They certainly look like rose seedlings! Birds or squirrels could have spread the seeds from hips they ate. You probably don't want them where they are but you might want to dig them up and pot them ans see what they look like when they bloom. Could be fun!

Was there ever a rose there? Could they be our old friend, Dr. Huey? Otherwise, seedlings are always fun.

No there has never ever been a rose planted anywhere near there. There was a big Baccharis shrub 10' wide there. I think it might have been the rat that was eating all the 'Fourth Of July' hips. The shrub gave cover to the rat and he was collecting all the hips and storing/eating them there. Of course I had to get rid of the Baccharis to get rid of the rat.

If they are seedling I should get some flowers soon.

I bet Seil is right! I couldn't figure out for the longest time why passion flower vines kept growing on my fence line (the fence wasn't there when I moved in, so it wasn't the previous owner who planted them). One day I was telling one of my cowokers about my passion flower mystery, and she mentioned the birds eating wild passion flower fruit and then sitting on my fence to poop....lightbulb!!!!

Yep, they're roses, and from what I can see, they appear to be seedlings. It could be from birds, squirrels, rats or perhaps from a hip which fell off a cane when someone dragged rubbish to be tossed. Perhaps they were in soil or mulch which was moved around? Who knows? But, it does show you that if they can germinate right there without your help, raising new seedlings CAN'T be all THAT difficult, can it? (nope!) Kim

Many seedling sprout in my garden each year. Some of them have become wonderful roses. It's a gift!

I got my first two instances of this, this year. One, in an area where I have many roses, so I have no idea what it is - and I've potted it. The other is where I SP'd Medallion, and it's like it (or Dr. Huey) is coming back from the dead!. I'm leaving it in the ground to see what it is. It's doing so well, no need to put it in a pot. Very fun stuff! Who said "there's no such thing as a free rose"?!

OmG...we northerners are struggling to get our roses thru the winters and you have random spontaneous roses sprouting ? Lol. In early march !

Look to be coming from root system. All the seedlings I have seen have different leaves at first but could be wrong. Think there could have been a rose there that the bush ate?

That's what I think, too, Beerhog.

The only way to be sure would be to carefully dig up the little babies. If they have their own root systems then they're likely seedlings. If you find they are attached together somehow or have a long root underground, then they're suckers off of some rose bush that may have been planted many yrs ago. But if you say there's never been a rose there, then they're probably seedlings.

I think I have a seedling baby off my SANKA rose because I discovered last yr that there's another plant in between it and the rose next to it. The blooms are similar to SANKA, but not identical. It's not a sucker because SANKA is a grafted plant, so anything that sprang up from it's roots would be rootstock.

It's interesting what Mother Nature will do for us.
