Burning bush falling leaves

I've been noticing that leaves have been falling from underneath by burning bush. Stems still looked fine, but this morning the underpart was bare. Top stems still look fine with plenty of leaves, but it looks odd. What could the problem be. Weather has been really hot/hazy/humid lately and I do water almost every other day.

dig a small hole.. and see if your water is actually getting to the root zone ... if not.. increase water ....

a long slow trickle will allow water to get to the roots .. where it needs it ....

If the leaves in that area, and the ones falling off look faded it would be spider mites. With a heavy infestation, the leaves eventually fall off. Spider mites love hot dry weather. I don't know how old your burning bush is. A young shrub would be more suseptible to too much or too little water. Since you say that the lower leaves are falling off, it could be over-watering (if it's not spider mites.) Typically a plant not getting enough water will show stress - wilting, leaf drop at the top or outer branches of the shrub. If the leaves seem to turn brown or soft before dropping and are dropping from the lower or lower inside part of the shrub, it could be overwatering.

It looks like one of the ascomycete fungi in the Erysiphales order which cause powdery mildew. The plant needs good air circulation in an area where humidity is low and sunshine. Clean up all debris surrounding the pot - especially fallen leaves from the plant. Go easier on the N, if you were trying to push growth. If it makes it, some prophylactic treatments with a systemic fungicide is a good idea. Something with Tebuconazole will work well, primarily as a preventive measure, but it may also work as a fixative, if your plant has enough energy to push a new flush of growth and regain some strength before the leaves fall. You can find Tebuconazole over the counter in Bayer AdvancedÃ¯Â¿Â½ Disease Control for Roses or in their 3-in-1 product for Insect, Disease, and Mite Control. I have read several articles on net about areas that have experienced dry conditions about the same time shrubs and trees should be changing color. It seems that they will shut down early and shed their leaves before they have time to turn. If you have had dry conditions maybe this could be the cause?

Added zone info. Well, I won't be able to find out (quickly) now by digging. Just had a thunderstorm with rain pouring down all night. Guess I'll see if that helps. The whole plant itself isn't bad. Aside from the brown patches, there is no other obvious issue. No leaves/branch die back. The last couple of weeks has been hot and with clear sun. Just hovering over 30C degree and the location gets full sun from morning to probably 3-5pm. However I have some hydrangea (also new) in the vicinity so I have been forced to water them daily with this heat. I did try to avoid the Burning bush somewhat when watering so it isn't soaked every day. The soil in that spot is decently deep, but hasn't been planted with for probably over a decade. I added alot of compose before planting. Lota cedar mulch, more so on the hydrangea, but should be a good 2" around the burning bush too.
