Fire ants will kill roses

if you are not careful. This rose has been in the pot it was planted in for almost 9 months. the other 3 that were planted the same day in the same medium and the same size planter had huge root balls and they were ALL, including this one, 3 foot tall and covered in buds and leaves.SO you can see what kind of damage Fireants can do to a plants roots.

I washed the roots off and treated it like a bare root (without the pruning) and watered it in really well....It should be ok, but only time will tell. I could not touch it for an hour after dumping it out of the pot.....

I have lost many plants to fire ants. Usually by the time I notice they are in decline, it's too late to save them. Years ago, I had a collection of striped double impatience on my back deck. I lost every single one of them to fire ants. I have been looking over the years and still have not been able to replace some of those unusual colors. I'm fighting them right now in my gallon pots of roses that I haven't planted yet.

Oh, man -- we're fairly new to Florida and I never realized fire ants would damage roses. I'd better stock up on Amdro.

Just wanted to add some more thoughts on D.E. as to why it is so useful for the above purpose as well as many others. Insects don't have the ability to clot (unlike humans)their internal fluid (blood) there for if they get pricked they will literally bleed to death no matter how small the cuts are. D.E. can even be applied in a sprayer (with a small squirt of dishsoap to help stick it to plants or other surfaces) if kept agitated so as not to clog the nozzle. Then when it dries it will be reactivated. It will wash off so will need to be reapplied if rain or over head watering is used. The one thing I always remind folks about DE is that it is a dust and needs to be handled carefully so as not to breathe it into your lungs. (not a good thing). Use a standard dust mask if air borne dust is a possibility. Not trying to horn in Al, just offer more info on the subject.:) Happy Growing David

One homemade remedy you might try: mix icing sugar half and half with baking soda. The sugar attracts the ants, the baking soda kills them. Apparently they cannot expel the gas it creates... Place the mixture in a narrow-ncked bottle (like a ketchup bottle or milk jug) on its side in the yard. Chickens should not be able to get the bait and I doubt it would harm them it they did. The ants will carry the bait back to the nest and it should wipe out the whole colony. If you do try this, please let me know how it works. It was some kid's science fair project and I have had good results using it... but would like to hear how it works for others.

I remember the fire ant marching North :( I was hoping that our weather would be too cold for them. Over the years that marched up this way, we where in a heat wave w/ a droughts in the summer, now I wonder how cold is too cold for the fire ants, how much more will they go north. I know the site said they are not sure how they got in Huston or where they came from... But one has to wonder, if someone didnt "plant" the little guys on our soil, hoping to kill the fire ants, but not knowing full of what the crazy ants would do. and how does a African queens escape from an South American lab (AKA; Killer bees) furthermore, why does it always seem that when I Insect gets loose, it has to be a nasty one. what happened to all the good Insects. the site, it also said that they kill out electrical meaning they also invade inside your home, and wipe out our ladybugs. But what I don't understand is that it looks like they could have been control, and still could, if the EPA would allow a stronger ant killer to be available to the Exterminators. for me it leaves too many questions and not enough answers. Like if they knew about the ants since 2002, why have they not done something about it.. If an exterminator is charging someone $1200 to kill out the ants at her parents home ( if that is true, and it really does kill the ants) then there you go..

I hear that there is some product out there were you can put a ring around a plant and the ants wont cross it so if you submerge the pots again to get rid of the ants and then use that product as a barrier, the ants will not find their way back into the pots and you should be rid of them! Fire ants seem terrible. So far I havent seen any here, but there are tons of other plants that make problems and they are also pretty difficult to get rid of! Good luck! -Alex

The scariest part is that pit had been treated at the first sign of them and I never could get rid of them. I gave up. Here is another view of the area under the pot after the rose was removed...

You can see how they had dug out the soil around the pot and it sunk into the ground...and you can see how many ants are still there after an hour.....scary really. Keep ammonia around too cause it kkills them on your skin and pulls out the burn and sting.

Thanks for the ammonia tip. Coming from NJ, we've never had to deal with them.

What works best for me is one of the insecticides that you broadcast in a fertilizer spreader. Do the entire yard at the same time, or they just pack up their children and move. It lasts for several months. I, too, have noticed that when you put the insecticide on the bed (it's not always a mound; sometimes they are underground), they seem to ignore it. When I have a particularly persistent bed, I dig it up with a shovel, and spray them with an ant killer. Be very careful if you do this. If you're not paying attention, they will be up your pants leg before you know it. I try to get the queen when I do this (she's the one with wings).

Amdro is the best we have found and we use the bait so that they carry it into the mound. The hole above was 6 inches deep (or so) and yesterday, it was flat with the ground. They had dug it back up even with the yard and my hubby was asking me why I filled it in since it would be easier to kill them if it was open with the tunnels exposed.....I just shook my head cause I had been at work all day .....
