Question on Store Bought Perennials

When you purchase a perennial from your local garden center or say Home Depots, Lowes, etc., are they considered first year perennials? Will they bloom that summer or not until the following year? Does anyone know?

I purchased a Lupine that other day from Home Depot and was told that it was actually the 2nd year for that plant, even though it was kind of small, about 7-8 inches tall and a few inches wide with no flowers. Are they correct in telling me that it's a second year plant?

Someone may correct me, but I believe if they are grown by seed they will not bloom until the second year, but if by cutting they will bloom the first year. If the plant is small you may want to pot them in a one gallon container and nurse it along and then plant in the garden in the fall.

Linda - It's really hard to say what they are selling, because they could be buying in Lupines that have been vernalized, and it's really hard to tell just by looking at the plant if it is small because of it's age, or because it is coming out of dormancy. I wouldn't expect it to be in bloom yet - the natural bloom time is early summer. At any rate, there ARE cultivars of Lupines that bloom first year from seed - most notably the "Gallery" series.

Dchall, About the peat moss - if it is dry - it is hard to soak it through. When it is wet - it is holds too much water. But if you let the rootball dry - it again shrinks significantly into this cardboard like thing - if you just water it from the top - the water runs down on the sides and doesn't penetrate the middle. To rewet it again - you need to submerse the pot and let it sit in water for half an hour. No surprise that these procedures are very harmful to the tender hair roots of the AV - and afterwards some of them die. That is another pitfall of this sludge type soil and it works against our hypothetical average WM shopper who probably alternates the drought and flood in his plants treatment. Better quality soil gives you some leeway - and you can keep it on a dry side to knock the gnats down without endangering your plants. Just put some wet peat in a pot, let it dry - and you will agree with Nancy. Irina the Walmart Shopper ( I get the tubes and fixtures and timers etc there)

Prairiemoon, I decided not to make more comments on delphiniums. There will always be somebody new, who will drag it forward again anyway, so there is no sense in it. Second language??? English is actually my fourth language and I'm selftaught. Nevertheless it was assessed to be good enough to appoint me to be a global moderator on an US-based international forum in another branch. And let me tell you: although the Americans are in minority there, it is the most offended group of all (Australians runner-up). Nothing is too small to feel offended about,it seems like they love to feel offended. Nothing is too small to cause a stir. No opportunity is missed to feel offended, no matter how small, it's like they are fault finders or something.They try to find something that is not there. And then they use half an hour to tell each other what they actually meant and what they did not mean. Nobody else does it. The Dutch ones do not even have a word for sorry. So no, you are not right even on this account, either. And they remember being offended like elephants: til the day they die. As far as the Kevin's attack on me is concerned: it surprises me that you cannot see that it was totally unfounded and out of place. You seem to only notice "my sins". A hybrid can make viable seed. Sometimes hybrids are sterile, not often, but sometimes. If a hybrid's seed are viable, the babies they produce will not be the same as the parent. How different depends on how much variation is in the lineage of the hybrid. I found a great link with a photo of a viable Fuchsia seed. They seem to be like hard round black balls. Another issue, especially with winter shipped in tomatoes, is that it's common to pick the tomatoes at the mature green stage and then gas them with ethylene gas which initiates a ripening process, but in doing that it's mainly a color change and any inherent taste has little or no time to develop since the fruits are off the vine and can't synthesize any/few of the about 400 organic compounds that have been IDed as being associated with taste, but not yet isolated as specific organic compounds. Just blips on a gas chromotography display. If you Google this issue you'll see that some varieties are more gassable, if that's a word, so those are the ones most used by large commercial operations that do gas fruits. Fruits produce their own ethylene gas which initiates a ripening sequence in the normal course of events, so artificially gassing them, while it's not natural, is one way of coloring them up. Carolyn

I thought the actual issue is whether it's first, second, etc. year after PLANTING, not in the pot - ?.

Even a more mature plant may not bloom well (sometimes not at all) its first year in the ground.

When I tell someone the age of my plants, I always count from when I planted it no matter how old it may have been from the nursery. I'm sure the trees I've bought weren't in their first year when I bought them, but I call it their first year in the ground.

As for whether the lupine will bloom, I bought two potted ones at a nice nursery near me. One of them bloomed that first year but the other one didn't. They were fairly small when I bought them. So based on my experience you have a 50/50 chance.
