Ok, my directive was to fetch the newspaper, but I "accidentally" found myself taking the long way thru the woods--how does that happen ;-) --when I stumbled upon this intriguing plant with the mottled leaves. I have no idea what it is--do you? The leaves are quite leathery, almost succulent. The closest thing I could think of was a trout lily, Erythronium americanum, but I'm not comfortable with that. Found growing in rich woods, Zone 7, Virginia, in the piedmont on the site of an 1800's homestead, now in ruins.
