Are you trying any new ones this year?

I think I have finally found a area they like or they are making them hardier but I have 15 that now have lived 4 years.

I have on order H-Golden Zebra, H-Sweet Tea, H-Solar Eclipse.

My local nursery put last years Hercs on Sale for 50% 0ff I picked up Southern Comfort (have one love it), Melting Fires, Berry Smoothie (had one Squirrel made off with it), Lime Ricky.

I have a area that is the entrance to the property that I plan to use Herc, Spring, and Summer bulbs. I may put some annuals, but my goal is color foliage focus.

The ones I planted at my inlaws did not survive. I think it had too much shade. It was one of those that have very blackish red color.

Paul they are fussy, not too much sun not too little sun not to dry not to wet.

The I area have drains well, morning sun and they seem to love the area.

I am not sure if the sun is much hotter in your zone 7 but they seem to be doing okay in my zone 5 plus weather and we get lots of summer weather in the 80s F. plus I do not know what the names of mine are anymore as I usually grow hosta and shade gardens but these seem to be doing great in the two years I have had in the sun. I needed something on the west side of my house and they look better then my shade ones now. Hi socks. Yes, I do have spaces for all of these in the ground...I just haven't planted them yet. It's been pouring down buckets of rain here for the past week. It's supposed to be sunny tomorrow through Saturday, so I'll get out and put them in the ground then. I have 'Peach Melba' and it's a very pretty one. Strong grower, too... at least for me. If you're looking for variety and can't find them locally, Casita Azul is a great online seller with a huge selection. I've included a link to their website. They are having a year end sale right now where all heuchera/heucherella are 30% off if you enter the code IMPERFECT at checkout. I pot up lots of hosta and grow them that way, mainly due to space. I do notice that the ones in pots don't get chewed by bugs and slugs very often. To overwinter them, I put them into my unheated garage or beneath the overhang of my front porch. "PS the big store in Winchester had about 4 racks of heucheras all around the place. Some had different varieties, so its worth finding and looking at all of them" I find that an annoying feature of the Mahoney's in Winchester. It's a big place and you have to walk all over because you never know where you're going to find something. Sure, they have a perennial patch with things in more-or-less alphabetical order, and separated by sun and shade, but they also feature plants in lots of other areas, like between the greenhouse and the shrub/tree area. And the sizes and prices will be different. It's like buying red bell peppers at Market Basket: the loose ones are one price, the ones on styrofoam trays are another price and in a different aisle, and the bagged ones are yet a different price and in a different aisle! In both places, I imagine the marketers had a hand in the decision, figuring they'll get both the impulse buyer and the planned buyer. But thanks for the tip, Marie, $5 heucheras are well worth a visit.

Any variety that are less fussy, I was thinking of planting them again. Thinking of some of the lemon yellow variety (if I can find them).

You will love Golden Zebra. I have a two year old, and I think it will get some siblings this year if I can find them. My other favorites among my heucheras are Caramel (fast growing, distinctive summer color), Can Can (super frilly edges with a contrasting underside) and Georgia Peach (awesome summer color and better heat tolerance). I have great hopes for my Midnight Bayou. It wasn't tend to very well after I planted it last June, so hopefully it will forgive me this year. Beautiful dark, even, merlot-red with almost black veining.

I'm not overly fond of a few varieties in my collection-- Beaujolais (color is nothing like the photos in catalogues), Midnight Rose (s-l-o-w, yet very thirsty) and Hercules (committed suicide twice). Dale's Strain may also need to find new home.
