Which DA's generally do not flop in your garden? There had been a thread about this last week on the rose forum which was deleted for some reason. Thanks.

Well, 'flop around' is a term rather broadly conceived. Do you want roses that stay short, short and upright, short and bushy, tall and upright, or just upright blooms ...?

Anyway, here are a few of my 'non-floppy mannerly' growers to add to Pam's list:

Molineux, Lady Emma Hamilton, Port Sunlight, Heritage, Darcey Bussell, Tamora, Ann Boleyn, Ambridge Rose, Crocus Rose, The Pilgrim (can be grown as a climber but also as a broad and bushy shrub, is not lanky and doesn't 'flop'), Geoff Hamilton, Fair Bianca, Jubilee Celebration, Portmeirion, The Prince, Princess Alexandra of Kent, Prospero, Sharifa Asma, Rosemoor, Munstead Wood, Summer Song, Sophie's Rose, The Alnwick Rose, The Squire, William Shakespeare 2000 ...

Hi Anna, Well....welcome to our world!! I'd say your amaryllis would have been guarantted to bloom in 5 weeks if it had all the optimal conditions, but sitting in a box at room temp for who knows how long wasn't what it needed!! Most of those box kits show up in the stores in October and at that point they have come from the distributor where they have been chilled and just ready to bloom. If they aren't given warmth, water, and a little love within a window of a couple of months...they may say, "Forget it, I'll wait till next year!!". So obviously, your good efforts at Christmastime just arrived too late. BUT...there is good news!! Put that bulb outside where it can soak up the sun and keep it watered (not soaking) with 1/2 strength Miracle Gro (or a similar water based fertilizer). Those leaves should grow nice and green and STRONG and be able to support themselves! Then...around late August (you are getting a late start!!) stop watering and turn the pot on its side where the rain can't hit the soil. Those nice leaves should yellow up and shrivel. At that point, cut them back to the neck of the bulb and put the bulb in the pot somewhere where the temp will be above freezing for the next 8 weeks. Bring it out...8 weeks later, give it some water and warmth, (and sunlight if possible...although winter dreariness might do) and you may be rewarded with blooms. Since it's had a rough first year, just be patient with it...it might go on its natural cycle and bloom in the spring. As soon as it's warm enough (April/May) put it outside so it can soak up the benefits. You need to build that bulb back up so that it will reward you with blooms! GOOD LUCK...and be patient!! Kristi

Did you remember to yell SHOO? LOL As the adults are crepuscular to nocturnal they tend to not want to fly between dawn and dusk. That's probably more than anything as protection from diurnal predators. As Susan suggested, put it out and let it decide when to fly on its own. If it has something wrong with it and can't fly, then it won't finish its life cycle anyway so let nature take its course. Predators need to eat too, and that would take the strain off another healthy prey individual. Larry

Genie 1/2 HP Screw Drive Opener Won't Open

I just replaced the carraige on an older genie garage door opener with the three piece rail. It was a simple fix, off with the old, on with the new and I lubed the carriage and screwdrive with the recommended grease! My problem is the vibration as the carriage tracks!! I checked the joints where the rail joins together and they are tight! The design of the 3 piece rail does not lend itself to a vibration free operation! There appears to be sway from side to side with no bracing between header and motor. Question: Are there any brackets out there that can fix this problem, after market, hand made, etc.. DIYGrandpa

Thank you guys! It is a little bittersweet, I have to admit. After all, both my wife and I grew up here and both of our entire family and all of our friends are here. Leaving is not going to be easy, but being able to finally break out of being in a seasonal position is a great opportunity. Leaving Fish and Wildlife at the Arsenal isn't necessarily what I wanted to do, either. But the reality is that eventually the Army money that we are being paid out of is going to run out. Its a weird thing that every paycheck you get puts you closer to being laid off. It's also a very small and not well funded organization even in the best years. Without getting too political, these upcoming ones are definitely not going to be some of those "best years." So while I do love working for FWS it would put me in a very tight spot if I were to limit myself, and especially if I were to try and stay on the Front Range. But with al that being said, I'm definitely looking forward to this new experience down in Arizona. From what I can tell, its going to be absolutely gorgeous down there. I have never been there, except when we stepped over the line at the Hoover Dam back when I was like 7. So all of this will be tremendously facinating and exciting get to be around a completely different landscape from the one I'm used to. I know those types of experiences very well, Popmama. But I hope this time isn't one of those, haha. Although it's good to hear that the desert there left an overall good impression on you, despite the difficulty. At least you're not just trying to convince me how hot it's going to be ;). I will definitely be putting up pictures of all the new things I find down there. I'm sure the novelty of cactus flowers will wane around here after the first month or so. I'm pretty sure they don't really bloom until late "winter" so you guys have until at least then.

Ohhh . . . In Southern California, The Pilgrim not only arched and flopped, it actually formed vine-like growth at the tips that snaked along the ground. Armed with teeny prickles, it snagged the ankles of the unwary.
It caught DH one too many times, and was summarily removed.

It occurs to me that if you want the romantic old-style blooms, but on upright plants of a Hybrid Tea type, you should look at the Romanticas, from Meilland.

That's a good correction on The Pilgrim. Admittedly, I got quite a kick out of the way in which our SoCal Austin critic Jeri makes him sound like a menace, poor thing. Well, he's a pretty famous and time tested rose and shows none of this, uhm, creepy behavior in our English garden where he resides as a beautiful, well branched non-floppy shrub, easily kept in shape. I've also seen him as the same mannerly shrub in various front yards and as a mannerly climber on houses in town where he is a sight to behold. All this might depend on the climate and length of growing season which is probably even shorter in z5 Missouri than it is here in z8 England, never mind z10 SoCal. I'll post some pics later in the season. Anyway, better stick to the others to be on the safe side!

I agree that the Romanticas are HT-type in growth and leaf, completely character.

You could also try some roses of the Italian breeder Barni that are not unsimilar to the Romanticas in character. Roses Unlimited sells them in the US. I got them directly from Barni in Italy - they sent me the mightiest bareroots I've ever seen. Great quality.

Not an Austin, but speaking of HT's, how about Traviata?
I second Tamora, beautiful and upright in socal. Also, Queen of Sweden.

I know.
David Austin doesn't believe that they grow like that here, either.
But they do.
And it's not just Austins!
I'm told that Sally Holmes is a mannerly 4 ft in England.
In my garden, she is a tree.

And we're not Z10, really. We're Sunset Zone 24.
It makes a huge difference, both for good or ill.

Othello doesn't flop in my garden. upright and dangerous, with enough scent that one flower in an arrangement will do. Mollineux is a joy, and doesn't flop. Susz

Queen of Sweden is the only one I have that isn't long, leggy and out of control so all of her blooms are upright. Oddly though she took twice as long as all the others to grow so I'd say she's smaller and very vertical. She also has no smell which annoys me to no end. All my others flop like my dog after a walk.

Othello, when pruned hard in winter, looks great until early summer in North Carolina, but then he starts shooting out 12+ ft canes (with a flower or two at the end) that inevitably begin to flop. Flowers and scent are to die for, but he's a major flopper later in the season, at least in the southeast.
