rose canes look strange......please help id problem???

My rose canes on one of my New Dawn look weird. Some of the new growth looks like it's wilted but not a lack of water looking wilt. Kind of just bending. I have 2 on an arbor and only one looks like this....any idea of what is wrong with it??? It looked so nice and healthy coming out and still looks really green. Makes me sooo mad...this is its 3rd year and I thought it was gonna really take off. Here is a couple of pics showing the stems...

It's possible that it's just trying to grow and get strong, but because of the cooler weather we've been having, it's not there yet. I'd leave it and see what happens.

I had 6 new canes coming out of my QE and now one of them is very droopy. Either the cold or something else got it.

could be light burn. If you have those lights on for warmth, you are probably also telling her that the days are longer and to start putting out new growth that is probably getting a little chilled. Just a guess, but then i have never seen lights strung on a rose, christmas tree yes.

Regarding the cane borers: They start at the cut cane: rose, grape, nine bark, etc. Whatever the cane, that is where they start. You prevent their entrance by sealing the cut end--this doesn't taste like fresh-cut wood! Lots of things will seal the ends of canes. I like white carpenter's glue, because it is easy to dispense and easy to clean up. However, I have a teflon-based fingernail polish in my tool belt that I have used very successfully to deter these critters! Regarding re-applying: If the glue was able to skin-over before the rains, it will remain and provide the protection. But if the rain washed it off, of course you will have to reapply. Related subject: We have always "followed the cane borer" down the cane. Cutting off the cane until we no longer had a hole. We have never used cane-borer killer sprays, although that is an interesting option. Our motto has always been to 1) prevent cane borers from finding a home and 2) cut them out, even if it was very low in the plant.

Goodness, my roses have red spots and silvery patches all over the place, especially fall through spring. Young canes turn various colors as they mature from green to brown or gray. These can start as red or purple spots and streaks, yellow flushes, etc. Purplish red spots and silvery patches can be from various nearly harmless fungi. Red spots can also be black spot infections of the bark that will carry the disease over winter, or the beginning of canker infections that will kill a patch of bark. It could be a reaction to sunlight. Don't be alarmed, however. You will probably never know exactly what these spots are, and chances are you will not notice any resulting problems. I just regard cane spotting as a normal thing in my climate and ignore it. If cankers appear in spring I will deal with them then.

thanks for the responses...looks like I'll have to shift Leander to somewhere more suitable. Should I try the same thing with the other two, or cut my losses, as they are quite large plants with thick bases, and thus probably have correspondingly large root systems (I tried shifting a rose that had been in the ground only 18 mths, and the roots went on forever, and even now it seems there must have been some root stock left behind, cos I keep getting shoots coming up)

It's a rose moss gall - caused by the larvae of a cynipid gall wasp. You can learn more by doing a search under either name. You can cut it out if it bothers you, but it really doesn't do any great harm to the plant. I used to get them now and then in my mature 10' tall Rosa glauca. Out of over 200 roses in that garden, that was the one that apparently was to the wasps' liking as I never saw them anywhere else. I never did anything about it and it caused no problem for me. But as Jim said, all the rose canes in your photo look dead and should be pruned out anyway. And the galls didn't kill those canes, btw.

thanks guys...the lights are actually along the fence and up in the top of the arbor for AMBIENCE not for warmth. Quite pretty when turned on....that is too funny. I'm sure hoping it will straighten itself out. Never saw it look that way before. April

Have the plants checked for verticillium (or other) wilts if you are pretty certain it is not environmental or pests.

Most areas have a plant disease clinic to which you can send your samples for testing.

In the meantime, practice the highest level of sanitation: keep your tools sharp and clean, and disinfect pruners (and other tools) between plants; don't work on the plants when they are wet; etc.
