Zone 10/California: Privacy Screen Suggestions?

Hi folks,

I have two chainlink fences, one 66' long and the other 45' long. My wife and I need some privacy from nosy neighbors. The screen along the 66' fence needs some height to block the view of our neighbors ugly barn - probably 20' eventually. The 45' fence needs about a 5'-8' high screen - and we'd love to get some color here, too, maybe something with blossoms?

The area has full sun, and we have some pretty strong winds. This is a Zone 10 or Sunset zone 23 area. We'd like evergreen options. Current soil is rocky clay, though we may use raised beds.

We've considered Italian cypress on the 66' fence, but we're a bit concerned with high winds.

Anyone have suggestions?

Clumping bamboos (or runners if you're up to the challenge) might be perfect. The different species come in conveniently assorted sizes. It can be expensive to go for the clumping bamboo for so much length, but they really are pretty, especially the Fargesia species which are usually under 15 feet (you'd have to be sure to select one that's right for your climate).

And of course for the lower screen, there's always the classic oleander...

Sandeigo, Mandevilla is beautiful, but you don't want to spend your time sweeping up leaves and blossoms. Boy do they shed leaves and blossoms! And they are extremely thorny! Jasmine is a good choice. There are numerous varieties of jasmines that are evergreen and will flower and bloom for you. Then there is Passiflora, which can really take off for you because they grow fast, and the flowers are incredible! (that is what I have on an arbor). CHeck out Brushwood Nursery online. They have sooo many different kinds of vines for you to check out to see what you like. By the way, I love your pergola!

Podocarpus. It's neat and formal and bug resistant. I planted 4 to block the pool filter and you couldn't see it within a year. It's such a full shrub and it's evergreen. Easy to shear too. You might be able to prune a lemon tree into that shape, such as Lisbon or Eureka on standard rootstock. I think "evergreen" is the main stickler in your scenario (or edible, but I want my entire garden to be edible--or fragrant--so I would never drop that requirement :) ). Carla in Sac
