What new Nurseries did you try this year??

And, more importantly how did they do for you?

I was very fortunate to find three that did very well for me.

1) Rogue Valley Roses-I've ordered from them three times now and am very impressed. They have a good selection, reasonable prices and great personalized customer service.

The plants have all been healthy too.

2)Chamblees-I visited them in 2006 but I knew I was moving so couldn't order until this Spring.

They also have a good selection and very reasonable prices at $8.95 per gallon so I'll be ordering more from them.

The plants all arrived in good condition despite a five day trip.

3)Antique Rose Emporium-Again a good selection of the types I'm looking for and reasonable prices.

The plants arrived in great shape and I really liked getting 2 gallon Roses.

I've yet to try Palatine or Witherspoon but I think I've tried most of the rest of them.

I think we're lucky to have such good suppliers and I am always open to suggestions.

I've got a new place and it's a blank canvas.

Appalachian Roses!! Ron had a couple of Van Fleet roses that I really wanted to add to my collection, so I took a chance and ordered them from him. I received gallon-size roses that are well-rooted and ready for the garden. These are absolutely the finest mail-order potted roses I have here. His shipping charges are very reasonable, and the customer service is the best. (Can you tell that I'm very, very pleased?)

I think the only place that I haven't ordered from yet is Antique Rose Emporium. I plan to do that very soon because I'd like to try their clone of Maggie -- she was one of the few victims here this past winter. For those who have ordered ARE, is there an number of roses to order to optimize one's shipping $$? (Like Vintage's 4-packs?)

I ordered a few from Palatine's Roses
This is the first time for me
And so far their bareroots has left a lasting impression on me. Their bareroots are extremly healthy and super big.

Seniorita Rosalita is a Proven Winner cultivar. I think you have to buy the plants each year. But one plant becomes a nice clump. Salvia farinacea Victoria beside it. The other dwarf cleome are also Proven Winners. They were also striking, though not as dense a clump (slightly larger flowers). As I noted, someone thought it would be a good idea to pick them. While the taller cleome can be nice, they take much more room and, in my experience, soon become seedy. Seniorita has been blooming three months and is more beautiful than ever at about 26 inches.

Over the last year I've added 2 varieties of apples, purple leafed plum, lavenders, german chamomile, roman chamomile, chicory, yarrow, elderberry, wolfberry, another hazelnut, borage, garlic, and comfrey, as well as veggies like peppers, tomatoes, radishes, scarlet runner beans, and I've just sown 2 varieties of kale. I added some things a bit late (I just recently found out about edible forest gardens!), so I may need to replace a couple of things that look iffy. This fall I'm hoping to add raspberries, thornless blackberries, red currants, grape vine, and a mulberry.

Hi everyone! Got my Bouvardia ternifolia in the mail the other day. I love its color! Steve, Thanks for the info and the beautiful pics! I guess the red petunia will probably be a bust but we'll see. I like bees as well though. :) Funny you should mention pentas. I've been reading Hummingbirds and Butterflies (Peterson Field Guides/Bird Watcher's Digest Backyard Bird Guides) and they recommend pentas with dark eyes or something like that (the book is at home). I might find a spot for some! Susan, Same with me. I'll spot a few males for a day or two in late March or earlier April and get super excited hoping some will stick around but they never do. I won't see any regular ones until early July. I'm considering putting up a feeder next week just in the hopes of trying to get one to stick around longer! Laugh. I've only been to Bustani once. It was cool. I'm hoping my Erythrina x bidwillii (Coral Bean Hybrid) made it through this brutal winter okay. Surely it will sprout from the base if all of the top is dead from the cold. Can't believe your hummers don't dig David Verity! Mine absolutely love it though I did see that the one in a pot on the back deck got way more attention than the ones I had growing in the ground so you might try one in a pot on an elevated spot to see if you get any action. Oh, I noticed hummers coming to our sunflowers last year but didn't realize they were eating insects. I'll have to pay closer attention this year. :) Sherry, Yea. I went way, way overboard this year. Who knows how many plants will make it or will actually be started from seed since I've no room inside at this point! Thanks for the Malvaviscus drummondii recommendation. I've grown them before. Sometimes Home Depot will carry them so I'll grab one this year if I see any and I'll let everyone know which plants were the biggest hit this year. :) -Robert

I'm trying so many new things this year I don't know if I can list them all! I started last Fall changing my big vegetable garden over to a hummingbird-butterfly garden. These are what I've added so far. Vines Honeysuckle - Scarlet Dropmore Cross Vine- Tangerine Beauty Perennials Penstemon - several different kinds Lobelia - Ruby Slippers Verbascum Clary Sage Shrubs Variegated Weigela Wine and Roses Weiglea Annuals Lady in Red Salvia Forrest Fire Salvia Shrimp PLant Cigar Plant Hanging Basket of Million Bells Mr President Canna Nicotiana Cleome Scarlet Snapdragons Ipomopsis I am trying to make this place a hummer heaven!!! I just spotted my first hummer of the season last evening. She didn't touch a flower but just briefly flew into some green vines that hang on the overgrown shrubs behind a fence at the back of my yard. I wonder if she was gathering webs for a nest or something.

Rosemania- biggest bareroots ever! awesome roses highly recommend

Chamblee's - great price and plants. Great for more vigorous varieties but my hot cocoa, scentimental and SDLM are struggling and not growing much despite being upgraded to 2 gal black pots. The two austins are doing great though. They are blooming and I just transferred them out of the 2 gal and into the ground.

Hortico- Decent bareroots, better than JP, all doing well

Roses Unlimited- awesome. Ordered 6 from them. 3 were blooming when they arrived. Great packaging. Great selection too.

I usually order from Countryside Roses, Antique Rose Emporium, Ashdowns and Chamblees. This year I ordered bareroots from S&W in Nashville and was really happy. They are all leafed out and look very healthy.

I've been wanting to order from Appalachian Rose and Roses Unlimited but haven't yet. I'm always glad to hear about good nurseries and owners who are conscientious.

I agree with Appalachian Roses!! I bought two from them this year and was very impressed with the size and health of the plants. Their shipping container was sturdy and held the potted plants securely. They arrived in excellent shape.

Hortico. First time I have ever ordered roses. They came in a timely manner and are doing fine. Rosa Mundi, a 'late sleeper' is starting to flutter her eyelids a bit. Memorial Day is moving a bit. All seems fine.

Edmunds. I didn't order last year because of the buyout, but I had to get Falling in Love this year and they were the only place that had it. Both Falling in Love and Melody Parfume were a very good size and looked great. My husband looked so sad when he asked how big of a hole to dig and I held up Falling in Love. My only complaint is that the graft could have been lower on Melody Parfume. I hate when there is a stem between the roots and the graft.

I also ordered from Wisconsin Roses for the first time, and I'll get those this week.

I tried Moore's roses out of pa. I think the people buying from them are keeping tight lipped about them, because i see they very quickly run out of stock on some items. Maybe i should shut up, but i think they are the best kept secret. I love vintage, rogue, high country also. Haven't received ashdown order yet.

I ordered from Rogue Valley this year, and I'm very pleased. I also want to add that I succombed to an impulse buy from Burgess (which I don't recommend as a good vendor because the plants are usually VERY tiny). But, I saw the collection of 9 Brownell sub-zero roses for about $50, and thought, "What the heck?" Well, the roses arrived, were soaked, and planted a couple of months ago, and so far they look excellent. I can't say that I got the varieties I ordered, nor can I say that they are virus free. I can say they look as healthy or healthier than the other roses in my collection.
