Wooden Tool Handles - Care

I'm cleaning, sanding and refinishing my wooden garden tool handles this winter. Most of them are Ash, and they're in really bad shape.

After I scrub off the dirt and sweat, and sand them smooth, what should I refinish them with? My traditional first choice would probably be Linseed/Turps, 50/50.

Any better choices? They sit out in the salt air pretty much all year, and I want them to be protected, and to look good.

I'm also thinking about staining them a bit darker, so they'll all be more uniform in color.

What's your favorite recipe for wooden handles?
