The Romanticas do well for me here on the So. Calif coast. I grow Jardins de Bagatelle, Peter Mayle, Yves Piaget, Eden, Comtesse de Provence, Johann Strauss, Jean Giono. I'd say most are pretty darned disease-free, except for Jardins de Bagatelle, which seems prone to rust. My Comtesse has issues with its blooms... they tend to fry quickly and sometimes smell slightly of vinegar. Odd, since it's next to Yves, who has long-lasting blooms. Yves will ball if it is rainy as it's opening. My Eden is on the north side of a six foot tall wood fence, conditions which should promote rust at certain times of the year, and it has never had rust (and I'm in rust central). I ditched Abbaye de Cluny a number of years ago b/c I thought it was a lesser version of Just Joey, which I like a lot better. The only one I gave away recently was Rouge Royale, for the reasons folks mentioned above. The person who I gave it to is happy with its occasional great blooms. John, I did not find Yves to be difficult to propagate... I made several cuttings of it a number of years ago. Romanticas are really just HTs. Susan

I grow ‘William Allen Richardson’ in San Marcos, Tx. It was a band sized plant from Vintage. The plant is now approx 6’ wide x 4.5’ tall- disease resistant, heat tolerant and a free bloomer. His blooms lighten up significantly in the strong Tx sun.

I've started a thread in the Adenium forum asking a few questions about desert rose. It‘s not a very active forum and it occured to me that with all the Floridians in this forum one of you might be growing desert rose and would be able to help answer my questions. I got BUTTERSCOTCH a couple yrs ago, and it still hasn't bloomed yet. Same with CALIFORNIA. I've has OPHELIA for many yrs, and she's quite lovely. She's struggled over the yrs, but I didn't used to fertilize hardly at all, and I just started doing it regularly last yr. She perked up like crazy and gave me some beautiful blooms. They do blow pretty fast tho. EL DORADO is probably the best of the batch. It's a lovely plant with nice big yellow and red-tipped blooms. I keep wanting to order AMELIA EARHART.

Ophelia is very tender and needs winter protection, same with Madame Butterfly. I lost mine but my neighbor 3 doors away has the Ophelia I gave her but she has grown hers in a pot.

Butterscotch, have had it for 3 years and it has never done much. It does not seem to like me.
