Hi Pam. I just posted a reply to your question on home decorating and here you are again. LOL I'm the one whose son keeps his sheets on his bed all year at his college dorm. At home here, we wash about once a week. I think it can depend on if you bathe in the morning or evening. My previous husband never bathed until morning and I had to wash every 3 days or so because I couldn't stand the smell.

Since this is OT, years ago(in the 40's) before the fitted sheets I lived with my grandparents for awhile, beds were made immediately upon rising except for Mondays, wash day. The bottom sheet was stripped off and washed the top sheet was then the bottom sheet for the next week, I guess this was done so they would wear evenly. What use to puzzle me I couldn't for the life of me understand why I had to make my bed as soon as I got up when all the beds were turned down to air at about 10 in the morning for an hour and then had to be remade. Also I might add the sheets were made of linen and had to be ironed, plus they were damn cold to get into, no central heating. When it was really cold we had a bed-warming pan that we filled with hot coals from the fireplace which was used to warm the sheets in the dead of winter. Now to answer your question, it's once a week around here.

I laughed SO hard at your reply... loved it. I have to confess that my son has also gone at 6 months and his room always smells clean.

Sheets that are still on the bed after a week just don't seem to bother me, but I'll eventually wash them after 2 out of guilt, lol.

Shouldn't it depend, in considerable part, upon your location? [Here you can tie into the USDA hardiness zones gardeners bander about and not be too far off topic. vbg.] For example when in Arizona in an old house with evaporative cooling I washed my bedding often. When on the tundra in Western Alaska I slept in my clothing in a goose down sleeping bag under a down comforter and never washed the sheets. So I should think that zone 5b in winter might be much different than zone 8 in summer.

Once a week or more often as required. Funny topic!

LOL Albert, you're right. In the summer I do wash mine more than in the winter, hot sweaty bods versus cold dry chapped ones... although our snow shovelling has made us perspire ever so much this year!

LOL, this is too funny! I actually saw this thread last night before anyone answered, but I didn't want to be the first one to answer! I'm still not sure I want to admit to anything in public....

But, since you said two weeks, Pam, I don't feel so bad, lol. I do think about doing it once a week, but gosh darn, before you know it, a week's gone by and I just don't have time to do laundry! With my crazy schedule, it's more important to have clean underwear available than clean sheets, lol.

Yesterday I was running around the house with one shoe on and one bare foot, desperately trying to find a clean black sock to wear to work and I was already running 15 minutes late. Socks, I need. Sheets can wait!

Well, this is a strange topic for any forum so why am I compelled to answer? Will I regret it? I change the sheets every Saturday when the family are home to help.

When the kids were little, I told them that they needed a ticket to watch the Saturday morning cartoons. The ticket was their sheets and towels and laundry baskets. And the TV didn't go on til EVERYONE had brought their stuff downstairs. Lots of peer pressure going on but good habits were instilled, so I thought.

They left my home with those good laundry habits. Pride goeth before a fall, however. I had the exact same experience as others have posted. Dropping our older son at college, weeping profusely, I made his dorm bed with the brand-new sheets I had so carefully chosen. Oh, the agony of parting. When we picked him up in May at the end of the school year, he informed me that not only had he never made his bed since I had in September, he had never washed the sheets even once. Gag.

Once a week!! Ever see an article that come from the creepy crawlies from your skin etc.? Thats enough for me.

LOL, Triciami, yes! I think they show those dust mites magnified a thousand times, and they are u-g-l-y!!

Hmm, I think I'm going to go wash my sheets before I go to bed tonight, lol!

Ginny, I am so glad someone else's son did the same thing. I bought new sheets too, made the bed up, and come May he brought them home and wadded them up in the corner of his room for the summer. Come August he informed me he'd made his bed every day at school, but he too, never once washed the sheets. I quickly washed them up with lots of hot water and clorox before he went off for another year of doing the same thing.

While I'm reading these posts, I keep thinking I'm on the wrong forum. LOL! Dee, if I saw this before anyone else posted, I wouldn't have answered first either. But now after reading this, I'm ready to admit I wash my sheets every 2 wks. The pillow cases I wash every week.
Yup, I've seen pics of those little mites that are on everyone and everything. Well, I've lived with them this long, I guess I can continue. :)

I wash them about once a month, but I will investigate whether those mites you are talking about are harmful. Also, if clothes look or smell dirty I wash them. Otherwise I wear them over again. I don't like to waste energy. Most of my 9 year old son's clothes are worn only once before washing. I can't stand that moldy smell of wet-too-long towels etc. I use bleach for those or soak clothes in vinegar.

We all had the same son! However, now that ours is a daddy, he is unbelievable. Asked me the other day how often I disinfect our phone!

Pillowcases once a week here. Sheets....every couple of weeks. Maybe once a week during humid weather.

However, I still remember as the oldest of six kids being the one who had to iron all the sheets, which were washed every Saturday, no matter what. We did have one of those weird mangle (sp?) machines, where you "fed" in the sheets, napkins, pillowcases, etc., (and curtains that weren't "stretched" on contraptions that had pins all around the perimeter)....

And to think that sometimes I actually long for the old days (LOL).
