Did my fiance kill my bleeding heart?

Today my fiance mowed my lawn for the 1st time. I did not get a chance to show him where flowers are coming up so he could avoid them. He mowed down my very special bleeding heart, which my mother & I planted in 1990 when my father died. There is nothing left but chopped-off stems and one or two sprigs with leaves on them. I believe it will come back next year, but can anyone tell me if there is any hope of its revival this year?

I bet you will get some foliage but maybe not flowers.

If it's going to come back, it'll do so best if you ignore it a bit for a few wks except for watering - but less ofren than normally, as a plant with no leaves can't really use water properly. It's unlikely the sun alone was the problem though, but it's even possible it got a case of spider mites (lack of humidity can provoke them) as a result of being a bit drier than usual, along with improper watering (too much all at once, and then nothing, or vice versa). As well, it's spring, and if you haven't taken it out of the pot recently to see how rootbound it might have become, that could also be a problem - the more rootbound a plant is, the less water will be taken up and held in the mix. So check that now, and if necessary repot, but otherwise just give it a chance to recover - the more you do otherwise can stress it further.

Don't give up! I can tell you our 4 Sambucus shrubs really took off this year after being planted 3 years ago. They are finally stunning and thriving! We were really considering giving up on them if they looked as ratty at the end of this season as they did for the last couple. I'm really stunned and wish I had a before/after pic because it really is something. By the way... No fertilizer - no nothing other than it's "natural" environment and some minimal pruning/shaping.

Thread necro, but maybe someone else has had this issue, or knows what the reason is... Mine lost its colour and looks the same as the other green bleeding heart I have. This is my first year with it, and I've put it on the north side of a fence where it never gets any direct sun. It seems happy, it's just green. Was definitely gold when I bought it earlier this spring. Why! OP if you are still around, has your plant coloured any differently since you started this thread?

I think it's wrong for him to make such a drastic financial decision without your vote too. i think it's wrong for him to make such a life changing decision without you feeling comfortable with it. I think him being a clean freak and not putting his foot down on her disgusting habits is absolutely disrespectful towards you.. especially since you are the one cleaning it up. If he is the absolute love of your life and you think you can't live without him, then i would suggest (and maybe this is crazy) getting a house with a connected inlaw suite situation and putting her in it!Maybe then you can have "family time" when it is right for you. i know i will get criticized on that one.. ok it does sound crazy lol..but this child doesn't seem too concerned with anyone else, does she? Kids aren't stupid. They know what they're doing.If you can afford it, get her counseling and keep her busy with summer programs. In the long run, kids like a little discipline and order, whether they realize it or not. You've got to start all over with this girl and decide to make her new upbringing a project you both agree to or.. well.. RUN!!! The only reason i'm not starting my input out with "RUN!!!" is because i live with my boyfriend and he is the sweetest, warmest, kindest boyfriend ever. However, when his girls disrespect me he puts his foot down because he knows i'm taking on alot. They are over every other weekend and the only reason i am taking on this situation (not wanting kids AT ALL)is because he deserves my love and attention. He is all the things most women crave in a boyfriend and i love him dearly. We have a great relationship, so i put up with life being not what i planned on. Having said that, if we were to break up, THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO WAY I WOULD DATE SOMEONE WHO HAD KIDS, unless they were adults and out of the house and normal and excessively kind to me. i stopped mid way through your story and said a prayer for you.. and i'm not even religious. If he can't make this situation easier for you, and you still want to see him, then do so, from the luxury of your own clean, dreamy place. If he can't compromise, let him clean up his own mess. lets put betting aside.. and suggest that with ABSOLUTELY NO IMPACT TO the ROOT MASS ...

i doubt it will die.. unless you let him mow it again .. and again.. and again ...

it will most likely.. regenerate the top part .. and probably bloom late.. out of cycle ...

repeated mowing all summer long could be detrimental ...

most root structures are storage units for next year.. so how well it regenerates green .. to store food for next year ... will result in how well it does next year ... but this early in the season ... i doubt there will be a big impact ... if any

now.. what we really need to discuss.. is this guys use of power tools ... or in the alternative.. his ability to earn enough money.. to hire out these kinds of jobs.. lol

and in his defense.. you need to work on delineating the flower beds from the lawn ... thru edging ... so go easy on him ... he was just trying to help ... [and God help me.. not the plastic edging] ...

dont worry about it .... back to betting.. the odds are heavily in its favor ... here.. let me put it this way.. early summer hail storms.. can do EXACTLY the same thing to plants.. and 99% recover.. w/o looking back ...

I've not grown this plant, but there are threads around here where people complain they are hard to kill when they don't want them, so that's a good sign for your plant!

My first reaction was the same as Ken's. If there was a border around this plant this wouldn't have happened. Now that you have a strong helper...

Maybe y'all will do best with sharing the mowing. That's what we do here. I like to mow around the spiderwort in the grass, at least until about mid summer when they are finished blooming. My honey is willing to mow the whole thing, but not willing to do all of this turning and I respect that. So I do that part of the yard. I usually do the first few passes near the beds also to make sure the outflow is directed away from them.

He sounds awesome, though. Taking the initiative to mow like that. It sounds like you know he was just trying to be helpful. Sounds like a keeper!

While I know it's a special plant that has sentimental value to it related to your Father's demise..be thankful your boyfriend was mowing the lawn and like Ken suggested,take and show him the boundaries so he'll be more careful the next time he mows..plan a border or separation from the flowerbed and lawn. even if it means pressure treated landscape timbers or scallopped brick borders. Check on Free Cycle, maybe somebody is giving something like that away..or place that request on FREE Cycle for such in your area. Somebody was giving away about a dozen round brick stepping stones and I was the lucky winner last year. All I had to do was drive less than 10 miles to get them.
