Recommendation for long blooming perennials for Dallas

I am a newbie to Gardening and I am planning to start with some long blooming perennials for my front and backyard. Backyard is south facing so gets plenty of sun through out the day. Front yard is mostly shady.

Any recommendations from experts on the best long blooming perennials for Dallas (Zone 7 ??).

i would start at the local nursery.. with a pencil and notepad.. and take notes on what strikes you ... and buy a few.. and stick them in the ground. . thats how you start gardening ...

once you have a list.. i am sure we can offer many opinions on whatever you want to know ...

otherwise.. the list you ask for could be thousands of plants ...

the reason i said nursery.. rather that BIGBOXSTORE ... is because.. presumably.. those folks have been in your area for years.. and they know what will grow .. and what will be easy ...

if makes no sense.. for me up herein MI to list a multitude of plants.. that simply wont do much for you down there ...

go figure.. there is a TEXAS forum.. who knew.. lol ... you might want to check over there .... but do come back ...

For the full sun area I have 2 favorites that are really easy to grow and you will love, they constantly bloom all summer long til the fall.
Petunias, they come in all colors and
Verbena, they come in all colors
you can find them anywhere, they are inexpensive and if you mulch the petunias rel good in the fall, you will have them
again next year. pETUNIAS also seed all over, and you will see them coming up in different places, blooming!
Well, they are 2 easy beautiful ones, and if you like hughe flowers and don't mind watering almost every day, you can buy a Canna. It loves sun, mulch and watering every day in the hot summer months, and boy are they gorgeous!
Just don't forget to mulch real good.

Thanks Nancy! By the way, a number of the seeds you sent me in our trade have now germinated. :) (I winter sowed them.) Achillea 'Cloth of Gold', Baptisia 'Screamin Yellow', Verbena bonariensis and Eryngium are all up. In fact I transplanted the Achillea 'Cloth of Gold' out into the ground yesterday and now we're getting a nice soft cool rain to soak the seedlings in. I think I'll plant some of the Baptisisia 'Screamin Yellow' into the pictured front bed where there is a nice clump of purple Baptisia australis already established.

I have had great luck with: Galliardia - the burgundy is drop dead gorgeous, although I have grown the red and gold as well. Plant someplace it can "spill" over in the direction of the sun. Constant bloomer. Victoria Salvia - this is constant blooming, as opposed to May Night, which grows larger and blooms in waves. Any butterfly bush - there are some new smaller varieties -3-5 feet that fit better in a small garden. Coreopsis, love Limerock Ruby, just be aware you will need to shear the plant after bloom to keep the blooms coming. Echinacea - coneflower, can't say enough, I have double delight, sunset and tiki torch now. Autumn sage in any color, Mexican petunia, Any gaura - just don't fertilize them! I nearly killed one that way. Prefers to be left alone. Pink loosestrife - grows from 1-5 feet in one season, blooms like crazy. Russian sage, love the flowers, love the sage scent... I have grown everything I listed above as I played in my garden. And they are all happy in full southern sun, but okay with a break in the sun during the day. Don't need a lot of water, or attention. I also do a lot of daylilies and roses, mix of floribundas, hybrids and landscape. Since you are in DFW area, go here, and look at the plant lists. Anything Northhaven sells will grow great in our area. Have fun, the problem is narrowing it down. I just forced myself to redo my beds with more landscape roses and shrubs, and removed some perennials - just realized everything in the list above is still there except for the Mexican Petunias and coreopsis - so they must be easy to grow and great bloomers, nothing stays in my bed that doesn't look good! Help me choose perennials/colors for front yard - Dallas area

That is a great starting list of plants for the area. Only comment is that flame acanthus wants to get substantially larger than the rest. Ours gets to about 5ft tall in a single season and often doesn't die back much, so could become much larger if we let it. More periodic pruning might keep it looking good at a shorter stature. Agree with Pkponder about white. Two to consider fitting in somewhere for their exceptionally long bloom runs are blackfoot daisy and white flowered gaura cultivars like 'Snow Fountain'. I have no eye for advising on color selections, but a few others I especially like for their long or repeating blooms are: Four-nerve daisy, summer phlox (especially Texas proven 'John Fanick' and 'Victoria'), and autumn sage - which has generic plants and named cultivars in a wide variety of colors. Maybe some of these will fit with your final collection. I second everything on Georgia's list, too. Though Mexican heather is often tagged as an annual in Dallas, so might belong on the tender list for your location. Ours in an exposed site died and another in a sheltered spot is coming back from this year's freeze.

Littlebug - glad to hear from a Missourian here, thank you. Yes, that lower bed of yellow is Zagreb and is VERY hardy and proficient, much more than the Moonbeam I had at first. And I do have 2 different beds which have Shasta Daisy. Andy, thank you and I have really been thinking hard about a good reblooming Daylilly, maybe red. I actually have one whole bed of Daylilly and another smaller portion of bed with different daylily but they all do fantastic in my zone and soil. Also have Shasta Daisy in two beds. Your Echinaceas are beautiful and especially like the red one. That is why I liked my Gaillardia because it had red edges and I have, after looking closely to my pic above (use the Zoom to make larger) I actually think I need something other than solid yellow, which is why I liked my Gaillardia because it had red edges. In the 11 years of having this perennial bed I have tried MANY different perennials, and quite a few just don't like it here, and therefore I will probably do some more doubling up on the varieties of those which have done well. I also have to work with what is available at my nurseries. And Echloane, thanks again. As I mentioned above I have several Daylily beds but they do best of anything. So this is a very good possibility. I have some great ideas here, and learned about flowers I have really never heard of before, I have pots of annuals in this bed right now and may just live with those for right now unless I just happen to see something more permanent the next time I go to Kansas City. I am also a Bluebird Nut and cater to them, especially around this nesting time, so they take up a lot of my time, monitoring the nest, feeding mealworms, etc.

Neil Sperry is a well known gardening guru for Texas. Although I live in Oklahoma I have subscribed to his magazine for 20 years. He also has a book out that is right up a newbies alley and well worth the investment. Or, for the short term, you could use your local library which I'm sure has a copy. There is also a Texas forum, which may be able to help you somewhat. In the Dallas area you have a wonderful nursery to go to called North Haven. It's reputation goes beyond the Dallas metro-plex. You also have the Dallas botanical gardens and the Ft. Worth Arboretum. You have many, many more resources in Texas on gardening then we do here for instance. Have fun.
