Isn't it just typical?

Well..My MIP has finished her first flush and the weather is cool (for us) sooo..perfect time major cut back. Going from 12 x 12 to about 4. I did half of her on Tuesday and planned to finish yesterday. Unbeknown to me, my pup had other plans. The darling sweetheart left her favorite toy at the base of the steps of my porch. She wanted to share. Well, my foot found toy but my eyes didnt and down I went. Spent the rest of the day waiting around in the ER with DH cracking jokes and fortunately making me laugh. So I now have a fiberglass splint on my ankle and am on crutches. And MIP is half huge and half normal sized. By the time I'm in working order it will be hot again. How typical LOL.

Oh dear! So you've got a cast and a lopsided rose. Oh well. Maybe you could 'stupervize' DH and have him prune it.

Easy, sit on the porch and using a pointer show the wonderful DH where to make the cut while sipping tea. Or you could tell him to make the tall side look like the shorter side.

Check the pH first of all, especially if nothing is growing in it. It sounds like you could use a clay amendment, but buying clay is something people rarely have to do so it's availability is limited in most areas. You might be able to dig some up in your yard under existing topsoil.

Most interesting! Makes me wonder if the Crayfish living in most of the ground on this property (apparently, they're some sort of subspecies not requiring actual streams) aren't helping with the colors of my blooms. But the cooking may be a key component of what you're doing. The newly-'discovered' Terra Preta. which is remarkably stable - even regenerating over time - has its origins in the refuse piles left by the people of the Amazon. Charcoal, cooked food scraps, bones, pottery shards... I've toyed with the idea of asking to buy any scraps of bisque (first, low temperature firing) from local potteries, to mix in with my compost. Experiments in recreating Terra Preta indicate that "charging" the pottery shards, by steeping them for months in compost, is part of the secret to the longevity of the man-made soil. We're vegetarians (and I don't think Shellfish are allowed in our diet - plus I may have severe allergies to them, anyway...), but I'm going to start asking the neighbors' maids to save shrimp scraps for us. We already are getting the coffee grounds, banana peels, chicken bones and eggshells (and a reputation for being eccentric).

Yes, mostly E. elegans, with a couple of others mixed in. Even here it isn't foolproof; the near continuous 3 weeks of constant rains we had back in March rotted a lot of succulents here, especially Graptoveria's, and you have to be diligent about picking off rotten leaves or any with fungal infections when planting this densely, as well as not letting fallen leaves collect upon them. Echeveria imbricata is also a lot more sensitive to too much rain, and they all mostly look like c--p this spring. A year round gardening climate means year round gardening work!

Beautiful ocean view and I wouldn't want to lose it. How about just a low picket fence to divide the pit area from the lawn area and block you and guests from direct view of each other? You'd still have your ocean view. The same kind of fence could extend out from the shed and hide the mechanicals. With a gate it could serve as a stash spot for the kettle grill and any accessories not in use. I love the look of Adirondack chairs but they are too low and angled for many people to get in and out of. Your current chairs are a nice blue, but I find that all of your seating everywhere is metal and leggy. Not really a good look and making for a cluttered feeling. Too bad the storage building is a bit shorter than the one opposite it. Would have made a nice connector for a pergola to span the entire area from the bar across.

I agree with Lance. Point out to the hubby where to cut. I am soooooo sorry you had a tumble leaving you with a bad boo-boo!!!! Hope you heal up fast!!

Oh, Mari, sorry to hear you'll be laid up this spring. I'm sure though that you'll find the plus side of it, and I hope you get to see a whole new side of your roses and garden - from the patio. Hmmm. What will you ponder?

Thanks all..DH says he will prune the rest of MIP with one swipe to the base LOL. I think I'll just have a lopsided plant for abit :)

Mari, you sound like me. Friday night, I slammed my left foot into the base of the couch....ouch! scream! cuss!

THEN, I got up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom and slammed my left foot again, but this time, into the ottoman...brought tears to my eyes. Well, here I sit with 2 broken toes and 1 fractured toe. Man they are sore! And like you, I had rose work to get done this weekend...oh well. Take care of yourself and take it easy!

Hope it heals quickly and you can get your revenge on MIP by making her short, short, shorter. We cut ours back to (Egads) 18 inches and she is loaded with buds, no bloom yet --- but even my flowering quince was late blooming this year and God Forbid, my English dogwoods have bloomed before the roses which is bassackwards.
