Thanks, everyone! This plant has been a mystery to me since we moved to this spot 4 years ago. It appears to love this side of the mountain (east side) and is growing in 3 ft diameter clumps with a very prolific show of flowers. Quite the display for spring! I just wish it would last a bit longer in the season. Cindy

Or take a look at Wisteria. That's the only one I can think of that might grow straight up 5' without something to support it, and even that seems unlikely. It does have speckled stems. How thick are the thickest stems? Could it have started out growing around a small tree or something that has since died? Keep an eye on it for flowers or fruit/pods/seeds - like hortster says, without a picture that description fits an awfully lot of plants. Just looks like the normal Dutch version. Mine have seeded out, too. You may be near an old home place. The wild hyacinth you are thinking of, I believe, is Camassia scilloides, which is much taller. However, you are finding goodies in your part of the world, so you should report this if you think it is the Camassia. It is indeed on the threatened list in NC.
