Black Berried Shrub in Philly Suburbs

Carrie B

I didn't see the shrub itself, just this branch. It is, apparently, a large multi-stemmed shrub and was found in the Philly suburbs, in a residential yard, apparently not intentionally planted. The branching is opposite, in a whorled type pattern (each pair of branchlets cuts across the middle of the plane of the pair above and below).

The plant appears to have thorns at the end of each small branchlet in addition to some thorns along the stem. I do not know if it is evergreen, but I don't think it is.
