Eric, I'm sure that most of us have tried a body bag rose at some time or the other. Some people say that they have gotten good roses that way. I bought a couple of them years ago and mine were badly virused and no longer live here. I guess there is a possiblity that your rose isn't virused, there's a bigger possiblility that it is. No shame in trying one for yourself. So, did you bring home the Baronne Prevost?

I did buy it, and already have it fully rationalized. If it does end up virused....I'll only be "replacing" it with one from my usual vendors..not just "buying" another one ;)

I've read a lot about people not wanting to waste all this time on a possibly virused rose..I'm going to stick it in the ground, water and spray along with my other roses. If it's virused? no biggie...I'll yank it out and order a big fat one from ARE. I could actually SP a rose and not feel guilty. It wasn't part of the "rose plan" to begin with anyway.

Another caveat.
Don't plant it close to any roses you care about.
The paper last year by Golino et al reported root to root transmission of RMV from RMV infected roses into roses that had no RMV. The transfer happened within six months on some cultivars grown out in CA (which IS heaven for Dr. Huey).

This definitely gives me pause, I certainly don't want to introduce any RMV to my healthy roses. I think I may just put it in a giant pot until I see (or don't see) something.

Second rule is not to buy bagged or boxed!

I agree that "most" body bag roses are not good BUT some are good. The cheap ones you get from the "big box retailers" are the bad ones. They are bad partly because of the rose wholesaler & partly because of the way the retailer handles/displays them. The good ones are from known rose wholesalers (Weeks, J&P), have bigger roots, are packed differently & are found in nursery centers that have proper storage (cool, dark, & humid) facilities for selling dormant nursery stock.

Last week I bought two body bags from Sears - 3.99 each, strictly for pots on the deck until they demonstrate that they "deserve" a spot in the ground.
I know what you mean, cabin fever! Beautifully sunny day here in southern NH, but temps in high 20's and wind gusting over 40 mph....

Wirosarian, I agree, and think a company like J&P is more conscious about the quality of it's rootstock.

Sunny, it needs to be about the 3rd week in April, so all the rose babies start arriving...it will keep me out of trouble and give something to plant/fuss over. I need something to plant! I've already bought 2 grocery store minis (which means I now have 8 plants) growing inside, plus the heirloom tomato seedlings.

Eric, I can commiserate. I also bought 8 body bags; one being the coveted Moonlight Magic. I planted a few BBs about 15 years ago and they are still going strong with no signs of RMV. Ironically, one is Angel Face.

I resisted! I went to HD and they had body bags there but I was strong!

Allright, they didn't have any I really wanted. Then I started to feel bad for the poor orphan roses that were there drying in the sun. But I bought other plants instead. And Rose Tone for my existing roses.

I hope you will soon have some blooms------I picked up a MacCartney Rose a few years ago and it is still going strong.
However that was just pure dumb luck because they usually don't make it---
But I do know the feeling when you see a rose you have wanted for a long time and there it is.

I keep dreaming, HOPING one of my 'short list' roses will magically appear in some obscure place and in need of adoption. Hey I was adopted and look how I turned out! (okay bad arguement.)

Thought I'd post yet another follow up now that its bloomed. Introducing "My NOT Baronne Prevost" rose, but some unknown HT..pretty enough though, a slight scent...I'll find somewhere in the garden for her. No signs of RMV to date. This bloom is already a couple of days old and is pretty much unchanged.

My body bag this year was PJPII, which was own root. It's hard to resist, isn't it?

I have had VERY good luck with bodybags this year. Only one was mislabelled (with only one more to bloom and prove itself) and out of nine only two croaked. A couple are iffy with PM, but at least three look fantastic. Yankee Doodle, New day, and Coral Dawn are near-perfect still, although I know RMV can still show up at any time. Oh well. I am enjoying them while I got 'em! I paid $24 for nine roses. Not too shabby.

A few years ago I was at EP and Dan Russo pointed out an infected rose-said it would have to be removed-but imagine
what a root-to-root transmission of RMV could do to a place
like EP, the roses are planted fairly closely, scary....

As for the RMV, that's why I'm keeping it a pot until now. If I do end up planting it in the yard, I'll plant it away from other roses. Hoov, I did some searching on HMF and it looks a lot like Perfume Delight. I'm getting a stronger scent on it today.
