Comments (5)Thanks for the advice y'all. The aerobic spray would've been good for convenience & conservation, but I think I'll scout out a different location for the compost. I was mostly worried about the chlorine killing the bacteria needed for the compost and we don't want that. Thanks for confirming my suspicions. I read somewhere (on GW) that the chlorine dissipates after some time (a couple days?). I may just capture some of the spray, let it set & then use it for watering (landscape). If the mutant weeds and "doo doo grass" are any indication, there are definitely some "nutrients" left in that water that plants seem to like (a good indication that it's NOT potable - lol). Or, it could just be that they get lots of water. It's too bad the sprinkler heads are located where they're pretty much useless for landscaping. Oh well. I'm gonna TRY to figure out some way to make use of the otherwise wasted water. I'll use it on some & use other water on others & see what happens. Thanks again, Mari...See MoreWhat can be planted near septic? Septic design included.
Comments (20)The OP posted while I was preparing this post so she already found the FAQ: ................................................................................................. Like carolma I also thought the cesspool had to be replaced when the property changed hands but the FAQ page I linked to above says: "Does Title 5 require every cesspool to be replaced? No. Only those cesspools that exhibit signs of hydraulic failure, are located extremely close to private or public water supplies, or otherwise fail to protect or pose a threat to public health, safety or the environment will need to be upgraded (310 CMR 15.303). Also, cesspools must be upgraded prior to an increase in design flow (e.g., the addition of a bedroom to a home or seats to a restaurant)." I live in Plymouth and they're very picky, particularly since the soil is generally sandy and we're right on top of the big Plymouth Carver Aquifer. Hopefully your neighborhood has better ground conditions - it's a good sign that other people have the same systems. Comments (5)Measure diameter of hole and multiply by 3.5. Cut a piece of flexiable plastic or heavy cardboard or metal roof flashing long as number found above X twice the thickness of tank cover. Work strip to snuggly fit inside tapered hole making sure lower edges line up ( top edges will miss-alighn where they meet but it doesn't matter.) Use duct or other strong tape to join ends. Wax inside ring and set on waxed plywood. Fill ring 3/4trs full of sackcrete and bury wire reinforcmet and handle in it before it sets. You might have to lightly agitate concrete to make sure ring form is round. Many people just lay flat rot resistant material over the hole which seems to work fine....See Morebean_counter_z4
