polycarbonate source?

Does anyone know where to get polycarbonate sheeting for a reasonable price? I'm making some cold frames and thought the sheeting would be lighter than glass and perhaps more durable around kids, wind, etc.

I get mine from a shop in Dandenong called plastics for industry. They charge about $8/m^2 for rolls of PC and $20/m^2 for 6mm twinwall.

I was in the research and development industry for quite a few years and had some experience in making submittals to the FDA. I learned a lot of times these articles do not give all the info needed. To get to the real meat and bones, it is useful to actually find the scientific journal article. When testing (to comply with any regs or guidelines, ie, FDA) is being done especially a product that may come into contact with a food source, the product is put through EXTREME conditions. I don't know the conditions that this product was put through but I am assuming that it was incredible heat for a generous amount of time and treated with some very toxic chemicals for a long duration. In a greenhouse, the polycarbonate is never going to see these temp extremes and never going to be cleaned with these chemicals. The product spec for polycarbonate states the chemicals which are compatible for cleaning; dishwashing soap, citric acid, etc. Because I am getting ready to dig the foundation for my polycarbonate GH I will check into this study for my own curiousity but I really doubt it will dissuade me from using the product. Don't get me wrong, I am just as paranoid as the next guy about all the toxins and chemicals put into our environment and foods. I'm convinced that the huge corporations combined with the government are partly to blame for the rising increase in cancer rates. That's a whole 'nother subject and can of worms. If I find any info, I would be happy to pass it along to any who are interested.

Try the yellow pages under "plexiglass".... When I was considering building a new greenhouse, I found that the local plastic supply place - less than a mile away - had better prices than any of the on-line sources (Farmtek, Grower's Supply, etc.) for the twin-wall stuff, AND without the horrendous shipping charges for 4x8 sheets of the stuff.

You might have better luck with a metal supplier than a greenhouse business (at least cost-wise). For 8mm polycarb, you probably want channel with a 3/8" opening (which is equivalent to 9.5mm). A 5/16" opening would be 7.9 mm and would be too tight. Here is one example for an East Coast source. We recently built a new deck in our backyard and we want to add a pergola with a cover that will provide shade in the summer and keep the rain off in the winter. The deck is 18' x 18' and we were planning on overlapping the cover at least a foot on all sides, so it will be about 20' x 20'. I'm concerned that an opaque cover like metal would make the area feel too dark and/or unwelcoming, especially in the winter. So after doing some research I'm considering twinwall polycarbonate in a translucent color that allows some light through but not too much. But before I buy anything I have some concerns that I haven't been able to find sufficient answers for. Is is really loud during a rainstorm? The deck is close to our bedroom and we don't want to be kept up during a hard rain. Does it look dirty, and if so is it hard to clean? How well does it hold up over time? Also, is there any way to get a look at the different colors in person? We went to HD but they only had corrugated panels and I didn't like their color options, I'm curious about the metallic sheen colors available from some sources. I searched for examples that I could visit and the vast majority were too far away for me to be willing to travel to. Does anybody know about anything in the Bay Area, preferably the North Bay? Thanks in advance! I'm grateful for any advice I can get, including recommendations for other products that might be better suited to our needs. If you want to make a trip up to Montana with a REALLY long trailer, I'd cut you a pretty good deal on some panels I have left over. I've got about 20 (I have to check the exact number) 6' x 21' panels of 8mm COEX-Macrolux poly. They do have about 5 years of use in them but are in great shape. I ended up not using all of them because after much deliberation, I decided I needed 16mm for our climate. OUCH!!!

Are they the same panels I see at Lowe's that people use on top of porches and such?

The single glazed wiggly roof stuff is the same, yes. That's what I use. If you want double glazed it is sometimes cheaper to buy two sheets of single glazed, or even just put a layer of very thin film on the inside. I used very thin 'painting drop sheet' on the inside, where it is protected from the wind and the sun by the polycarbonate on the outside. The film costs about 10c/m^2, compared with $10/m^2 for polycarbonate and lets more light through and is easy to attach with a staple gun.

Not necessarily the same. the 8mm stuff upforachallenge has is likely twin wall polycarb. The stuff at Lowes may be the same as what nathan used, but without a spec sheet and a name it's hard to tell.

Here are three websites that offer polycarbonate for sale. I believe Sundance has a high minimum order, I don't think greenhouse-etc. has a minimum order. When I purchase polycorbonate for my g/h I am planning on purchasing from greenhouses-etc.

IGC USA has polycarb 4x8 sheets 8mm Clear for $53.02. They have a crating charge of $120 but you can pick it up at Edgerton WI, Montclair CA, or Georgetown IL (Champaign-Urbana) at their warehouses. http://www.4greenhouses.com

FarmTek has polycarb 4x8 sheets 8mm Clear for $49.95. They have a $7.00 per foot crating charge so I guess that would be $56 for 8ft. sheets and their truck shipping rate is very reasonable. 8mm Film Transfer, VHS to DVD, Cassette to CD, 35mm Slide Scanning

Several of our members here asked about the procedure to convert VHS to DVD without a video card. It's pretty easy for you to do it by your self if you have the following items (without an expensive video card) and follow the instruction below:

Hardware requirements:
1.Powerful PC for video capturing and edtting;
2.Firewire (I1394) port
3.Digital Camcorder with AV in/out
4.VHS player (VCR)

Software requirements
1. Pinnacle Pro Plus or
2. Adobe Premier or
3. There are many other cunsumer level video editing software

Step-by-step:
1. Connect your VCR to the camcorder via the A/V In/out cable, usually it has a component interface to VCR or a s_video interface, remember to turn A/V (or s_Video)
in/out to "ON", in the camcorder's menu function
2. Switch the camcorder to "PLAY" mode;
3. Connect the PC with Camcorder with a Firewire cable (I1394);
4. Power on the VCR player;
5. Power on the camcorder;
6. Open the video capturing software, even the standard Windows Movie Maker can capture the footage into AVI format file. - remember to capture into AVI, it's the
best for archiving and editting, NOT Mpg-2 or any other formats.
7. Play the video tape from VCR.
