It could possibly be Mermaid. When I saw the bloom, the first thing I wondered was if it had thorns.

Mermaid is beautiful, and like so many beauties, very dangerous. She is loaded with very sharp thorns. There have many threads about growing Mermaid as a fence to keep out invaders and around young daughters bedroom windows.

I've been to the cemetery on the Easter day, lots of roses there... I am planning another trip there sometime in May.

I think I could probably get back to approximately where Mama grows. Whenever I'm there, I always get so turned around. It's over in a row with Safrano and Louis Philippe, away from the road a bit, behind a few rows of tombstones . . . now THAT's helpful, isn't it. LOL

Looks to me like Sunsprite.

The baby has 5 single petals, wicked thorns, and the area you describe has Mermaid growing in it. Is this the area that would be to the left from the Presidents circle? (standing with your back to the circle) There was a Mermaid over there with huge canes that had been trimmed back almost beyond recognition- like someone smooshed it up against a wall. The grounds keepers can be pretty brutal, but that is a rose that can dish it out as well as take the abuse. In other words, I don't blame them for cutting it back. If not Mermaid, then I would say a Hybrid Tea from the 60'-70's (wild guess about the time frame). Way to go with the seed propagation!

It looks somewhat like a pernetianna that I have and I am trying to remember the name. I wish old age did not give me that CRS disease.

It looks as if Mermaid was the Daddy for at least one of your seedlings. I'd know those bracteata-origin thorns anywhere.
As to the Momma's real name....there's a rose over n Asheville that looked that good, also last year in spite of it not being a great rose year. Let me see if I can find some reference.

Bracteata thorns, you think? This is so cool! The baby in the photo above is the second one from this hip to bloom -- the first one was also a single yellow, but I accidently damaged the bud while I was squishing aphids and it didn't open very well. (I'm spraying the aphid invasion in the basement with Safer soap now since this happened.)

I'm having so much fun with seedlings! Most of my seeds were planted in January, after 60 - 90 days in baggies in the fridge, and I've been getting germinations since shortly thereafter. A few of the ones from a Dr. W. Van Fleet hip show real promise. One of the early ones is already over 9" high, climbing for the sky, with beautiful dark green foliage. It shows no sign of buds, however, and I may not see any till next year since its Daddy is a once-bloomer. I also have babies from Souvenir du Dr. Jamain, Jeanne Lajoie, Old Blush, Blossomtime, and an unknown HT from the winery next door. Some of them sprout and take off and thrive, while others just sit there and vegetate. A few have germinated and then died outright. The whole process is facinating.

Congratulations on your seedling. I spent a bit of time over the weekend separating my seedlings into their new containers. I don't have any that are showing signs of buds, but I do have some that are showing thorns!

Will all the seedlings that come from the same hip be identical to eachother? What is the likelihood of open-pollinated seeds being the same as the mother plant (I hope not too likely).

And, Olga, if you happen to see this, I have one Canary Bird seedling from the seeds you've sent me. I hope it keeps doing well.

Robert, I think I may have planted my seeds earlier than you did. That's why I have a few buds before you do.

I would imagine that the characteristics of each hip-mate seedling would be a lot like what occurs in the average human family -- some offspring resemble one parent or the other, and some can be a combination of more recessive traits and are a bit different. (My own daughters are an example of this: DDs #1 and #3 have brown hair and brown eyes, just like DH and I do -- DD #2 is a green-eyed blonde.) It's this combination of traits that humans hope to exploit in hybridizing, to produce new roses with the most desireable aspects of each parent rose.

Self-pollinated seeds, unless the parent is a species rose, will be different in some respect from the parent -- all those genes from various ancestors expressing themselves in endless combinations as pollen meets ovules. It all depends on a statistical distribution of dominant vs. recessive characteristics.

Based on what has been said here, my Hollywood Yellow seedlings appear not to have been self-pollinated -- and I'm thrilled. I guess one never knows where that bee has been before he gets to your rose to do his thing. I have read many a hybridizing discussion where little value is placed on the likelihood of anything significant coming from time spent germinating and growing open-pollinated seedlings. I accepted this chance when I put all my seeds in the 'fridge in the fall. We know that I'm not going to find the next great rose growing in my basement grow room, but I'm sure having a good time learning about the process. . . . and I have found that roses in the basement in winter, both seedlings and cuttings, are a great way to pass the time until spring.

No.
First, the ovules in the hip are all from the female and there's usually variability just in the ovule.
But the way fertilization happens is that individual grains of pollen land on the stigma and grow (from one of the pollen's two nuclei) a pollen tube down the style into the ovary. Then, down each pollen tube, the second nucleus (each from a separate grain of pollen) moves down and to each ovule.
Is all pollen from a rose identical...no because of the way the pollen is made, some traits are dominant and some recessive and sometimes the dominant genes show up in pollen, and sometimes the recessive.
(And for a real hoot, there are supposedly homogeneous roses like R. canina and other species which have different polyploidy and.....there's lots of research right now being published trying to understand the variability within one species in Europe. Google scholar R. canina genetics just to read abstracts.)

I was thinking that it looks a good bit like 'Autumn Sunset' (sport of 'Westerland'), which is a pretty good seed setter.

I would agree that it is definitely not Mermaid and it doesn't look like Sunsprite either....the bloom does look a bit like Autumn Sunset, but then it should be a climber.Was the parent plant a bush?

Many modern climbers are shrubby and stiff, especially grown without support, and 'Autumn Sunset' is no exception - so that wouldn't necessarily be the way I'd rule it out.

Wow Connie, I am impressed! Whatever it is, it is beautiful - but as you may remember, I am a sucker for yellow roses.

The coloring at first reminded me of Soleil d'Or...but not enough petals. Aha: the bloom form and foliage reminds me of Maigold. It's a once-bloomer with a long bloom period.

With the 1986 date of introduction, I doubt Mama is Autumn Sunset, though the blooms look similar. Mama is a bush for sure, not a climber. There are also similarities to the HMF photos of Maigold . . . don't think this is it either, since Maigold is a once-bloomer. Even with a LONG bloom season, would there be a good crop of blooms and buds in October?

I had a brainstorm and checked out photos of Lady Hillingdon. I've never seen this rose in person, but the photos and descriptions make it look like a possibility.

I'm just gonna have to get to Richmond in the next couple of weeks to pin-point Mama's exact location, and maybe get a few photos of the bush. (and see if she's in the vicinity of the Mermaid that jbcarr mentioned) If we know exactly where Mama is, it should be fairly easy to find out who she is.

My Maigold has very little rebloom, altho I've never given it any help, either - - I don't fertilize it or deadhead. Most of my shots are dated in April. A couple of the HMF references (including the grand old man himself, Graham Stuart Thomas) mention scattered bloom later in the season. If it is Maigold, it's easy to ID by the scent. It has plenty of that linseed oil scent. Some people love the notes that scent gives to roses, but I can't seem to smell anything past the linseed oil. Interesting that a number of the HMF references describe it as good scent. I'd say it's distinctive. Good...not so much. The foliage is shiny and very healthy. And the canes are wickedly thorny. My plant is already in bloom, and it will bloom into June. Oh, I just found one of my photos dated late August. So I guess it does have scattered rebloom, onsie twosies. October, tho...I just don't know. The bloom color is very subtle and beautiful, I think, with a reddish wash over deep yellow, great veins of color, fading clear yellow. The effect is of apricot from a distance.
