hfgh 8x6 greenhouse questions

Hey Folks, been reading and searching this forum for a while and have learned tons of info. What a great site! Just wanted to ask a few questions though.

1)I'm thinking of buying the 8x6 HFGH, at $299.00 what a great price. But I'm hoping to get a 20% off coupon before they go off sale on 4/12/2006. How long does it take them to start sending coupons once you sign up on their website.

2) After seeing another post here, I'm thinking of setting two courses of cement blocks and attaching the GH on top of them. The floor would be pea gravel with a drain underneath it. I would be using it for a few citrus plants I have. In the summer, I was thinking of taking the top panels out and just having the side panels for wind protection of the plants during the summer. Is this feasible. I live on a mountainside and it can get very windy. With the top panels out, will the GH still be sturdy? Or would it be better to get a shade net and leave the panels in. Here in NC it gets above 90 F alot during the summer. What major problems could I have with leaving the panels out during the summer.

3) Has anyone used the HF auto vent opener. Saw one negative post, has anyone else had experience with it. Also has anyone had experience with a juliana vent opener.

I can speak to taking panels out, but not on a windy mountain....

I have taken one of the top corner panels off, but I also have a shadecloth which acts as a net, if you will. It seems pretty sturdy with one out. I couldn't say about taking them all. It'd be worth trying though.

I got the Baylis XL opener, and it works great.

I have two of the HF Vent openers on order.(I am going to need at least five vent openers because venting heat daily is the most important factor for me) For the price I figured I had to try em, but if they do not work well, I did not want to order all of them at once. Although I probably won't have them installed before you order your greenhouse, I will be testing them (max extension, and lifting force) as soon as I get them, to determine if I will order more of them.

I have one in my HFGH. My house is set up for starting bedding plants so I have shelves along each side so it doesn't get in the way for me. You can see my original installation in the pictures I posted a few weeks ago in the thread about my construction and north wall insulation here http://forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/load/strucs/msg121339449284.html?8 I had problems getting it adjusted so that it would open and close at a higher temp so I have since added an aluminum angle, attached a redwood 2x4 block to the aluminum angle and attached the univent to it. It works much better that way. I'll try to take a picture and post it this weekend.

Yes, It definetly helps. I am currently using this method, without it every thing inside froze with ice all over it. Since I put up the plastic sheeting nothing freezes anymore.Just make sure that the plastic doesn't lay against the windows or the corrugated glazing or it will suck the heat out of the greenhouse. The bigger the air cushion the better the insulation. Even the windows don't freeze over like they did before.The nighttime temps are about 15 degrees warmer than without plastic. That plus a small electric heater and you've got yourself a heated greenhouse. To go one step farther channel the heat to access two small tabletop greenhouses inside and the temps can stay around 78 to 80 degrees all night long even on bitter cold winter nights. I use two cornhole boards turned upside down and let the heat come up through the holes to heat the small greenhouses Perfect for propagating or seed starting, and it works great. My greenhouse is 10'x 16' with 12' height. Plastic drop clothes on walls and ceiling, wooden door insulated sheeting. Space between plastic and walls is about 3 1/2 inches. I have yet to insulate the floor but that is next springs project. I have many small veggies that I have started from seed and all are doing well. Good Luck.

I'm quite certain you can rig a fan up there so long as the extention does not conflict with any bracing you installed (such as the 1/2" rigid conduit that I and others used to brace the walls.) The timbers that form the footing of the GH are 2x12 pressure treated fir. I did that a year ago when I started this project, but today I would have used the same rough cedar which I discovered later that summer at a local mill. I used the same PT fir for the outside steps and cedar for the interior steps. The steps make access to the GH a lot more convenient and being in snow country it allowed the base of the GH to be largely above the level of the typical snowfall here. This is our first season growing in the GH but it's mid-July and we just recently pulled out the lettuce and spinach that had gone to seed. A new lettuce crop (seeds)is in the newly built 3rd box - time will tell how that goes. It gets awfully hot in there though. As for weight, someone else might answer that. I strapped the various shelves to the sides and have seen no problem from the weight of the starting trays. However, I plan to replace the shelves (right now we are using the wire closet organizer shelves) with the style that Cactusfreak features in his HFGH photos. I want the additional space they will provide as well as to have them supported by pipes mounted above the raised bed boxes.

We have quail, but they don't bother my succulents; my mortal enemies are Thrashers, birds with long beaks and brash attitudes! They flip dirt aside to find bugs, stabbing through leaves. In two minutes they permanently disfigured succulents I'd babied for years. Some of my plants looked like they'd been stabbed to death with ice picks! My HFGH has solved that problem completely. All of the panels are removable, as long as you don't caulk them in place. I believe you'll need to secure them with screws and extra clips to keep the panels in place. As jumpin4joy mentioned, the panels can come loose in strong winds, and that can be disastrous. My blog has pics of how we modified our HFGH to make sure it would withstand high winds (got all the good ideas here from Gardenweb folks!) Building our 10x12 HFGH I remove four of my south wall panels every summer and replace them with screens I made out of Aluminet shade cloth. You could also make screens using regular window screen material. Here's an old thread showing what my screens look like. I love them. Aluminet Screens for Harbor Freight Greenhouse I also keep the doors open, so I made a curtain of Aluminet shadecloth to hang in the doorway. Slides on shower curtain hooks, and clips to the doorway edges with little clamps like clothespins. Not sure it would keep nosy quail out (it's still loose at the bottom) but my Thrashers haven't stomped in there, so far! Now I can enjoy their song, instead of wishing they were dead. ;-)

Does anyone know how long this greenhouse will be on sale? Also, how do you get a coupon. I signed up for emails, but never get a coupon!

I don't want to burst your bubble, and I hope I'm wrong, but the HF coupon I get via e-mail always has a message "Coupon cannot be used with any other discount or coupon." Has anyone else any experience trying to use the 20% coupon with a discount that could advise?

Yes, I got the 6 x 8 with the discount and the coupon. They are pretty easy going about it, in fact I have gotten the 20% off by just mentioning I forgot my coupon.

Also, if you buy it without the coupon but take the receipt and coupon back they will refund the difference.

I have found the people in HF stores have no problems giving discounts.

OK...but does anyone know how long it will be on sale for? And what about that coupon? I did sign up at the HF USA site...
