Black Berry Shrub

Not sure what this is, but found it at my aunt's house in Rhode Island and was wondering if I could grow it from seed. Also an ID might help so I know what I actually have! Thanks

It's a Ligustrum ie a Privet. Check its invasive status in your region before growing. Extremely easy from cuttings if you decide it is an acceptable choice for your area.

Oh, you can grow it from seed. In your yard, your neighbor's yard, your neighbor's neighbor's yard and so on. Check it out before proceeding.

HAVE: Seeds from heirloom 6' tall bush w/ lovely, shiny, small green leaves. In Spring, it gets tiny pink/white flowers shaped like teacups. And in Autumn, it has purplish-blue berries. As I am unable to identify the bush, I believe them to be NON-EDIBLE. The leaves turn a lovely shade of pinky-peachy-gold in Autumn. The two have such different growth habits that I don't think it would work. Heritage is low and bushy, the blacks are rangy until you prune them in winter. Also Heritage stays put while the Blacks "walk" where they want to go. I think the blacks are iffy for you anyway because of scant winter chilling. I've seen Heritage grown very successfully on the Gulf Coast, using only organic methods. Here is a link that might be useful: various raspberries and quirks

I think it may be Black Chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa). A closer photo of the leaves, bark, and berries would make a positive ID more easy. If it is Common Buckthorn, I feel sorry for the bunny who ate it!

Yes, that's what it looks like. Dioecious, only the female plants will produce berries. Highly invasive and on the prohibited plant list here in Mass. The wood is orangey, and very hard!

Yes, and the birds will help by eating the seeds and spreading them around. You can have a privet lawn if you want (some of my flower beds look like that before I weed them). They are sometimes planted as hedges around here, but the neighbors disapprove for obvious reasons. My FIL used to say the word "privet!" in a tone of voice that made it quite clear that he did not like them...

The flowers of privets produce a heavy odor that I don't care for myself - you might not like it either.
