Hi i had some questions about pruning and cutting back. I know that they CAN be beneficial and that only select species can be cut back and pruned. By the way, if you can't tell i am a new gardener. I would like to tell you some things i am growing and would like to know if they should be pruned, cut, ded headed, or left alone....and if so...when in the year?

I only know that ornamental grasses such as my maiden grass should be cut back in early spring, so if that tells you what a newb I am. Anyways heres my stuff.

Crepe Myrtle, Appalachain Dogwood, Japanese Maple (bloodgood variety), Hydrangea (both macrophylla and paniculatas [limelight]species), Golden rain tree, rose of sharon (bleeding heart variety, sweetbay magnolia, and barberry.

one more question, i made a once made and started a compost bin, I recently surrounded it with straw, which will probably wind up in there as well once it warms up, do you think that this is a good idea to keep cookin during the winter? (sux cuz right now, my compost is frozen!

It's best if we know where you're located. For example, in warmer climates it's best to prune hydrangea's after flowering in the fall. In colder climates it's best to leave the old flower heads on over the winter and prune in midspring. Also there are different kinds of hydrangea's but I'm assuming you have the more common one, hydrangea Macrophylla. (Big leaf hydrangea)

It's not REALLy necessary to prune the other plants you mention accept to train them. However, the generall rule of thumb is to prune branches that cross or that are touching. Also, branches that grow straight up or down are best pruned off. And suckers (that grow from the base of the tree are best removed.

when we bought our house there were 32 crepe myrtles inthe yard. the previous owner had NEVER trimmed any of them nor any of the other trees other than 1 apple tree. the CMs along the drive are roughly 20 ft apart, yet when we moved inthey were all grown together almost in a hedge! i had to do sever pruning to get them to look like a CM should look, and even now 3 years later some look like crap because they have not filled back in.

mild pruning is best, never take more than about 1/3 the total volume of the tree away at any one cutting. mine suffered because i took about 60% and it took them a couple years to start recovering. you can cut the tops completely out of a CM, leaving just the main trunks, but i prefer to just selectively prune them instead of commiting "Crepe Murder" as the local horts call it.

as far as the compost heap, just keep piling it on, it will start back cooking again.

Sammy, You could just try different pruning techniques on your roses and see what works in your garden. I've visited gardens in California and had friends from California visit my garden. The comment they kept making about my roses is how "huge" they were and they didn't recognize roses in my garden that they grew in their own. I had already "pruned" the roses twice that year by 1/3 that they thought were "huge". From comments here and my own observation, I think roses grow bigger, faster, here and they tolerate pruning very well. My roses are healthy, beautiful bushes and they get pruned, as I said, twice a year. There's no "ideal" or "right" way to prune roses that works for everyone in every climate. It all depends on where you live and how you want your roses and garden to look. I love Gregg beyond all reason and I've seen his garden and it is lovely, but he lives in a totally different climate. I also didn't recognize roses in his garden that I grow in my own :-). Amazing how different the same rose can grow in different area's. You can certainly choose the "no prune" method and see if it works for you. You can also try pruning the roses and see how that works for you. I promise you won't hurt the roses either way. I've done both and I do what works best in my garden. Don't stress yourself over it. No matter how you prune them they will be fine. Carol

I my z5 climate I can only cut back very vigorous growers and bloomers like the viticella and expect to get another flush. Even then I have to keep them watered and fertilized in order to get this, and I don't always have the desire. In z6 you have a bit more leeway. How I'd do it: just as a clematis is finishing up its bloom season, cut it back by 2/3, give it some fertilizer, then keep it well watered. Choose a ones that grow well for you.

Now my husband tells me he knew that area was called North Orange, but doesn't think it was a true city with N.O. in the address. And I thought he'd told me everything!!! We both got a laugh out of the riddle. Thanks. We have one Japanese Yew left in our front yard. It is the kind with the long, wide leaves and was here when we bought the house in May 1967 and the two yews were mature back then. When we added a double carport to our house, they took out the one on the right side of the house front, but I wouldn't let them take out the one on the left because there was no reason to do so. The house was built in the 1950s and the yews were probably the builders' choice of plants at the time because they are all over the subdivision. They just won't give up living and have the spirit of the fig tree, IMO. I'll have to let the yew know how much I value it when I'm outside tomorrow. Looks like my yew is an elder..... ;) noss

Blue spirea is a beautiful shrub if you can keep it alive...good luck. Lavender is best pruned right after it finishes blooming for a second lighter bloom. Otherwise prune in November or late winter/early spring to form a mounding shape. Also prune out any really old stems, dead, or horizontal growing stems along the base. Spring and summer care for Russian sage consists mainly of pruning. When new spring growth emerges, cut the old stems back to just above the lowest set of leaves. If the plant begins to spread open or sprawl in late spring or summer, shear off the top one-third of the stems to encourage upright growth.
