R.I.P. - What didn't survive this winter?

I know it's still early for some of us, but what new plants did you buy last year that did not survive the winter?

I have some that are definitely deader than a door knob, that I had such high hopes for last year:

Heuchera - Mahogany

Coreopsis - Full Moon, Snowberry

Gaillardia - Tizzy, Frenzy, Oranges & Lemons

Echinacea - Coconut Lime, Harvest Moon, Pink Double Delight

I am getting tired of trying new varieties only to have them not come back. On the other hand, these newbies are coming back like gangbusters:

Coreopsis - Jethro Tull

Echinacea - Tiki Torch, Virgin, Raspberry Tart

Leucanthemum - Gold Rush, Sunshine

I may be wrong, but most of the perennials you mentioned would not be showing any new growth yet. The Heuchera very well could be, two of mine over wintered fine; the foliage never died back (Stoplight and Purple Petticoats).

I would agree -- it's definitely too early to make any sort of accurate judgement.

Ianna- Thank you, but only two roses actually died...the others just died back a few inches above the ground. They'll be fine, but since some only bloom on old wood, I thought they'd be happier at my mom's house. The good news is that my little Hybrid Musks seem very hardy, as are the other two gallicas (Belle de Crecy) and the John Cabot roses are wonderful! I got four at Lowe's last year (own root/zone 3) and they look wonderful after our long winter. The Celsiana was also surprising. While the Ispahans did not do well, the Celsiana seems more like a rugosa than a damask. It hardly suffered any cane damage and it's leafing out all over the place! Sorry to see that your lavender had a tough time. I don't know if Hidcote is something you want to try (or have already) but they usually sell it at Lowe's around mid-July, in our area. They carry many lavenders, but that's the one that seems to do best in my cold micro-climate. Living in a small valley, with a creek, seems to make for much colder winters and shorter frost-free growing seasons...but very pretty! :)

Connie, if your Lorraine Sunshine is only 2 years old, I'd wait another 2-3 years before you divide it, let it get established first. Well, by golly Toots... it looks like my Monarda didyma Marshall's Delight is up too! When I lived in Saskatoon I grew Beebalm like weeds and I can't tell you how many attempts have I tried to get a clump growing here in Wainwright since the year of 2000! You're right Shauna, it appears that my Japanese Painted Fern is poking thru....I just brushed some leaves back and lo and behold it's alive, it's alive....if this grow great, I'll pick up another 2 so its not so alone ;) Laurie, too bad about your other Hawkeye Belle. One thing I noticed today is that nothing is come up with the three plants of Verbascum bombyciferum Giant Silver Mullein that I bought last year....it still has the leaves from last year but nothing....Faith, if you still visit here at the FN forum, how's yours doing? Hi Siobhan, it's been a tough year for me. A member of my family battled colon cancer this year. Thankfully, she is now in remission. I guess my emotions are still pretty raw from dealing with that experience. Marco's death is just so unfair. I'm finding it hard to process. Your experience is very similar to the loss of another friend I experienced a few years back. It is an awful feeling. Someone mentioned in an earlier posting about how Marco's obituary sounded like he himself had written it. Actually last summer, Marco informed me that he had updated his will, and made various lists and instructions for his friends and family in the case of his death. This is so typical of Marco's consideration for others. He himself may have written the obituary, though I can't imagine he ever thought that he had so little time left.

Just because the roots are horribly twisted and curled about in a container doesn't meant the tree will die once planted and fallen over. Just for the heck of it I let this Lawson Cypress live after it fell as sort of an example, I guess I thought I could make a short hedge out of it, but an Incense Cedar (Calocedrus decurrans) nearby grew up and shaded it quite a bit. Then the Cedar started leaning toward the light and my house and I decided it had to go. That was two years ago and now the cypress is starting to fill out some due to the increased light. Pruning out the dead limbs is the next order of business. That, and getting that old hose out of there. This isn't in a very visible place so I've been able to put up with it for a number of years. It's also in the shade of a 35 ft. Parrotia persica so someday I'm going to remove the cypress. Embothrium, you've been talking about rootbound trees falling over for years. Here's a good example. ;-)

Well, actually, there are a lot of plants I am reserving judgement on. The ones I listed, though, have pretty much disintegrated, just a few dead roots. It seems like it's early to me too. But I have got quite a few of the 'later' perennials showing leaves already.

schoolhouse - I have at least 30 different heucheras, and all the rest of them are doing fine, even sending up lots of new leaves already. But Mahogany does not have even any viable roots left.

My echinacea and other coreopsis all have quite a few green leaves showing already. In fact, Jethro Tull and Creme Brulee are both almost 2" tall already.

But don't worry, I'm not yanking anything out. I don't count it as completely dead unless there's no green by July! Never give up hope. I was wondering how people in the warmer zones were finding their new stuff.

I bought Agastache 'Red Fortune' on sale in the fall and planted it, not realizing it is only hardy to USDA z 7. I wasted my money on that one. Why would my local nursery be selling that plant as a "perennial" in USDA z.4 (maybe 5)?

Oh my gosh, that's quite a collection. Blooms aren't always that showy, but I still enjoy their foliage and they are very hardy in my garden.

Try Rave On. It has huge gorgeous blooms and seems to continue blooming most of the summer. It also has very pretty leaves, but is one that you could definitely grow just for the flowers. I actually put some of them in a vase and they looked great.

My coreopsis Creme Brulee is showing no signs of growth whatsoever. And it is grown in very full sun. I was really surprised it didn't survive but I have not given up complete hope yet.

redsox - Don't give up hope. Usually, my creme brulee is one of the last things I see coming up. Mine is in full sun too. I have had several of them for a few years and never lost one yet. But most years, I swear they are dead and then they surprise me and pop up!
