oleander's toxicity

The other day I purchased 10 oleanders, they were reduced to clear and I had what I thought was the ideal place for them in open space out front and down the side of my property.

As I was outside planting them one of my neighbors stopped for a chat and said how beautiful oleanders get then asked if I was aware that they are toxic ( we have young children and our front is somewhat of a playground for the local children). I looked at the tag that came with the plants which said nothing about this so checked the Internet. Depending on which site I read these plants are anything from deadly to causing irritation.

I returned the plants just in case, I have trouble getting my children to eat salad so I doubt they would eat anything off a plant, but I thought even the smallest chance is not worth it.

Ok sorry for the long intro, my question in the desire for knowledge is-

Are these plants that deadly or is there a lot of hype?

Thanks for taking the time to read.
